Excellent demonstration. Such a good way to ensure all three pieces are painted exactly the same so they truly display the differences in the three papers. This is exactly how a demo like this should be done. Thanks again for your hard work and excellent thinking skills! This was very helpful.
This is the absolute best art tutorial I've ever watched on TH-cam. It was clear, concise, and covered a multitude of watercolor techniques. No distracting music in the background. 😊 Thank you so much ❤
Interesting how much more vivid the colours are on the rough pressed paper. And the textures look really good too. I normally like smooth paper, but will have to try rough again. Thank you
I love hot press paper, and your brilliant tutorial shows why! What a wonderful demonstration of the unique strengths and beauties of each type of paper and explanation of when we might want to use which. Thank you as always, Karen!
Thank you so much Karen, this demonstration was extremely interesting , and very helpful in understanding the different watercolour papers ,and how they work , especially as a beginner.
Really enjoyed Karen your tutorial on hot cold and rough paper, I must say Karen I've wondered how it preform but couldn't ask. Thanks greatly appreciated stay safe and healthy
I recently purchased some Arches Hot press, and now with this demonstration I can see that I should enjoy using it mostly in my landscapes. The hot press has the look I'm going for. Thank you.
That’s a fantastic testing & explanation of the three different types of watercolor papers. You’re one of the the only artists that has done this kind of comparison with the various techniques for each paper. After watching your video & results, I now know why I love the cold press paper the best. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I love your videos, Karen. This was a great demonstration of the different papers. I’ve noticed using bokeh technique in watercolor is trending, but I’m not a fan. I think bokeh is best in photography. Is there anyone else who agrees with me? I love your tutorials using Brusho. Just started experimenting with it. Fun!
Thanks so much Jane, really pleased you liked the demo... I love using Brusho, glad you are experimenting with it... it is so much fun. Bokeh seems very popular at the moment and I have seen some amazing paintings using the technique 😊
I ordered Arches HP and rough to try out. I already use Arches CP 140 lb. This video answered all my questions....and just in time...my paper arrived yesterday!
Brilliant demo! I use HP for detailed paintings and working in coloured pencil as you can blend it smoothly. I love CP in the main, but do enjoy Rough for the wilder stuff! 👏😁
Fabulous demonstration Karen, thank you. I've just started trying landscapes on Saunders Waterford rough and I've found this demo quite enlightening, thank you again😊
Excellent info. I’ll share this in some beginner groups on Facebook. My new favorite paper is Fabriano Artistico Soft press. It’s in between hot and cold pressed.
Thanks you so much for this video, you make watercolouring look easier and less fearful. I do not have Brusho products, but decided to try my Lindy’s Magicals , they worked awesome, but do have shine to them. I also used Ranger Distress Resist Spray as I did not have masking fluid and it worked well, I applied it by brush and not spray. I learned a great deal from you today.
Thank you for this side by side at the same time demo! I've never done that with my Arches paper. Although I've got to say that the findings appear to be the same. For me, it comes down to using CP the vast majority of the time, Rough next and Hot hardly ever. I have never found my way to playing nice with Hot. Hot tends to be extra thirsty and brush marks of laying down the paint can be difficult to move and blend.
You are so welcome and thank you for sharing that Arches would be similar. I agree about the HP being difficult at times to blend and move paint, especially when you are working wet on dry 😊
thanks. I only buy cp so far and i will now consider the others. How about the paper that is not 100 percent cotton. Is that something you use. I bought some and it works decent since i am pretty new. I do some practice on them and also final items.
Hi great video, thanks for the demonstration. I wonder what is the best type of paper for water color gradienting. I love the charm of rough texture but has heard many said the smoothness of HP helps the colors blend better. What's your opinion on this? Thanks!
I needed this demo today as Im trying to under how to use watercolor on hot press paper..my attempt resulted in the paint just sliding around on the paper, no control.

