Did he really say “I don’t like when a model thinks she beautiful, let us tell you that.” This show was just straight toxic waste floating through our TVs
Right?? Like what was that?? 😭 I'm glad I never met any toxicity in my modelling, this is like all bad stereotypes ab this industry, as if it was some bad sitcom.
All men think that way. They hate when you think you're attractive. They want all your self esteem to come from them. Not just them but him specifically. Like each guy wants you to rely on his thoughts of you for your self esteem
Same. To the point to where I would see other people and point out their flaws. I changed that point of view from me when I was 24. I hated doing that and it was for show like this.
I remember reading about some "where are they now" lists and apparently Julie did get her own textile company or something. And like? Good for her?? Love that.
Yeah she like procures, or manufactures textiles and then sells them to companies that make the clothes (probably more money in that honestly) and I’m super happy for her. She could have done that and still modeled, Tyra! Lol
Admitting that your entire world doesn't revolve around modeling always seems to be the kiss of death for these girls. Without fail, when one of them says that they're interested in other things, within an episode or two, they're eliminated.
Tyra had commented, about one of the girl once, that "she needed more grooming." 😳If that doesn't say it all, idk what does! They want these girls to be willing to sacrifice, to do anything &everything they're told, without question. Those that do, qualify to be used &abused, like the good little modeling slaves the industry wants; probably pimped out to a prince or two somewhere over in the Middle East before their career is up. Those that have a standards, morals, or even just a solid backbone... "Well, I'm sorry, but we just don't need that kind of attitude around here. Your self-worth is getting in the way of our profits."
I know right? For someone who wouldn't even look beautiful without any makeup to attack a bunch of girls who definitely do look beautiful without it like that, the nerve.
This is such a terrible expectation to put on someone and it feels like a very old school, ignorant comment. Criticism like this is not something that really SHOULD empower someone. People grow in spite of it, not because of it. And others are crushed by it.
"As a woman of colour you need to wear more makeup... our skin absorbs the light," what kind of nonsense is that?! Bloody hell we look beautiful with and without makeup. She literally projects the outdated negative stereotypes that black people are ugly/undesirable by saying that. I can only imagine what my younger self thought when I heard this
Y’all forget that she comes from a different era and that this was filmed in the early 2000s. Many Blk women had problematic sentiments, especially those older than her i.e her mother. Let’s not blame her for possibly internalizing anti Blk sentiments in an anti Blk society. Blk women still say shxt like this today even when it comes to “good hair bad hair.” The self righteous rhetoric is almost insufferable 🤦🏾♀️
I don’t like Tyra but there was a challenge for them to do their own make up for panel. They just could barely see any on Kelle that’s why she said that. She wasn’t telling her she has to wear make up.
Those girls are freaking beautiful, periodt! I remember some years back on Tyra’s talk show, she was made VERY upset because the press took unflattering pictures of her on the beach, in a bikini after she had gained some weight. She made this HUGE spectacle about how awful shaming women for their appearance is… And that is totally true, but perhaps she could have taken her own advise to let the “criticism” make her “better”
@@Sunflower_Cats Improve, NOT cure. Also the majority of people in modern day have a Vit D deficiency, and as someone who had one for years, it certainly didn't cure my depression or suicidal ideations. Research has shown it can help REDUCE depression in people with mild cases, curing however is not a thing that vitamins or sun can do. It's ridiculous and reeks of toxic positivity, but sadly people keep acting like its so easy. (this is not towards you btw)
Tyra is such a good example of a narcissist and you can tell that she's actually very insecure about herself and masking it by putting everyone else down so she can be on top. She's so dramatic it actually helped me recognise toxic behaviours when they're not on paper only. Her gaslighting is just *chef's kiss*. I still can't believe how could she get away with such blatant bullying for so long... And thank you Jessica for opening up about your acne problem. I've always admired your skin and it surprised me that you struggle with the same condition I do. It had to take a lot of courage to show the pictures - and you're still beautiful on them but now I have even more respect for you. Go queen!
Because back in the early 2000, starting with Simone Cowell, the bullying and blatant mean-ness was so in. Everyone on TV wanted to be some version of that and people ate it up..I was always aware of that. Even if you watch the Den of dragons, forgot his name but the call him “Mr. Wonderful” he is so mean, and once called this brown girl a “cockroach”.
Yeah, season 4 before Tyra has her meltdown on Tiffany, she's hugging her and supporting her, pretending to care. I know a narcissist and it's the same. They "help" others so it gives them an ego boost, but will flip out and abuse that person the next minute
I agree! Tyra is not what she used to appear as. Also cystic acne is physically painful and scars easily. So it can be hard to cover. It’s horrible when you get them.
