I have recently adopted a Canaan dog from Cairo, Egypt where they are considered trash dogs. Never taught by her mother what to do. Never fed properly. Had a litter immediately when she was able. There is a wonderful group made up of people around the world trying to get them out. Mine is believed to be about 4 years old and has no idea how to just be a dog. Now I understand a bit more why she doesn't understand the concept of play or even able to trust. For the past 5 months she has just gotten over some of the trauma she's gone through. This week was the first time I was able to put a collar on her and just walk without her fighting it. Thank you for this video as I try and find anything about them that is helpful in understanding her behaviors. 9:56 3.23.24
I hear you... My pooch is from the west border, got him at about 7 mo. It took about 6 months for him to come near me of his own accord... and a year to show affection. He's almost 3 now, and still prefers not to be touched by almost anyone.
I had a Carolina dog who was rescued from Hurricane Katrina. He was another ancient type of breed. Definitely a different dog to raise up very unique behaviors ,super smart very healthy and hardy
This was a great video. I have always been enamored by this ancient breed and I am fascinated by it’s independent streak and resilience. More so than most dogs it seems, and which is saying a whole lot as dogs can be extremely so. One only need to go to the third world to see how they survive in places where even people struggle to secure food and they somehow do and even thrive in some cases in the midst of such abject poverty.
Looking for a dog and have had border collies before - like working dogs but borders are always a bit nutty. This looks like a good possible alternative for a puppy. Great information on the breed history and nature.
It's a good choice if you're okay with a super independent dog. This means he also doesn't look to please you or for your approval of anything... I have a Canaan from the wild (got him as a pup) and had an Aussie before that. They're so different in nature it's like two different species.
@@hadaskravitz2639 Yup, I did the same thing. Rescued my Canaan in the desert, he's a year now and I've brought him back home. I lucked out and got a wonderful temperament so my boy does like praise, but treats are hit/miss and he's stubborn and independent as hell. They're like huskies in that they choose when to listen lol
i have been a grateful companion to now my third Canaan beginning in 2001 with a 2nd generation protective and handsome black & tan & white boy, then a first gen red girl imported from Israel and who is my best friend & PhD. smart (& saved me from stranger attack). now with #3 he's about 4th gen and the sweetest boy ever with menacing presence and formidable bark. as a gorgeous grey - white - black blend, he is beautiful and has a lovely temperament. he hails from Champion blood lines but is not breed standard coloring, which helped him be exported to my home in VA from England. there is no other breed like the Canaan Dog. silly and playful with those they trust, but with a mind of their own and self sufficiency about them, the breed is challenging vigilant, and wicked smart, but also loyal, protective, and fierce guardians of their loved ones. thanks to a Discovery Channel/Animal Planet breed selector survey i completed in 2001, i have been an oh so very fortunate companion admirer and advocate of this breed.
I have a cane and dog and this is my second dog. They are just wonderful, but just let them be as they are. They have to be socialized from the beginning and then you will have a wonderful dog which nobody else has.
This documentary is a very sad one and what this woman is doing with a canaandog from Israel Treating the dog like any other dog this documentary does not even show how smart and gorgeous these dogs are just when they are dogs and not going to a show where everyone is examine them touching them The nature of this dog is suspicion. They have survived over 3000 years and then comes someone like that woman and make a show dog from this beautiful creatures.
The canaan dog lives all over the middle east, this breed makes more than 50% of the street dogs in Egypt , each pack of street dogs got an alpha male which is very strong , the dogs in that video cant be compared with those dogs , those , canaan dog must live in wild
Well, most of the street dogs around the world aren’t purebred. Think of all the mixing they all do. And you know none of them are spayed or neutered.. I wonder what the percentage is of street dogs that are actually fixed? Probably very low! But anyway. This dog in the video is a specific breed that has been developed called a "Canaan Dog", which came originally from dogs imported to North America and Europe from Israel. These dogs have a more organized bloodline, with the breeders. Street dogs, like pariah or the descendants of Canaan dogs, can’t possibly be pure representations of a breed, because there are so many color variations, sizes, and forms. They hybridize like mad… but the variations in color and size are cool. Which is great! 👍🏽
She even says, around the 06:00 minute mark, that most of the dogs we see in the west are fourth, fifth, or sixth generation dogs and puppies. Meaning that’s how far removed they are from the Middle East or the Levant or North Africa. So the bloodline is essentially completely different from street dogs that live wild, and mate and mix like rabbits, uncontrolled… just creating more mouths to feed, more poop to clean up, and more carriers of pests and diseases. Just saying, again! 😂
No, from the beginning they were found in, what was then PALESTINE! So no they are not originally from Israel‼️ Greetings from a Kanaan owner in Sweden ❣️🐕
Many Kanaan dogs are in shelters because owners do not know how to handle them. This is extremely disturbing. Everyone who consider to take a dog like that should think that they take this dog in a forever home and never give them up because they cannot handle this fact they are bonded to their own for life You cannot blackmail this dog with anything if he does not trust you he does not do anything you want from him, but if he does, he is your best and best friend not like any other dog in the world. Those dogs are very different. They are dogs like a dog has been 3000 years ago, never changed by human intervention
Temperament varies, but generally they're wary/suspicious unless found very young in the wild. Energy level, at least from what I can tell, is about equivalent to a lab. They're content to sleep a lot, but they could easily run miles a day too.
You can't preserve a type of dog unless it continues to live the same lifestyle that shaped it in the first place. I wonder when people will finally learn this?
@@nikkihorn3852 Seems like a case of Dire Wolves not actually being that closely related to gray wolves. Their closest common ancestor was 5.7 million years ago. But because of a similar life styles, their bodies evolved similarly, despite not being related closely at all.
I do not find it right to bring a dog like that to a show. This is extremely against their character. They are extremely suspicious and extremely smart They should be just like they are. This is not a dog for beginners. This is a dog to be a partner only To take them to dog shows is extremely stressing for those dogs They live in the desert of Israel, where is quiet It is a pity to see that on TH-cam Just quit the dog shows and let them be working dogs as you said before Because when they got bored, they can be very distractive They are too smart to do the same every day

Very cool to hear that they’re still pulling in dogs from the original source. I feel like that’s got to do a lot of good for the breed!
Beautiful. That is the most accurate description of the breed I've heard so far.
I love this channel I have been watching for about 3 years man it introduces so many interesting breeds I would have not known about

Clearly from Palestine, Canaan was arab.
