One peculiar question to ask is "why is Undertale in black and white?". What's that? It isn't, you say? I mean the battles! Almost every single encounter features an entirely white monster upon a black background. What does it mean? Was it a stylistic choice? Was Toby really too lazy to colour them? Or is there a completely different reason that's integral to the lore of the game? You can probably see where I'm going with this... yeah, it's that last one.

Actually, I think I know the reason: If I remember correctly, in the Undertale Art Book we can see some old backgrounds (made by Temmie) for the story sequence in the beginning of the game, which actually looked very nice!! However, Toby didn't like them, because he said he wanted the game to seem "ugly". That way, people would start Undertale with very low expectations, so that when the good moments came, people would be blown away and love this game. I assume the same applies to the battle sprites...
Indeed, In the end, i think it's just a design choice to grab peoples attention, not much more.
Naah... Given how simple it is to actually colour the sprites, I highly doubt it he was just lazy...
Besides, that's why he had artists in his team. I'm sure Temmie could have coloured the sprites herself...

Ladaevion? Haggans well I play on a PS4 but I’ve played Undertale on a total of 3 different consoles:
Nintendo Switch (at my friend’s birthday party and she just handed me the Switch)
PSV(ita) (my friend Ashlee found out I liked the game and let me play on her Vita)
PS4 (this console belongs to me. I got the game for Christmas)
Toriel does darken the room before you fight her.
I always thought rather than being covered in a sheen of magic and sucking color from the background, that we weren't actually seeing any of the physical world, just the spiritual plane. I agree with the reasoning behind Monster Souls being white, but the game also states that monster's bodies and souls are fused into one thing, which is why destroying one destroys the other. The Human souls are smaller than the human's bodies, making the small heart shape, whereas the monster souls are the exact same shape and size of their actual bodies, which is why we see them in full black and white, we're looking straight at their souls. The black background comes from the fact that we're only seeing souls, and things that would be in the room with you such as walls, ground, and furniture have no souls, remaining invisible.
I always just thought it wasn't the room darkening, when you fight somebody everything instantly becomes dark. Imo the reason everything darkened slowly because Toriel didn't want to fight you

here's why i think it is: frisk's attacks directly hits most monsters, but the monsters' attacks requires frisk to see what's coming. thus, it is impossible to think that physical and magical attacks are the same, and many aus got this wrong.
other than that, the soul didn't seem to change the direction it's facing even though attacks come from different sides.

IDK there, Flowey's a bit weird. He technically doesn't have a soul but was injected with "determination" from Asriel, so I guess It's like in glitchtale where the soul can be emptied by the DT extractor. Flowey has the white magic stuff from the inside of a monster soul, but not the soul itself.

Extra theory: the reason they have a black and white sprite and words when they talk is because it’s a magic translated! If you listened to what they were saying in-game without reading the words, you wouldn’t understand what they were saying, right? So what if they are using their magic, which is why the sprite is white, to translate it into your language?

I'm not exciting, but not all of them would speak English, right? I mean, in the underground there is 4 different areas, not including the ruins. And they are a winter kinda biome, a humid water biome, a very hot one, and a city. All of these things wouldn’t be in one place, right? So the monsters probably came from a many places, and thus would speak more then 1 language. Or maybe the monsters had been separate from humans so long that they developed their own language? I don’t know, just kinda came up with it *watching the video lol

It's a reference to Mother. In that game, it was almost the exact same thing. Sure that was color for the enemies during the battles, but the HUD was entirely monochrome and the background was completely black, and those two things are basically 90% of the screen. Toby just wanted to replicate the monochrome style of the battles.

which was a good choice because
a. it sets lower expectations so you're more impressed when it's good
b. it shows that its not about the surface; you don't need amazing graphics or mind blowing artwork to have an amazing game with fun and well-designed gameplay and an extremely well-written plot (that breaks the forth wall and teaches thought-provoking lessons)
also idk why people say it has bad graphics because for the style it was done really well

Dude they probs made it black and white just for colour contrast and so your soul in game would stand out more in battle, so that you weren't bombarded with colours in a battle. Undertale is styled as a retro game, so Toby probs just used it as a design choice to make it seem more retro. Look, do what ever you want on your channel, but I'm just saying that this time, the theory was a bit...;;

Atomic Player I actually had a lot of trouble fighting Undyne because I'm colorblind and can't distinguish between the red and gold arrows. I e-mailed Toby about it and he replied with something like 'lol you're right, my bad.'