Eva was going to win this season. At the start of the competition, the first question on this show is, Why do you want to be a model? And Eva's response was "I'm here because I want to be famous" She brought her A game and was going to win by any means.
The judges are just unnecessarily vicious. They are literally the embodiment of the worst side of the modelling industry. I get its cut throat, but just because Tyra had a tough time, doesn’t mean every model needs to hit rock bottom to prove themselves. It seems more like a ‘let’s push them to their limits until they break and realise they’re not cut out for modelling’ rather than lets nurture and give these aspiring models the tools they need to excel in the industry.
I cannot believe we watched this as young women and thought this was legitimate in any way. This show is disgusting. It needs to be wiped from history. Every person on that judge panel should be ashamed of themselves for their bullying behavior. You can even see the models absorbing this energy as they “help”(gossip about) the model who is struggling with an eating disorder. What an nightmare.
I was thinking the same, now years later when I'm a case manager at behavioral health and trying to help young women that have major self esteem issues I look back at this and its like "god to think I ever wanted to be on that show". Cause yes at one time I hoped I could lose enough weight and maybe do something like that, never happened and honestly glad for it! I can't believe I watched as many seasons of it as I did, I refuse to watch any of the current stuff and haven't watched it for about 10 years, best decision really.
Some of the stuff was absolutely ridiculous on the show but at the same time, this isn’t an easy field to try to get in especially at this time, so in that sense, they were being realistic to how brutal people in this industry can be.
I had the same thought. How are you supposed to take a critique of your natural beauty and use it to make yourself more naturally beautiful!? This isn't The Swan. I think this is a real life Mean Girls show. They just tear these ladies down and make the entire world feel like fake is best and aging is beneath them. I bet all of these ladies need a lot of therapy after the show. I can't believe I used to watch Tyra. She is a HORRIBLE influence on females of all ages.
No, we should not wipe it from history, because then people wouldn't have anything to learn from, such as how accepting we (general "we") were of toxic behaviors...just ten years ago, and how far we still have to go, along with how to identify and call out such behaviors (and logical fallacies). Wiping off unpleasantries of the past is just editing and sanitizing history, which would be irresponsible, dishonest, and EXACTLY the same as teaching farce history. Just because we dislike an event in history, it doesn't mean that we should be weak and take the easy way out: erasing it.
Remember when Tyra was caught unawares at the beach and a paparazzi got her at a bad angle, and there was at LEAST an entire episode on her talk show to explain away how that photo wasn’t accurate and she literally came out on stage in the “same” swimsuit. Insanity.
That sounds an awful lot like someone was playing the Blame Game 🤔 The fact she came out in the same swimsuit to prove... whatever, who cares... is actually just sad. ANTM is just 2 decades of Tyra violently projecting her insecurities onto younger women.
Oh yes- the “kiss my fat a$$” monologue. She said “on behalf of all the girls who get teased” when she’s tearing down beautiful girls like it doesn’t matter unless it’s her
I think the difference is that Tyra was at the beach being a normal person not a model....these girls are on a show about being a MODEL! Do you think the fashion world is nice or kind? Tyra was giving the the same energy they would get for the rest of there time in the buisness. It's not for the weak as it's been said by multiple models over the years it's not something for people with thin skins
@@crazycatlady7866 it wasn't ok, but it was definitely more accepted. I was in high school in the '00s and it was a truly garbage time. There was a lot of focus on being flawless and cool, and giving tough love to those who weren't. Mean Girls was popular because it resonated deeply with a lot of us and our experiences. ANTM was pretty widely loved and respected by a lot of people when it came out and even I, who was bullied relentlessly, didn't sit there and think "well, this is toxic". It was just par for the course, and what you needed to do to be cool. I look back on this show now through Jessica's videos, and Brad Mondo's videos, and it makes my blood boil. I want to jump in front of those girls and defend them with my life.
when i was younger and struggled with acne, i would have loved to see someone with the same struggles feeling confident and strong. it would have made my teenage years a lot simpler
yesss, i wish more people understood that having acne doesn't mean you're unhygenic. acne is a highly heritable condition, and you can't control whether you get it or not
@Bella Secrets legit! I admittedly have TERRIBLE skin- scarring, acne, rosacea, just everything and I swear down, if I drink 2-3 litres of water- my skin is so much better the next day
I remember this episode.... and I remember screaming internally at how GORGEOUS all their unretouched photos were. Like wow. I did not see what the judges saw. Thank god
I can’t believe I used to look up to Tyra as a kid, I was an avid watcher of ANTM from elementary to high school and I was a HUGE fan of Tyra. Now as a 28 year old and seeing how problematic this show was and Tyra was it’s shocking. Like Tyra was just a straight up gaslighter and bully throughout this series
I remember watching an episode of ANTM with my mom when I was in elementary school and she changed the channel halfway through the episode because she didn't like the way Tyra was gaslighting the girls in the form of "constructive criticism." I'm glad Tyra Banks has all but faded into obscurity and is irrelevant now.
