  • Rudolphina Menzel (née Waltuch, 1891-1973), was a Viennese-born, Jewish scientist whose pioneering research on canine psychology, development, and behavior fundamentally shaped the ways dogs came to be trained, cared for, and understood. Between the two world wars, Menzel was known throughout Europe as one of the foremost breeders and trainers of police dogs and served as a sought-after consultant at Kummersdorf, the German military dog training institute in Berlin. She was also a fervent Zionist who was responsible for inventing the canine infrastructure in what came to be the State of Israel and for training hundreds of dogs to protect Jewish lives and property in pre-state Palestine. Teaching Jews to like dogs and training dogs to serve Jews became Menzel’s unique kind of Zionist mission. Detailed and insightful, "Canine Pioneer: The Extraordinary Life of Rudolphina Menzel", edited by Susan Martha Kahn, brings to light an important piece of history.

I love my Canaan Dog. She is so smart and loyal. I truly hope the breed survives. I am not happy with how the state of Israel has treated this breed and breeders. Total disgrace. Thank you for your work in keeping this important breed alive! Godspeed!

Are they suitable for the role of protection dogs? I understand that they were superseded by the belgian malinois in the IDF

It depends i have one. They are very alert and protective and dont miss a thing thats going on even with a guest you are uncomfortable with they will notice that. And they won't hesitate to defend you and your property. But they tend to bark alot and are not very big... My female dog is 60+ cm and wight 68 pounds witch is 31 kilos. But usually they are smaller she is an exception just like most man are 175 cm tall but you can still find 200 cm man.
So for protection they best we you have more then one or get a big dog with them because they will be the one alerting the other big dog that its time to protect.
The cons are they are very teritorial need alot of exresize a bit jelus at times and need a good amount of socialization

They aren't that small lol. They are small to medium sized. And while not exactly that big or muscular, yes not very stocky and quite lean but well built, in fact, like the Australian dingoes. Canaan dogs are still very good watchdogs and guardian dogs. I would say pair one up with a belgian malinois. They will make a great security duo or team in your house. I have got one canaan dog "Rex" and a mixed breed "Winnie" we affectionately term as "Singapore special" where I am from, both are alert and very efficient guardian dogs. They protect my family and me well. Though I can take care of myself. But I can trust my kids around them. They are protective of my family and myself and unless the threat is imminent and or escalates even, they will not act aggressively but will bark and growl to indicate to whoever or whatever it is that is causing us or rather my kids discomfort to back off. Many dogs can be trained for a wide variety of purposes but I understand some breeds are better for certain purposes. But the canaan dog serve its purpose well as guardian dogs and have been trained and trusted by ancient israelites and the beluoin tribes today to guard their livestock. Usually guardian dogs, those that are made to watch over and protect livestock particularly are also trained to detect and even fight off predators, like wolves and mountain lions, to even bears and tigers or lions, crocodiles and pythons. Humans working with dogs as a team can achieve wonders. I think God created things this way knowing how well or not it will go and praise be to Him. Haha.
PS. There's an ancient spitz breed that are trained to guard livestock and fight off wolves. Its very well known and its a very large dog breed and very powerful too. That dog along with another dog breed the dogo argentino can probably take on mountain lions too despite what those stupid and whiny big cat fanboys like to say lol.
