Thank you all so much for 1000 subscribers! When I started this channel just 5 months ago, I didn’t have the faintest idea or expectation I’d ever reach this incredible milestone. Every single one of you mean the world to me, and I thank you so deeply for subscribing and watching my videos. In celebration of this milestone, I’ve decided to release this; the first ever full recording of the Coronation March of Emperor Bokassa on the internet. I’ve been sitting on this for a few months, after I received a vinyl record of it for my birthday at the beginning of the year, enjoy!
Hahahahaha indeed, Bokassa was an incredibly huge fan of Napoleon. Basically his entire coronation, coronation dress and everything was based on Napoleon’s coronation. He initially also invited the pope to attend the coronation, like Napoleon had, but due to Pope Paul VI’s age and ill health he declined, but did send his formal blessing to the emperor
@@doncseczakosantal7920emperor shōwa refusing to accept an invitation is understandable since it would be the same as showing an active support to a tyrant
@@masterspark9880 It was financed by the French government actually. Everyone claims a different fake number for how much of the GDP was wasted on this - just yesterday I read the Guardian claim it was the entire GDP. Rubbish.
Yeah Bokassa didn’t live a very easy life, which probably contributed to his declining mental state during his rule. His father was murdered when he was young, and he then went on to see practically continual combat service in the French army, fighting for Free France in the African campaigns, the invasion of France in 1944, and then even being part of the French forces to invade Germany in 1945. And after the war he was sent to Vietnam.
Exactly you could even say this coronation is from sadness and colonialism seeing his father die brutally by French fighting for for the French obsessing over the culture etc
Fun Fact: Emperor Hiro Hito And The Last Shah Of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi Were Both Invitied To Bokkasa`s Coronation But They Both Refused To Attend The Coronation
Lovely, too bad he was a bit too insane since his reign was otherwise pretty stable. Ironically enough he counts as one of the better leaders of Central Africa from what I have heard (despite all his faults). If he had been a bit more sane and not harshly repress protesters Central Africa might have survived as an empire since it was very much stable when he was in power.
Central Africa Republic, Haiti and France = countries where republican leaders have declared themselfs emperors. I guess you could throw in China with Yuan Shikai though there they hade emperors before the republican leader took power and they had different rules with the Mandate of Heaven
Indeed, his rule is generally remembered fondly and with nostalgia in Central Africa. His growing insanity was what doomed him ultimately. From what I’ve read, the empire seems to have had some actual genuine public support upon its proclamation in 1976, so if he hadn’t just grown more and more mad and had his troops so harshly put down protesting students (protesting a rather stupid law he shouldn’t and didn’t need to make), the empire may still be around today, and would probably be a much better place than today’s war torn republic
I agree. If the empire survived, Jean-Bedel Bokassa would have been able to unify all of central Africa, and not only that, he would have been able to successfully probably have made his country successful.
