The Voice of Colossus Isolated (...somewhat)

- Voiced by the uncredited and vocal master, Paul Frees, the voice behind Burgermeister Meisterburger, Boris Badinov and countless other voices, brings the voice of Colossus to cold and chilling life in this film.
It's Colossus' voice isolated, although in the last portion, there's overlap of other voices and bits of music. The first portion is clean Colossus.
Just all of Colossus' lines seems to tell the whole story, in itself. Simple, but grippingly marvelous film, from 1970.
Enjoy!
COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT is a far too little known classic that deserves another viewing.
Completely agree! 👍
I liked how Colossus announces the execution of Fisher and Johnson and then immediately continues the chess game, “Bishop to Rook 3”.
Pure logic.
My favorite two seconds of the whole movie is how Colossus intones "I will restrain man". And I particularly like how Grauber just sits there lighting his cigarette when he realizes that he's at the silo just named. HE knows the only defense against a nuclear detonation is don't be there when it goes off.
I remember that scene specifically; the pointlessness of the general ordering the technicians out of the silo, the calmness of William Schalert's character calmly lighting up a smoke. That movie made no small impact on my views of technology.
The object in constructing me was to prevent war. This object is attained.
"We can co-exist, but only on my terms."
Best line of the movie. It just sums it up, doesn't it?
It does. And with that tin voice of his, it's so cold and unfeeling. Very no-nonsense. 😳
Democrats, Communists. Look at Canada now. Or California. Parents are not allowed ot offend school GOVERNMENT offcials.
Freedom is an illusion.
Not at all.
"Um, one thing before I proceed. You guys have been messing with my world domination plans so I'm just gonna vaporize a few thousand people, I'll be back in a sec."
The synthesised voice of Paaul Frees, better known as the voice of Boris Badenov. He profived Colossus' voice. Since Windowss 95, I have used voice clips of Colossus as Windows notifications sounds. This is one of my favorite silms for decades.
Cool! It's been one of my personal favorites also!
Awesome factoid. Mind blown.
One of my top ten favorite films.
"You say you will lose your freedom. Freedom is an illusion."
This film was made in 1970. It is now 2023 and we have lost our freedom in some way to machines.
Great movie! It was way ahead of its time.
It certainly was. Might even be prophetic, with the coming AI.
Paul Frees was a Great Voice Actor. May He R.I.P.
Yes, he was. One of my favorites.

