Which Regal Vise Head are you tying with in this video? Is it the one to tie Midges or maybe the Stainless?
The reason why I want to know this is because I have a Regal with the Traditional Vise Head and it bends the hooks I place into the jaws of the vise. I either tie with a Daiichi 1550 Wet Fly Hook size 10, or a Tiemco 103BL 1X Dry Fly Hook. Maybe that’s the reason why, or is it the vise?
I tilted the vise upward to about a 45 degree angle and that seems to help, but still I have to place the hook in there very carefully.
If it goes into that notch on the inside of the left side of the vise, it’s gonna bend the hook. That notch must be for larger hooks, or ones that have the same shape as the notch like a Maruto Circle Hook size 11. One of the other hooks I use to tie jigs.
Sometimes the jaws of the vise even snaps back at me if I set the hook in the wrong position. Scary! LOL. I found out it has to be in front of the notch where it’s flat on both sides. It’s critical and there’s not that much room to play with. I don’t like it, because it’s very uncomfortable with only that much space in between the tip.
I bought my vise in February of 2019, so it’s to late to return it. I contacted Regal today, I’m hope they can help me.

If you get this, please let me know if I should upgrade to the Midge or maybe even the Stainless Version if either one of them would make a difference. I took a look at the description for each vise, and made my decision on that, but I think I should have gotten the Midge because it’s not made to tie larger hooks. Only down to a size 6. The Traditional goes down to a 1/0. I think that’s the reason why I’m having such a hard time. The Traditional is more likely to accommodate both smaller and larger size hooks, and that’s why there’s a notch. I wish I new about this before I purchased the vise. I had to find out on my own.
I bought a vise from Cabelas a long time ago, and I never had this problem. Only thing I couldn’t move it around.
