    This is a great topic and video. lots of shadetree mechanics learned something here I think, myself included. It took me a bit of pondering to realize how a piston stopper would help you locate the middle. I was in the middle of an A-ha moment when Al verbally put the pieces together.
    I've got a fluid filled solid crank pulley on mine so not an issue, but I can just imagine how many engines get beat up from wrong timing because of this!

  • @ShawnDickens
    @ShawnDickens 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I've done a 1000 LS motors with a dial gauge. Just go down from TDC both ways to the same reading like .005" and mark it like a piston stop. Can leave it in and not turn the motor over 350 degrees either risking catching a valve.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Makes sense. Same method he is showing here. He just meant you can't use the single reading to find true TDC.

    • @spudsmckenzie4123
      @spudsmckenzie4123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shawn Dickens Would that be more accurate too as surely a dial gauge is far more incremental than measuring the outer diameter of the pulley with a ruler?

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@spudsmckenzie4123 Theoretically it should be the same accuracy since you are still getting two outside measurements and still have to use the ruler technique. Like he said in the video, there is dwell where it is at the same height for a duration.

      Dial indicator is great when a head is off, little bit tricky to confirm TDC with a dial indicator on a LS while the heads are on.........

    • @psk1w1
      @psk1w1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If using a dial gauge, it would be more accurate to go to a higher figure. It is also more accurate if you can put a degree disc on the crank, note the 'touch point' angle , and then calculate TDC as the mid-point

    Old motorcycle trick, many engines, especially two strokes specify actual piston stroke before TDC, when plug port was inline with hire, you could use thread pitch to set, or use a plunger dial indicator.
    Wasn't aware it was needed on car engines though, like the two point/contra rotation method, very clever.

    One of my go to test is doing a leak down test. I would be keen to see the Al and Woody take on it. It is a great test for general engine condition and showing up where combustion leakage is occurring. A burnt exhaust valve will pass air through the exhaust manifold for example.

    Loved this video on practical knowledge. In a similar vein, would love to see setting the cam timing up so it all matches. Like if you had to take the cams out to replace a head gasket or replaced the cam wheels or camshafts, how you'd put it all back together so it all lines up. Keep up the good work boys.

    That was really interesting. I once had an American Pontiac Fiero GT that started to make a right noise when the engine was running. Clang clang clang. It was like the thing was falling apart. Turn out the Harmonic Balancer was just like this one with a rubber bonded section. And due to age it had rotted and just fell apart. So the harmonic balancer was just flapping around in the breeze when the engine was running.

    You can use a dial gauge employing the same method.
    I used a gauge that's for setting diesel injector pump timing as it has a long extension rod.
    I guess the benefit is less chance of damaging something.

  • @Beer_Dad1975
    @Beer_Dad1975 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's actually fairly common for the balancer to spin and even separate - I had a harmonic balancer separate on a 2JZ once in my Soarer - smashed up the cooling fan. I was 150km from home at the time so had a fun time replacing it & getting home. A few years later the second hand replacement I had fitted that night also started to spin - this time I heard it before it let go - so I bought a new one - and this is going back at least a decade, so they must be pretty much all rooted by now. I'm betting it's going in a Mercedes, since I've already seen a few Mercs with 2JZ's in them.

    very nice trick! i should totally try this on my truck! its not running the greatest, and has a b*tch of a time starting all the time... when i first checked the timing, it seemed like it was out... but it fired up a bit better than it does after setting the timing to 0* TDC... thank you guys!

    Never thought about making an adjustable stop - made up several many, many years ago that are all of varied fixed lengths using brazed in inserts.
    Hard to see if it is done there, but I'd round off the engine end and use a lock nut (hand tightened) to prevent any rotatation of the stop from piston contact (probably overkill, though).
    Easier to drill and tap using a lathe, BTW.

    I have a Dohc m119 Mercedes engine and they say in the service manual not to turn the engine backwards. Wouldn't going slightly past top dead center then installing the stopper and rotating only slightly backwards to make the first mark be better? Then rotating the correct direction until stopping to make the second.

  • @JohannesKonow

    Aaaaaaaah!
    That's clever. Why didn't I think about that? I've always guestimated where it is based on when the screwdriver or similar stops moving and when it starts moving again and gone for the middle.
    This is way smarter and waaaay more accurate!

    Nice one fellas il add that to the tool box, it will certainly come in handy. Since a trip to the eye and ear hospital with about 100 fragments in my eye from a workplace injury in a mechanics shop with a 5 day stay in hospital with surgery I take safety glasses very seriously and you don't want to end up like me so you should do the same. It was the most painful thing that's ever happened to me in my life. Is the motor going into a rolls although it seems like way to big or a bus for a 7m or a c class merc

  • @stephenwilliamson4556

    I'd personally like to hear about Al and Woodys Careers as mechanics. Where did they do their apprenticeships, how did AM Auto start, how Al and Woody met, how did they initially get involved with MCM etc. Had a Harmonic balancer on my mum's VK Commodore let go back in 1996 on a family trip half way between Ayres Rock (Uluru) and Kings Canyon. (3.3 litre straight 6 grey motor). Had to be towed 144kms back to Ayres Rock to get it fixed.

    You can still use a dial indicator in the same method on hemispherical spark plug engines. Set the peak height at 0. Drop it down a set number on either side of the stroke... say .020" or whatever you fancy to mark the pulley. Granted it leaves more room for human error. But works just as good.