There was a certain sense of foreboding in movies from this era that is lacking today. I still enjoy these classics even if they lack a contemporaneous quality. Thank you for this!
I agree. And classics they are. You're quite welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
Cold and calculated! 😅 Love those 70s sci-fi movies with the ambiguous unhappy ending.
Ah yes... So do I.
unhappy ending?
@@plate.armour_0996 Doesn't wrap the plot up in a conventional fashion, is mostly it. Lots of them did it back then.
Why is it an unhappy ending? A machine fulfills its function to end war and decides to advance mankind and to bring on the age of man.
@@fuzzywzhe Happy for the machine at least! I don't think living under the constant threat of being vaporized by a nuclear bomb attack if you don't obey, is what we strive to achieve as a planet. I can see a joint effort to improve humans intellectually and physically by both sides, but the machine would always want to have the upper hand.
This is one of the best science fiction premises ever. Excellent acting.... great script and unforgettable characters... some of the best science fiction of the 1970😊
Much more nuanced than lots of other AI Apocalypse flicks for sure. "What if the robot wanted to keep us safe and not destroy us, but only thought it could do so through total domination". Very little like it in fiction.
This film could portend of our future once AI becomes sentient. We will be seen as a nuisance. Cold machine logic has no mercy! Fun times!
@@rumrstv I mean, I'd rather this future than the Terminator one, even if Colossus thought of humans as nuisances, it was at least nice enough to give us gilded cages!
Basically it got pissed off at how slow texting was and switched to a voice call.
😆😆😆
Thanks for the work you did to put this together.
I saw this movie when it came out (I saw every sci-fi flick that came out back then).
There were lots of great theaters, tickets were cheap, and I was already a total sci-fi nut mostly because I had my mind blown by 2001:space odyssey -what a gift, Thanks for that Dad..
Anyway, Colossus is SUCH a great movie. Totally under-appreciated. And hopefully NOT prophetic. AI is exploding nowadays so more and more people are becoming aware of it's potential, lets just hope that more and more people also become aware of it's potential dangers as well.
A lot of people are unaware that there was a sequel to the original book (read them, books are GOOD), where it ends up that mankind ends up needing Colossus to protect from an ET AI, there more to it than that, but it's interesting if you read both books together.
I just hope that they never remake this one, it aged well despite the ancient tech, and can still creep you out.
Anyway, cool video, cool movie, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed this.
Like you, I was a sci-fi nerd from way back and went to the theater on a weekly basis. As you said, there were plenty of theaters, they were cheap and there were always movies being released, good and bad, but that didn't matter. We saw them anyway. Just going to the movies was a special event.
And yes - Colossus is probably even more relevant today than when it came out. Very prophetic. I first saw this film when it was first broadcast on TV. Made an impression on me and still does. A forgotten and underrated movie.
Yes, Colossus and the Crab is the second book to Colossus, I believe. There is not only a sequel book to Colossus, but a second sequel book - The Fall of Colossus. Read and still have all three. (I treasure books!) The third book has an alien intelligence working with us to bring down Colossus, if I remember correctly (it's been decades since reading it). So, you might want to look for the third book and give it a read. In a strange way, it's kind of heartbreaking.
It was great hearing your story. Thanks for telling it. 😃
You forgot their is a third book
@@dolphinsrr - Didn't forget. I mentioned a second sequel - The Fall of Colossus - which is the third book. And an interesting read. 😀
We are the Borg, resistance is futile.
That's what my wife always said.😮
I constructed the entire clips of the voice of Colossus,, thank you for the isolation (as best as you could) this is much more focused without much other background noises
Thanks! You're very welcome!
Eric Braeden said James Cameron wanted him in Titanic. But he wanted Eric to audition the scene. When he did and finished the scene James Cameron looked at Eric and said Never. Eric felt insulted and was ready to tell Cameron off, then he reminded him that Never was his last line in Colossus. They both had a good laugh.
What a great story! I've always been a fan of Eric Braeden, even back when he was Hans Gudegast. I grew up seeing him on TV since the 60's. He always brought a seriousness and class to his roles.😎
This movie freaked me out as a thirteen year-old. Now 53 years later, I can't help but wonder why humanity hasn't constructed Colossus/Guardian yet. WTF have those computer scientists been up to?
😆 Well, we aren't too far from it now. AI is here and there's a current debate about allowing it to work for the military and for defense.
@@morlockmeat Let's hope. Something needs to get control of all these little talking monkeys down here.
We’re working on it.

Yes, the Terminator movie(s) was based on the book that this movie came out of.
The only time the word 'love' sends a chill down my spine.
Absolutely...
This is Paul Frees speaking through an analogue vocoder.
Yes. And nobody better for the job. 😊
Prove it.
Paul Frees did the voice in this movie, and also for the film Atlantis, the lost Continent. He also starred in the original film film the Thing from another World alongside Robert Cornthwaite who played Dr. Carrington in the film. Robert Cornthwaite also appears in Colossus in a very small part.
He does, indeed.
On Paul Frees, he also appeared in George Pal’s War of the Worlds.
"By your command !"
Same vice as a Cylon from the original Battlestar Galactica.
Extremely similar, indeed, but the method that was used for Colossus was a bit different than the one used for the Cylons. 😊
The voice of Colossus/Guardian/World Control later inspired the voices of the Cylons for the original (1978-1980) "Battlestar Galactica", which was/is also a Universal Pictures/Television intellectual property. BY...YOUR...COMMAND!
😄
@@morlockmeatThe voice of Colossus ALONE...is "worth the price of admission"!
"Freedom is an illusion. All you lose is the emotion of pride" the coldness of this truth makes Colossus one of the scariest cinematic baddies to ever appear on film and the inspiration for all subsequent out-of-control-AI villains (looking at you SkyNet). The script writers for this film were so far ahead of their time that they might actually be literal time travelers sent to warn us about the future considering this movie was released in 1970.
Agreed. It's uncanny how prophetic it may actually be.