@@brett8460 I was so tired of her behaviour on the show, many many years ago, that I actually googled 'Tyra Banks ridiculous' just like that. I was very surprised and very happy at the same time, seeing the search results, because that way I realized most people disgread with the way she treated people ( and the world is made mostly of nice people :) ).
I liked the show when I was a kid until she made fun of a girl for having a gap between her teeth. It lowered my confidence and the next time I went to the dentist, I asked them for braces. The dentist said my gap is natural and that my teeth are very straight. Braces aren't necessary. It took me years to finally accept my gap.
Yes ! Yes! Yes! I agree. Completely looked up to her and watching this back now I am absolutely appalled 😳 This show probably contributed toward my insecurities growing up..
@@KarinaGarcia-nk7kv Aww, that's so sad. I really hope she is doing okay now. And the trauma from this whole situation isn't still harming her self esteem in any way.
@@BratzRockAngels Kelle did an interview with the TH-camr Oliver Twixt some time ago and she seems really well-adjusted and successful now. She looks exactly the same too.
Even first watching this season when I was younger I thought Kelly was so beautiful. She also seemed like such a sweet person. I’m glad she’s ok after everything they did to her.
These girls already felt insecure going into this photoshoot - and then to have the judges (Especially Janice) almost recoil in disgust to the majority of them when their untouched photos were revealed? Absolutely disgusting behaviour. This challenge would only further implement unachieveable beauty standards
@@jasonvargas7564 this season was filmed 17 years ago and people have been extremely bored during lockdown so Tyra has already been dragged and cAnCeLlEd on Twitter
Seriously. I felt so bad for her in the episode where she was looking at herself in the mirror to practice and couldn’t stop crying because she felt so ugly. Janice especially was brutal. They keep talking about taking the critism and applying but how do you take someone saying your before and after look like an Alfred Hitchcock film and laugh?
They really did her dirty though!!! I think she had much better photos and they would always purposefully pick worse ones to break her confidence... Tyra is such a loathsome human being for those types of stunts. Even notice @5:39 how great a lot of her photos are... That one the show froze on was 10 times better than the one they chose as her "best"...
I wish they did a photoshoot where they centred around their ‘flaws.’ Like acne or dark circles. I think they would feel more comfortable in their own body too!
I know that it's pretty painful I kinda honestly feel it too, but this "reality show" judges just focuses on slight imperfections and make a big deal out of it. Just take it as a grain of salt.
I literally don’t understand their criticism on Yaya’s skin. She has no hyperpigmentation, just mild texture- she’s freaking GLOWING. I’ve never seen such an out of touch and insufferable group of ppl in one room.
This judge is making fun and provocating that girl for no reason. I mean Hitchcock movie, really? Then the girl responds very kindly and gets bullied for doing so. I would say them to piss off. I wouldn’t let myself to be bullied like that, even if that would be my biggest dream.
One of the worst things about this episode to me is that we actually get to see how much they lighten up the darker models' skin. Yaya is one of my all time favorites, she's such a gorgeous woman and her retouched photo is like 3 tones lighter than she is in real life and it's such a shame
To me it just looked like they made it brighter, not lighter. There was more shine to it in the places where the light was shining and the skin was smoother. They also made a comment on how she needed to drink more water. Drinking a lot of water improves the skin and makes it look brighter.
Listening to your commentary has healed old wounds I didn’t even know existed. For real… I grew up watch ANTM and always wanted to grow up to be a model. It’s so refreshing hearing you stick up for these models and calling Tyra and other cast out on some of their absolutely ridiculous treatments to these young girls! 🤗
Let me correct Tyra: you don’t have to wear MORE makeup as a woman of color, you have to wear higher pigmented colors. But there’s no need to cake foundation and concealer and blush on a naturally pretty even toned face.
I don't even know what she means by WOC need more makeup. Like, what would that do? She says darker skin tones absorb the light not reflect it. So, is she saying she needs lighter skin? Tyra is aweful
@@bonniegomez5333 She probably is jealous. I definitely wouldn't be surprised. I always believed that Paulina lady to be jealous of one model named Celia. I don't remember the season, but Celia was 24 and being called the young Paulina. She had been winning challenges several weeks in a row, and in the middle of a shooting, Paulina interrupted to bring Celia to the side and tell her that she was too old to start modeling. When Celia went back to finish her shoot, she had trouble and did poorly!
