Thanks for asking the Michael Ignatief comparison question. Also, we need to address the toxic nature of partisan politics, which is the way the political right approaches the popularity question. Conservatives do not respect truth, and their attacks are increasingly personal. America has become so toxic, that you cannot argue in good faith with the other side. Thanks for addressing that concern as an 'academic' having to jump into the mud with them. I would have liked to hear his opinion on Christia Freeland, but then I realized this interview is 2 months old. Hopefully you will do another interview early in the new year.

Thanks, Nate. Great interview. I think Mark and the liberals need to simplify the messaging for Canadians to win them back. Commingling growth to sustainability, in part, makes perfect sense, but I doubt it would win the votes given how politicised climate change issues are.

When the Federal Liberals are flirting with absolute political ruin for the next 10-15 years a la the Ontario Liberals, the last thing any voter wants to hear about is how the major ideas the potential next Liberal leader has are ESG development and wealth redistribution. It's unfathomable how tone deaf this party has become. The first thought when improving Canadian productivity shoulnd't be the increase in taxes that the government gets to take, it should be the thriving of the Canadian economy. This is the most out of touch interview I've ever listened to.

We're at that point with the federal liberals too. What happened to the cons in 2015 is exactly what's coming for the liberals next election. And it'll be a con gov't for at least the next 9 years. I'd wager that a meaningful debate between Pollievre and Carey would demonstrate how unprepared Pollievre would be if elected. 'Hoping he saves Canada' seems like a nice sentiment. I've never listened to Carey before, and I'm certain that the 'average voter' would likely rather buy-in to the simplistic approach Pollievre proposes than to unpack everything discussed during this overwhelmingly intelligent and forward thinking discussion.

@@Apollo-k1nMark has a very strong message for the middle class. He’s just teasing here.
He believes the Social Contract is broken. That capitalism has gone too far, and as a result society as a whole has been corrupted. He’s as well versed in Smith, as he is in Marx.
He’s a distributor. Someone from the inside, who’s not happy with what he saw. Because he also sees what’s to come.
Now people are right. He’s a self professed technocrat. Which is why Trudeau will be the one selling his message. For the folks where only slogans matter, it’s Trudeau. For the people who care about the details (Blue Grits and Red Tories) they’ll care about the in depth takes.
They’ll even out flank the NDP with the promise of Universal Skills Training. Because Mark is a student of Philosophy and History too, he understands that Education is the best antidote to a sick society.

I really have a hard time trusting Mr Carney. He is an elite business person & may offer some good insight for Canada but he is terribly conflicted.
He’s far too committed to clean energy in Canada while supporting oil in other countries. Also if he is an honest good faith Canadian that wants Canada to prosper he would have no reason to avoid disclosure.
Mr Carney is choosing not to address conflicts of interest, WEF ties, his century initiative ideological position and this makes him look like more of the same.

This guy seems to have honourable goals for helping fix the environment but to be honest I'm glad he won't be holding the position of finance minister. We have more important things to focus on right now.
Edit: ok so after now having listened to the full interview i definitely don't want this guy to be our finance minister. The way that he speaks about "bringing people along" and "the dignity of a job" combined with his lukewarm reception to socialist topics betrays him as exactly the kind of optimistic elitist that you might find in silicon valley. That is my sense after listening to him speak for an hour.
On the other hand, I've come out of this video very happy to have Mr. Erskine-Smith as our housing minister. The way that he speaks about housing issues is exactly the kind of thing we need more of in government.

This Mark carney guy thinks Pierre Poilievre doesn’t know what he’s doing when he does. Pierre Poilievre has been mentored by Stephan Harper which he is a former well respected PM but also an expert in economics. When you print money to pay the interest payments on the country deficit. Not only does it cause inflation but it also devalues that currency. The more you have of something the less valuable it is. The less you have of something the more valuable it is. This Mark Carney guy should advise this idiot PM that we have now to pay down the country’s deficit. Soft on crime is not good for the economy, high taxes, high bureaucracy, high immigration, a housing crisis, safe injection sites. All of these things are not good for the economy. All under Justin Trudeau.
