I like how she put in her own kind of spin/rendition of this song rather than singing it the way that Marvin Gaye did.

Since the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown, we've lost 5 of the original Funk Brothers: Richard "Pistol" Allen, 2002, Johnny Griffith, 2002, Joe Hunter, 2007, Uriel Jones, 2009, and Bob Babbitt, 2012. THE GREATEST HIT MACHINE IN MUSIC HISTORY.

They played on more hits, and sold more records than in the history of the World! And hardly anyone even knew their names. What an absloute tradgedy. They were, and are amazing an inspirational. Nobody ever said anything in this life was fair..I just pray that they somehow get their due..They molded history.

Three of these guys have passed since making this film. Pistol Allen, Johnny Griffith, Uriel Jones- all gone now. Most of the Funk Brothers are now part of history.
Thanks Alan "Dr. Licks" Slutsky for finally getting them some well deserved recognition.

What's Going On is the most personal protest song I've ever heard. It's like Marvin Gaye sent a message straight to our souls. Chaka did great justice to this song!
It makes my eyes fill with tears when I think of how many of the Funk Brothers are gone now. There will NEVER be another assembly of musicians like them.

I went to see Standing In The Shadows of Motown at the cinema. The story is remarkable; inspirational and almost heart-breaking at the same time. The music has changed the musical landscape. So wonderful that the remaining Funk Brothers had this moment. There is something about this moment that is transcendental. Marvin song with Chaka's performance here is from somewhere else ...and I've got pretty much every album of hers ...I've watched hundreds of videos and seen her in concert around 5 times. I remember watching it in the cinema and when she started the improvs being transported somewhere else. I went home and in my dreams the song and performance were being replayed. This moment and everyone involved in it from Marvin's original, the Funk Brothers, the backing vocalists, the use of film archive and the breathtaking magic that Chaka brings to it. One of my favourite musical moments and one of the most special video clips on TH-cam I've ever seen.

Her voice is so smooth. What struck me the first time I saw the video is how effortless her singing is, even when she is scatting. The Funk Brothers - they had it going like no other group of musicians I can think of. Thanks Motown for all the great music.

Imagine performing this song with the men who actually recorded it all those years ago with Marvin Gaye, the fathers of Mowtown themselves! I love Chaka Khan and everyone else that performed on this DVD and think that their music is awesome but compared with the greatness of these musical pioneers they're just young players.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a great video, a must see for any music lover. James Jamerson is the greatest bass player of all time, and Babbitt did a great job filling in. Just wanted to see more of him playing it in the vid, instead of the constant shot of the xylophone. Great vocals by Chaka, tough to take on such an iconic classic and not get slammed for it.

  • @jwalkerjr521

I have the VHS tape and DVD and have watched the whole thing many, many times. Closest thing to a time machine. Though "What's Going On" was performed a bit fast for me, it is still as good as it gets. Superb Vocals, and what can you say about the Funk Brothers? The Quality and smoothness is almost beyond imagination. Babbit playing that Jamerson bass line as close as could be at almost twice speed.
