haha I've recently just come back from holiday doing some paddle boarding for the first time and took to it quite well. I told everyone the guy renting out the boards said to me "hoy no professionals!"
What I like about this scene is how for once, Tim, the usually quick witted wind up merchant, is on the receiving end of a brutal putdown and doesn't know how to retort, instead just going on the defensive. And the IT guy says no more after his remark about Dawn because he knows he's got him, by simply saying five words nonchalantly. Brilliantly done and it shows that even a seemingly well liked guy such as Tim can occasionally be embarrassed with ease.
Tim deserved that, he was just showing off in front of his new girlfriend by trying to make geeks look stupid. Tim is a nice guy and a relatable character, but now and again he makes a fool of himself. But that just makes him a more realistic protagonist, because who doesn't?

I once had an IT guy tell me 'RTFM' rather than just give me the answer quickly, but even when I played the game of massaging his ego it took several more e-mails back-and-forth and two days had elapsed before he actually told me what to do. That kind of behaviour is par for the course I reckon, the power mad bull$hitters!

Agree that this is the most unnervingly accurate physical and verbal depiction of the typical office IT guy, right down to the Jack Daniels T-shirt and waistcoat. It was the finest piece of guest casting in the entire series of The Office. The guy should've won a BAFTA or whatever UK TV award for Best Cameo or Guest Perfomance.
The bit where Gareth proudly points to his go karting certificate he’s actually put up at work as some kind of achievement. The writing of this show is truly some of the best ever created.
There’s no other character Gareth looks up to in such awe as he does to Simon. And you can tell he believes every word that Simon tells him. It’s brilliant.
As an I.T. guy myself, one should remember that this scene is simply unrealistic and wrong. One would never hit "cancel" upon the installation of a firewall being completed since that would negate the entire process. The installation would necessitate a secondary routine in MSDOS which would simply demand an affirmative response from the user by offering no counter-options but simply the presentation of a message telling the user the DOS routine had reached a successful climax. The writers clearly weren't professionals.
It's also awkward because Tim doesn't like to admit that he was interested in Dawn because she goes out with one of the warehouse workers who could easily beat Tim's ass, and because it makes him look weak, pining after somebody else's girl.

In 1982 we had our first VCR player and I was talking to my mates at school how good it was and one said ours was crap because his could record on both sides of the cassette, he also clamed his dad had a 180mph Jaguar and the reason we never seen it or his dad was he worked on an oil rig.
We had a double sided VCR in the 80s called a Phillips 2000. Sounds a bit like Harry Potters broomstick (Nimbus 2000). It was exceptionally good however as soon as my Dad had bought it the local Video store shut down and all you could get was Betamax. We were a little bit gutted to say the least. At the time it was a big deal to have a VCR and all we could do with it was record Coronation Street !
This scene is the tragic hero theme of the whole script in microcosm. It would have been so easy for the scene to end with Tim on top, being the funny guy. The genius is how jarring the put-down is, how it reminds you everyone's imperfect.

Very early on during production, Bruce got wind that Hollywood was calling to do a movie with him, so he decided to hold on to the title "Enter" for his Hollywood break. So this guy who claims to be a "Big fan" of Bruce and giving this other dude crap is a poser. Don't believe me? Go look up the interview while on-set Bruce had while working on "Way" on the phone with Alex Ben Block, he calls his movie Enter several times and talks about casting Chuck Norris for it.

I'd say I have an average understanding of computers, not an expert but not a novice either. Everyone I've ever spoken to who's more computer literate that me sounds *EXACTLY* like this guy.
Holness has a powerful range as an actor. While there's a common thread of "braggart twit" to his performances, seeing the difference between his grandiloquent and hackish Garth Marenghi and the quiet, cold, slightly genuinely frightening aura of the IT guy is impressive.
Yes, his character's ego is self-inflated in both roles, but from completely different angles and making up two characters who would act very differently in similar situations. A lot of people couldn't get across a character with a general trait of "self-absorbed/arrogant" in such different ways according to the more subtle nuances informing that trait.
My next door neighbour was exactly like Simon. It got to a point though where you can’t call him out on his bullshit because you’d feel bad and weirdly end up looking like the prick. It’s a vicious game these nerds play 🤣
I once got stuck with the IT guy at my office mapping the drive on my laptop (god knows?). 45 minutes of telling me about medieval combat and sword fighting. Simon is the most realistic character ever.
You'd be hard to find a scene that isn't perfectly blocked, executed, etc. My favorite part of this scene is that it shows, through contrast, how Tim's wind-ups of Gareth are essentially light-hearted. You're made to empathize with Tim as he shows disgust at Simon's belittling treatment of Gareth.

Here is me being a neck beard ha ha. But technically, during production, Way of the Dragon was called "ENTER" the Dragon. Very early on during production, Bruce got wind that Hollywood was calling to do a movie with him, so he decided to hold on to the title "Enter" for his Hollywood break. So this guy who claims to be a "Big fan" of Bruce and giving this other dude crap is a poser. Don't believe me? Go look up the interview while on-set Bruce had while working on "Way" on the phone with Alex Ben Block, he calls his movie Enter several times and talks about casting Chuck Norris for it.
It's fine to read up on Bruce Lee's life as a source of inspiration, he was an amazing guy, but when you get some lazy fool who gets no exercise and clearly learned nothing from anything Bruce Lee actually did or said, is just a pretentious pedant about trivia in order to appear deeper than they are and to score points over easily-impressed people, that's annoying

“Gone off Dawn now have you” is one of the most underrated funniest lines in the whole series, the way he delivers it is spot on.

I'd say I have an average understanding of computers, not an expert but not a novice either. Everyone I've ever spoken to who's more computer literate that me sounds *EXACTLY* like this guy.
Holness has a powerful range as an actor. While there's a common thread of "braggart twit" to his performances, seeing the difference between his grandiloquent and hackish Garth Marenghi and the quiet, cold, slightly genuinely frightening aura of the IT guy is impressive.

Yes, his character's ego is self-inflated in both roles, but from completely different angles and making up two characters who would act very differently in similar situations. A lot of people couldn't get across a character with a general trait of "self-absorbed/arrogant" in such different ways according to the more subtle nuances informing that trait.

I once got stuck with the IT guy at my office mapping the drive on my laptop (god knows?). 45 minutes of telling me about medieval combat and sword fighting.

You'd be hard to find a scene that isn't perfectly blocked, executed, etc. My favorite part of this scene is that it shows, through contrast, how Tim's wind-ups of Gareth are essentially light-hearted. You're made to empathize with Tim as he shows disgust at Simon's belittling treatment of Gareth.
A bloke where I work reckons he's the third best table tennis player in the world.

The details that are shown here are eerie by how accurate they are: the 70s style jet black hairstyle, the side burns, the old school military style vest, the shameless brooding, the overassertion of his supposed intelligence, the love/obsession with old movies, etc,