Eh, just to shine a light there: it's not about how colorblind people see.
It's about having no "color" at all.
So the experience is (almost) visually the same, since B&W and grayscale are seem just fine.
But yeah, a few of the attacks and heals must take some learning.
But they can see the same in the game as everyone else does
Actually since colourblind people by definitions don't see certain colours all of them see white different from normal people.
Simple: frisk is colorblind until asriel makes them not colorblind so they get the living crap scared out of them. Notice that battles are in first person while everything in color (besides asriel and omega flowey) are in third person

It takes at most 20 seconds with the paint bucket tool in microsoft paint to color the entire cast of Undertale's battle sprites, I doubt it was laziness but it still sounds funny. More realistically it was probably so the game would look different from other games and be instantly recognizable.

I think you over-reacted with this whole theory... As Undertale is an 8-Bit game,Toby probably coloured the sprites black,so the players gain a sense of nostalgia from the old retro games.

Good theory! But, if I may, I've found another reason why Undertale's battles are mostly black and white.
I've found that most of the character development happens in battles. By making the battles a simple pallet of black and white, we can focus on the battle and, further more, the story.
I'm not sure if anyone has noticed, but vibrant colors in 8-bitish games may distract the eye. Imagine how hard all the battles would be if EVERYTHING was in color.
The only things in color while in the battles are the obtions, the background, (its more of a colored grid, but you know what I mean.) and our Soul. We can focus on what is happening because our minds see white as a focused color. It's not as distracting as, lets say, the giant monstrosity that is Photoshop Flowey, but it's enough to keep us focused.
Black and white, so we can focus on the things in that MATTER in the battle!

When you fight a monster you enter "The Fight Zone" which is in black and white, and in an area where nothing is damaged but the things "fighting" are.
Arcade Attack Pokemon Black's first battle did affect the outer-surroundings, since your bedroom gets destroyed after the battle :|

*Toriel is the 2nd battle Sprite with colour, if you look closely at her eyes, her eyes are tinted red. And Sans’ glowing eye in the Genocide Route is light blue, and after he gets hit in the end of the battle, he bleeds and his blood is red.*
In OFF when you fight a burnt or spectre it's not coloured but OFF was made back in 2008

I always thought it was symbolic of the nature of fighting itself.
When merely speaking with a person and getting to know them you come to see how complex and varied the individual really is. They are an amalgamation of a lifetime of relationships, learning, and experiences that shape their personalities and views of the world.
When you find yourself in a fight, though, the world becomes very black and white, with the other person being nothing more than either a friend or foe and your options being to do harm to them or attempt to escape. All subtlety is lost, and everything that lead both participants to that encounter no longer matters.
Until the fighting is over with, no understanding can be reached.

Speaking of battles and such, I think I have an interesting theory/question/thing; what are animal's souls like in undertale? Do they even have souls? (Well, looking at Flowey, they probably do.) what are they like? Are they right side up or upside down? Do they come in different colors? Can they enter battles? Whaaaaaa???
what if there weren't any animals, and monsters are the only non human creatures in the undertale world?

I know I'm not a Patreon, so I probably won't get noticed with this idea, but could you make a discussion/theory video about the possible integration of other video game elements into the game's lore?
We all know that saving and resetting are normally just game mechanics, but in Undertale, they're very much a part of the game's lore. The player/Frisk is actually resetting time in the game's world.
So what about other video game elements like the battle system or the text boxes the characters speak in?
For example, how is Asgore able to smash the MERCY option (or Omega Flowey just destroying the battle screen completely), or how are Mettaton's words able to be bombs if they are simply game features? (Of course, these examples could just be 4th wall breaks, but what if they're not?)
Making this more relevant to the video, maybe the monsters are black and white as a result of the battle system integration. After all, your SOUL and the battle menu are coloured for the most part.
I don't recall any specific information in the game saying that any of the other elements are in the lore like SAVING is, but maybe there are.
Considering the fandom, there probably is already a headcanon/AU that does something with this, but I'm just not bothered to look it up right now.
Edit: I looked it up and turns out I was right, there is an AU that does something with this. I would say what, but it's all random with no in-game evidence that would make it worth mentioning in a theory video.

What about Temmies
The dark background could also have a similar meaning as the yang in yin-yang, a belief that opposite sides balance each other out. We've seen historical beliefs represented in Undertale before, most notably karma. Also, almost every powerful monster balances raw strength with magic, making black the perfect representative for raw strength, the implied counterpart to magic.
Examples:
Undyne The Undying: Uses a ton of physical attacks (spears), rarely relying on magic. Has significantly more black than white on her sprite. Yes, I know they're energy spears, but she uses them a lot like an infinite source of normal spears, so I'll count that as physical. Also, she suplexes boulders for fun.
Undyne The Regular: Uses slightly more magic to trip you up, but still relies mainly on her spears. Has more white than The Undying, but still overall has a ton of black.
Sans: Bone attacks could be debated as either physical or magical, but due to Sans' lack of physical strength matching up with the weak damage from his bones, I think it's safe to say they're physical. Gaster Blasters are definitely magic though. Almost equal amounts of both colors.
Asgore: Mostly uses *_FiRe,_* but wait a second! His cloak may be black, but his pauldrons and armor are definitely white!
Whimsun: Weak and reluctant to attack you. Mostly white.
Moldsmal: Attacks may seem magic-based, but Moldsmal is basically Jell-O, you could replicate those to an extent in real life without being made of Jell-O yourself. Mostly black.