I do prefer skies painted on smoother paper and Arches even in cold pressed seems too rough for skies. I switched to Cold pressed Fabriano and I definitely like it better than Arches. I have never tried hot pressed per se but Fabriano NOT seems to do the trick. Waterford is available in the US as well so I’m hoping to get some soon. Great tutorial!
GREAT VIDIO!! While you were painting, I told myself Cold Press is best! When you finished, I decided-Your painting on the rough paper was my favorite!!! Lots of good tips! Plan to watch again. Thank you!!!...Just wondering--can these papers be ironed to remove the buckles?
Thank you Shirley, so pleased you found this helpful... In answer to your question, yes they can be ironed, just be careful not to iron painting side up and use another scrap of paper as a barrier as well. Let me know how you get on 😀
Nice demo Karen. Interesting to see the differences in paper. Do you 'size' your watercolour paper prior to use? If so, what is your approach? I really like that circle stencil-gotta get one of those!
Thank you Steve... I do very little to the paper, except tape some washi tape around the edge. I no longer stretch my paper and often use watercolour blocks which help with warping :)
Thank you for this demonstration! It ws great. ☺️ Do you think the hot pressed paper might have warped less because it was the only one out of the three still in a whole sheet? 🙂
Hi Hannah, I am not sure Hannah, the smaller the paper the less warping I was told? I will have to do experimenting on whole sheets next time. Thank you for sharing 😊
@@KarenRiceArt I was thinking that since you only painted on a small part of the paper perhaps the dry part kept it stabilised. But this is speculation ☺️
This is a good comparison. I use hot press because I do ink pen with water color which needs the smooth surface. The choice of hot press or cold press depends on what you do with it.
Excellent demonstration. Such a good way to ensure all three pieces are painted exactly the same so they truly display the differences in the three papers. This is exactly how a demo like this should be done. Thanks again for your hard work and excellent thinking skills! This was very helpful.

The best paper surface comparison I've seen. Thank you!
Wow, thank you!

Thanks Allison... you are right about the vivid colours on the rough paper. Have fun trying the rough paper... let me know how you get on :)
Awesome comparison and amazing to see how great a simple "testpicture" can look if you just know what you are doing. Thank you.

@@KarenRiceArt Yes, wet on dry is problematic; yet I find it so with wet on soaked wet also 🙄
Hi Karen, very interesting Thank you
You are so welcome Maria! Thank you!
Nice demo! I hope next time you make a side by side comparison of 100% cellulose vs 100% cotton paper. Thank you!
Thank you! Great idea!!
Great idea! Might also be good to show granulating paint with paper tilting around. Thanks
Great suggestions... thanks Elizabeth... watch this space
thanks for showing this :) really interesting theme

Great question! I think the best all-round paper is cold pressed for blending control.
So useful. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Karen, thank you. I’ve tried Washi tape before and it didn’t stick to the paper. Is there a specific brand tha works best.
I buy it from different suppliers, and go for the tape with the best customer reviews 😊
I needed this demo today as Im trying to under how to use watercolor on hot press paper..my attempt resulted in the paint just sliding around on the paper, no control.
So glad this tutorial helped 😊
Brilliant!! I’m having a hard time deciding but I’m going with the hot pressed. The warping was the tie breaker 😃
Thanks so much!
Hope you enjoy painting this one 😊

If i wanna make master copies which paper is the best ?
I would recommend cold pressed 300gsm 100% cotton.

i love the texture you can get using rough paper but prefer working on hot pressed since i can get detail easier if needed
Thank you and yes HP much better for details
useful content, thank you, personally I found it too fast.
Glad it was helpful but sorry that it was too fast.
Hoping you find a way of slowing it down?
Do you know which paper creates most granulation? I am addicted to granulation!
Hi Pierre, thank you for your question. Rough paper is great for granulation. Hope this was helpful 😊
@@KarenRiceArt Thanks! I normally stick with NOT because it is easier to buy - tempted to try some hot and rough to try!
What about using some "Birmingham green (red shade)". Or even some "Llangollen phtalo burnt orange (light)" ?
