Great pattern, Charlie. Having read a couple of Nemes' books. Several years ago, I fished an entire season with these soft hackles/spiders. One of the most productive and enjoyable seasons ever!

Nice! Tying these is like making homemade wine from Muscat Canelli; if you get it just right it's beautiful but if you mess up there's nothing to hide behind & the whole world will know. Nice tip about leaving the tip in, I'll use it for sure! 👍

I watched this 6 months ago...and have no memory of it hah. I even added it to a play list called "fly tying" and still forgot I watched . Going to tie a bunch of these, perhaps 6 months ago I didnt have the skill to tie them. =)

Hard to beat a Partridge and Orange. What fish doesn’t like orange? I like to fish a Guides Choice SH, Pheasant Tail SH along with either a Stewart’s or Davy’s Spider as one of my “go to” rigs. I might also change out the Guides Choice for a thin mint bugger. Pack along a PMD softie and a Graphic Caddis with RSII in chocolate and you can damn near fish the entire season.
I’ve recently gotten into soft hackles and am enjoying fishing the quotes a bit.
Question (to learn, not being critical), why use the orange floss rather that orange thread? I’m just beginning to tie and really don’t know the benefit.
Never understood the black thread being used on patterns like traditional spiders.

The body really, it’s just you split the floss but go twice, is it not the same as once with standard width? I do like the dubbing, I’ve always thought in the faster water they represent a nymph as the hackles flow back over the body…37% better 😀😀😀
No, the whole strand of floss won’t lie as flat as a split strand…more roped, especially on smaller sizes. The hackle is soft, and without the dubbing lies down pretty flat. Propping it up lets the fibers dance a bit more even under flow.

You should be using gloves when handling that floss so you don't get grease all over it!!! (That's what the Atlantic salmon fly tiers do.) ☺ Check out Jonas Andersson on TH-cam.
That’s necessary for competition or display salmon patterns, not here though. I took a class with Ron Alcott once upon a time and yes, he had white gloves for handling floss and other delicate materials.
Morseo tyers used gloves to prevent their rough hands/skin from grabbing the floss and therefore ruining it

I tie trad salmon flies to recipe for fishing with and I’m not using gloves for silks as my hands aren’t too rough or dry and I would never consider using them for expensive feathers just because they’re expensive feathers. To me, going about it like ooooh this feather is rare and costs so much so I’m like gonna bow to it and use white silk gloves to handle it but only after I spent at least two hours deciding what I should tie with it sounds stuffy af up your own backside kinda carry on.
I was have a big time drinking Jamieson and eating some KFC when I got the urge to twist up some soft hackles. Damn things were ugly as hell and mottled from the chicken grease but really caught fish!
