I was so confused when you said "cold presses paper" und "hot pressed paper" because in germany we call the hot pressed paper just 'paper'(Papier) and the cold pressed paper call we 'watercolour paper' (Aquarellpapier) and as you can see we don't even call watercolours watercolour because that means a different type of colouring.

Not really. Maybe for student quality, but professional/artists quality paper does most definitely have these labels. Hahnemühle is a german brand and does have it.
Hot pressed paper is more expensive and specialised which is why student quality paper usually just cold pressed or unlabelled mush.

Oh! I just bought a hot and cold press watercolor paper sketchbook earlier, with hot on the right, and cold on the left side.
This made it sooo much easier to understand in what style I want to paint, as a side by side comparison.
On the right side, I found it extremely better to color with alcohol markers, for example, since they don’t soak into the paper.
I’m picking up on art again after a looong 2 year artblock, and I honestly can’t believe how much I missed out, how much I could’ve improved. But hey, who says that there’s still no time for improvement? That’s the only reason I haven’t given up on art completely, and your videos encourage me to try something new every day. 😊

So based on how my teacher taught without actually saying it; hot press, the smooth stuff, is better if your trying to have insane value like take a still life or portrait from direct observation. It allows for very precise accuracy. You can spread it evenly without having to worry about nooks and crannies where it could pool as you layer it.
We never really used cold pressed because it was highschool and we where working from photos or direct observation. I could definitely see cold press having many fun uses. But if your going for realism or close you probably want hot press so you can practice making it look real yourself.
