LEZ IS HERE - TOWN DRIVING BANNED

  • Well, the dreaded LEZ has made its way into #Aberdeen. Technically speaking it's been here for at least a year now, although enforcement only officially began on June 1st 2024 meaning that non-compliant vehicles are now liable to be fined for driving into the zone.
    But here's where I see issues. The LEZ boundary makes absolutely zero sense. Sure, there are parts of the city centre where I'm glad to see the back of vehicles but then we tackled that with a car ban. Quite a chunk of the city centre is already off limits to vehicles, but now we've driven what I fear is the final nail in the coffin straight into the heart of our city centre.
    My commute to work/the cinema used to take about 10 minutes. But now it'll take a lot longer as I'll have to basically head round the ring road to get anywhere close. I really do fear for independent traders who are already struggling following the pandemic and of course Brexit.
    Oh...and June also sees the Caddy's MOT due for renewal. How's that going? You'll soon find out...

    It is quite sad to see LEZ making its way into Aberdeen city center, especially when its border is literally next to port with not that clean ferrys and ships. Like with many other laws, doesn't make much sense except to get people's money through tickets and fines. Fortunately for me I have a compliant car, but I really understand how people with 9 or 10 years old diesel cars are annoyed at that whole ridiculous situation. On Fubar News facebook page there is a post from 7th April from a bloke that got screwed by LEZ really bad.

      This is the thing - Virginia Street and Market Street have already had significant air quality improvements in recent years, so why cut off the route into town. Madness..

    My n reg Punto is exempt next year as it’s 30 years old, but my MiL has a 62 plate Kia ceed crdi, she pays no road tax, co2 well under 100g/km 70 odd miles to gallon, much cleaner than my Punto. That’s banned

      The bit they never explain well is the LEZ more to do with Nox, and diesels produce quite a bit more than even an older petrol car. So even though the Punto will use more fuel, and produce more CO2, it puts out less Nox.

      And this is where it all falls down. Perception is its badly flawed. Im not against it in principal, but including Denburn and Virginia St is mental...both are also only signposted when its too late!

      Not to mention, we were all pushed to Diesels for their lower CO2 values to meet climate / global warming targets, but that means more NOx in cities from buses, trucks, and cars, and NOx has more of an impact on human health, so that was also slightly misguided! But KPI's have to be met 🤣I see what you mean, plus everyone coming from the North now has to loop all the way around the zone to get to Union Square. I can see people just not bothering.

      My worry is the LEZ will simply be expanded and newer vehicles eventually included. It's a car ban in all but name!
