    I shared this video with some friends this morning. This is what I wrote: Sometimes it isn't about the talent - just the ability and freedom to express - no matter what we find ourselves doing. Sometimes, not the world, but people, can be so difficult and convoluted - at times, such drudgery. Then, once in a while, a bright light comes along, and gives you that certain hope to press on. This is one of those "shiny stars" - by the end, the whole place is shinning. While misery may love company, goodness is still infectious. I will be more alert today, to find a comfort and confidence of being - of acting genuinely in all the little things - while exercising a more gentle and inviting creativity.
    Wishing you all a good day. Thank you for posting this, and thank you for sharing. Jacob Collier - genius, genuine, bright light.

    • @sodeste6053
      @sodeste6053 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      thombran are you a musician? Not to say that any music is only for musicians but there are lots of things that people who aren’t may not pick up; as someone who’s only brushed the surface of music theory, there’s quite a bit of technique I imagine I’m not fully understanding. I think it’s similar to listening to rap in another language and hearing that it’s good but not picking up on intricate wordplay or something like that

    • @thombran
      @thombran 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sodeste6053 Hi there. I understand your point and sure, there may be theory stuff here that escapes me. But my answer to that is that when I hear Beethoven, I'm not aware of the complexities of theory either, and I don't have to be : it's still music that speaks directly to the soul. I still have a deep love and appreciation for his music, even if I'm not versed in advanced music theory. But I cannot say the same about Collier. The theory may or may not be there, but the passion, the creativity, the delight to the ears, is something that I'm not receiving at all. Thus, I'm not very impressed at all. You can have all the theory you want, but if what you produce fails to inspire, then how is what you do any better than the average Britney spears song?

    • @sodeste6053
      @sodeste6053 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      thombran that’s the THING there’s a reason for all of it!!! Like in his song Hideaway where he transitions from one tuning of A to another because it makes the song open up, or the use of polyrhythms to give it momentum! I think my favorite example is his cover of Moon River, because when I just close my eyes and listen to it I can *feel* all the changes and I don’t know WHY the mood shifts but it’s MAGIC, and then I go watch an interview and it was a change to a microtonal key!!! That’s just amazing to me, idk. And I definitely understand what you mean; he’s always saying that the theory doesn’t matter unless you’re using it to MEAN something, and I agree. I like the music anyway because I find it so different to what I’m used to, as it engages me differently and makes me FEEL differently, but I think having a bit more understanding makes me appreciate it even more.

    • @sodeste6053
      @sodeste6053 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      thombran in summary, to each their own I suppose. If it doesn’t inspire you, that’s understandable; we all have different tastes. But we’re treating him like Mozart because musically, what he does is mind-blowing and revolutionary (to us at least), and even if you don’t like his music, what he’s doing now could have massive repercussions in terms of inspiring future artists. He’s adding new colors to the palette, so to speak, and you may not like those colors but they add a whole new range of possibilities.

    WOWWWWWWWW.... This guy Jacob Collier is something else! What a beautiful, soulful and utterly powerful version of this song.... When the entire venue was singing in unison at the end, I couldn't help but smile from ear to ear.... Something very cathartic about this performance........ Dare I say he's a legend already?!?!?!?!

    Probably my favourite live performance of anything that Jacob has done, even BBC proms and all other tours. I've listened to this dozens of times. Keep coming back to it. The energy between Jacob and the crowd is just so infectious.

    This is purely a magical moment btwn musicians. The EPIC silence at the beginning made it seem like he was alone while the harmony at the end ensured that he wasn't.

    No matter the time of day.. I can't watch this without getting this unbreakable chiseled smile on my face when the entire crowd breaks out in singing "and I'll be there, yes, I'll will".. we're truly blessed to share our days with the musical genius that is Jacob Collier.. in 200 years, I'll be long forgotten, but they'll still be talking about him.

      That's what good humor in music sounds like. Not these simple "wannabe-funny" lyrics in some songs to force a laugh out of the listener. That's a real demonstration that music is in fact a kind of language with all features such as questions, answers, statements, arguments and humor, through which people can communicate.