the monsters are made of magic and leftover material and the reason of being black and white is because of the color of their souls and that every monster's soul (exept the Boss ones) are shattered trought the body itself and if a human were figting the protagonist, it would be colorful (photoshop flowey is because of the souls he has). hope it made sense and ask for answers in this comment).

I believe that the humans had magic but after the war they didn't need magic because it seems like there only Enmey was the monsters.
6:11 - The star attack plays out just like the "Ancient" spell in Seiken Densetsu 3, not only that, Asriel's design even has elements of the Dark Lich in both SD3 and Secret of Mana (his later form in which he has no legs). Go look at both characters. And the music, Hopes and Dreams could easily fit at the final boss fight against the Mana Beast.

Temmie was one of the artists who worked on the game. I get the feeling that Temmies have just as much power as the Annoying Dog or Asriel or whoever, but are just too silly to use it to it's full extent.
Vintage Issues temmie wears blue though.
Don't you fight a Tem at some point in the cave? I mean, if you're playing the pacifist route, you encounter her, but if you're doing the genocide run (like many characters) she's not there.

You are partially correct. A monster only melts if they are OVERLOADED with DT. If they only have a little to a non-lethal amount, they're fine. Alphys kept injecting over and over again, so they came to life, but also melted.
Tru, they do have weaker souls, so boss monsters probably have a higher amount of each trait. Plus we don't know whether the red soul is dt nor if soul trait changes how many dt they have and we may never know
I think the amount of determination a monster can withstand depends largely on their health. Undyne has a ludicrous amount of determination - enough to not only bring herself back from the brink of death, but to force her own half-scattered dust into a new and more powerful form. Not even Frisk can give themselves that kind of stat boost, unless that's what happened during the fight with Omega Flowey (it's hard to say who was responsible for Frisk's seemingly larger HP bar during that fight).
But when Undyne's newly-boosted HP got low, she began to melt. Bear in mind, the Amalgamates started out as monsters who had fallen down - when Alphys injected them, they were already on the verge of death.
This makes me think that as long as a monster is healthy, they can handle having a lot of determination in their bodies, but if their HP gets dangerously low, then they start to melt.

My theory on human magic is that undertale takes place in the future and what the monsters assumed in the past was a special type of magic was actually just superior human technology and the reason why humans aren't magical anymore is that, how alphys shows, the monsters have now an advanced understanding of science.
i think its to see attacks clearer like when asgores eye makes orange and blue light. i think the backround is black to help witch concentration and the green grid is just for a nice retro style

Fun fact: white is formed by everysingle color in a rainbow (every color). Therefore while asriel moves around in his fight he leaves behind colors and he himself is the mix of them all. It also explains that monster souls require all seven traits of humans to survive but all of them only have a small amout (except undyne)

There is a weird moment at waterfall when papyrus is shown after you kill him.
This happens by moving left during the papyrus and undyne meeting after killing papyrus. It's so weird!

sans' eye flashes in cyan and yellow
asgore's trident is red, but can change to cyan and orange
toriel's eyes are dark red
undyne's SOUL mode switches appear red and green
fans also like to give papyrus a yellow/orange/blue flashing eye

My personal theory is that it represents whoever’s, or whatever’s, SOUL colors, and hence why Omega/Photoshop Flowey is colored. Although, this does not accommodate for colored *magic*, like the blue, orange, green, etc.

Nobody does that on their first play through. NOBODY. If Toby puts extra work in to make sure that no stone is left unturned, as a special measure, he is NOT going lazy on something as important as COLOR.

I like the idea that the fights are in black and white to symbolize black and what thinking and actions.You see this while reading a lot of text in the game, too. Like how monsters talk about how they are made of all good things and that humans don't need love in their hearts to be able to live (black thinking). How Papyrus is so determined to believe you can do better that he lets you kill him (white thinking). All or nothing mentality. Not to mention in fights there's only two real endings: you kill, or you don't.
Only thing that makes my theory mildly fall apart is the fact that Photoshop Flowey and Asgore have color in their fighting sprites.

Tyler Nathaniel I’m pretty sure things that are in color are important forms of magic like sans his blue and green eye I’m pretty sure that’s just to show he activated his power,undyne’s spear is magic too I believe and the same for asgore’s trident.