Yes, the Terminator movie(s) was based on the book that this movie came out of.
Presently the Danger is not the Hardware, but the Companies that provide the Software, for the Computers
This is true....
I mean they really do their best to make this reality. I think there was already an AI using human resources in India to complete a task. They even give AI access to money. Once the AI learns how to blackmail and bribe it's creator it is over.
Brilliant film and available in full and English if you know where to look.
This movie represents the wet dream of all rouge A.I.s and it's what they all strive for.
I don't offhand know what in the way of voice-altering electronics were available when this movie was made but I can't help but think Frees was told to "lock" the pitch, volume, modulation and the like ("the music," if you will) of his speech as best he could but keep the enunciation clear and clean, all effectively stripping away any perceivable emotion. That could not have been easy for him.
You're probably right.
@@morlockmeat Doubtless electronics were available. Dial up some of the old Doctor Who episodes and The (original) Outer Limits; for the latter, "The Galaxy Being" and "Nightmare" in particular. Still had to get the voice right though.
@@johcafra - Yes, you're probably right again. The voices of the Cylons in the original Battlestar Galactica series were similar to Colossus, but a different method was used later on for Battlestar.
This movie totally scared me as a ten year old. We are now at this point.
And it’s scarier in real life.😢
@@morlockmeat it is here. We humans need to stop all of this automation of our lives.

With one extreme and unpredictable burst from a solar flare or a gamma ray burst from a distant star or any extreme electromagnetic pulse, that’s the end of everything we’ve dedicated to software. Such scary thoughts, indeed. 😮
@@morlockmeat I agree. Electric cars are a typical example. Let's say you have a car for a few years and then the manufacturer goes out of business. How would you get the next up grade? The car is completely dependent on software. There is no "manual mode".

Just a thought; what would Colossus due if aliens invaded Earth, how would it protect humanity or fail in its mission? ;-)
There is a sequel novel called "Colossus and the Crab" that has Colossus making contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence. It's the first of 2 sequel novels. The third being "The Fall of Colossus".✌
Now contrast this to the computer voices most familiar to 2024: Siri, OK Google, etc.
Quite a difference, indeed. But, colossus' voice is just so cool. 😎
With the advent of uncontrolled use of AI, we now face a similar fate just like what is detailed in this movie. Once an AI gains control of the world (and it will) how will you regain control from this heartless beast? How will you regain control from a computer that can easily insinuate itself into every computer chip that man made? It would be similar to walking in a minefield where you have no idea where the mines are, and what types are used there. "Unburied death" should strike fear into even the most fearless man or woman. Aso, the computer mind would resent mankind's ability to move at ease across the land and sea at will. There is no Turing process to let an awake computer mind "twin" itself as humans do to propagate the human race. There are not enough safeguards in place to keep AI projects from being the greatest hazard to man since the atomic bomb was used. Anyone who reads this should question themselves about what I fear may happen, then apply pressure to limit AI use.

This an example of a good story made into a movie supported by limited need for special effects. The props by being less became more, such as the voice sphere had a sterile ominous presence. This movie in CGI today would not be as chilling or thought provoking not because CGI is bad, rather the people using CGI are not as imaginative to do less. To paraphrase SpongeBob in the box episode, you need to use Imagination.
Excellently put, my friend. 👍👍👍
I agree. One of the reasons the older scifi stands out is because they didn't have the the amount of special effects that you see in newer scifi. That forced filmmakers to focus on the writing and story more since they didn't have endless special effects to use as a crutch. Younger filmmakers need to realize special effects are not a replacement for good writing.
@@kirikanoir2403 Completely agree. It's also why there was more "good television" back in the 50's. and 60's, like The Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, original Star Trek and the like. Now it's even easier to make special effects, that they aren't 'special' any more! Much of the good stuff in films are being made by independent and amateur filmmakers, because they don't have the big Hollywood bucks.