This. You should see the amount of makeup white people (men and women) need to wear any time they go on TV or perform on stage. Without it we look like ghosts.
I will never get over on how they made Kelle so self conscious about herself that she CRIED when looking at herself in the mirror. Especially since Kelle is GORGEOUS
She was one of the prettiest girls in this season and they made her feel so insecure-she actually was a good model and she really wanted to try so hard. I really felt for her.
It was like they targeted her until they eliminated her. Her and Tocara, because if I remember they always made Tocara be the large animal in the photo shoots and they made her be gluttony in another one but she was also gorgeous.
This is INSANE. The judges literally cannot handle someone questioning them. Tyra and her posse created this show so they could have their egos boosted. They needed someone to want their validation as much as they’ve strived for it in their careers. Tyra’s opinions are completely unwarranted. This is a game for them. This is Tyra’s game. It’s not about the models, it’s not about their careers or helping them. This is “the most dangerous game:” let me invite you to my private island and you feel special and in exchange you let me hunt you for fun.
Also, Jess, I hope you read this: It was extremely brave of you to actually include the pictures & videos of your acne especially considering how insecure i'm sure you felt, instead of just SAYING it happened. You took the leap and endured the vulnerability of showing it just to make your viewers who also may have had bad acne feel a lot less alone and more related to you. That was so real and raw and I am so proud of you. 💙
hi, not a negative comment or anything, but we should stop calling people brave or anything of the sort for showing themselves, as we wouldn't call perfect (by societies standards) looking people brave for showing themselves either, i don't remember wether jess actually said she was insecure but if she did then a compliment wouldn't be wrong (in case anyone reads these comments)
@@amira4465 She implied that she wouldn't be comfortable doing a barefaced photoshoot, but yet she showed us her acne struggle. It was brave and nice of her to let us see an insecurity and to let other people with cystic acne know that they're not alone. I have a few spots of cystic acne. :)

Tyra's self-hatred of her own Blackness in this era was heavily projected on to Black contestants on the show. When she says to Yaya "I didn't know you could look so soft", it implicates the stereotype of Black women being rough around the edges, and too rugged to fit into the Eurocentric beauty standard. Also, when she tells Kelle that as a darker skinned woman she needs to wear more make-up because "our skin does not reflect light," was such BS. Kelle's shots in the photoshoot were stunning and the soft lighting played very well onher skin tone.Tyra was honestly one of the worst role models for Black women and girls in the mid-2000s, despite her obvious commercial success.
This is why I prefer Naomi Campbell because unlike tyra. She actually made black women feel confident and beautiful. Trya did the opposite. Her comments are actually disgusting.
I agree. Tyra’s comment about dark-skinned people having to wear more makeup is an example of colorism. It’s such a shame and sad. The judges on this show are absolutely horrid!
Why is it the ultimate betrayal to Tyra for the girls to want to do something else other than dedicate their life to modelling? It would be so inspiring to hear their hopes and aspirations and should be celebrated on the show
Considering Tyra was also a show host and had her own MLM 😂 hypocrisy at its finest. I bet she wouldn’t say that to Cara Delevingne or Hollywood starts’ kids 🤦🏼♀️
If I remember correctly, there were at least 2 other seasons where Tyra would do an episode dedicated to the careers the girls wanted after modeling. She would lecture them about how it was important to have a future plan because modeling was a short-term career in your 20s, and also make it an excuse to attention-whore her talk show or “music” career or whatever else she was playing at.
Tyra explains several times that there are other girls who dreamed to be in place of girls who weren’t there 100 percent. She was validated in what you call a “betrayal”.
I really appreciated you sharing your own experience with cystic acne. As someone who also struggled for years hopefully more people can understand and normalize having acne because I had it due to changes in hormones and no matter what I did it didn’t go away and people didn’t understand that it was just my face and it wasn’t gonna change 🙌
Yes that was so open and honest. I had a very difficult time as well in high school. I know it was stress because my parents had just split up and my skin broke out in a way I had never dealt with before. People would make comments especially family. I also appreciate that she showed us something real because we all go through these trying times and it affects how we feel but there is beauty in the struggle.
acne is NOT you It is NOT normal to suffer but it is a normal REACTION to suffering I had cystic acne that came out in my late twenties because of drastic hormone changes caused by horrible traumas It got better instantly as soon as my life conditions improved Bad things are NEVER you, it is an effect from the outside caused by either bad environment or by the effect of a bad person
Damn they literally kicked her out just because being a model wasnt he first on her list, honestly being independent and having your own business is far more empowering than just being a model. Very strong, have to agree good exit.
Good on her for not settling for what will most likely just be some limiting modelling career. I hope she is successful in manufacturing and hopefully supporting better modelling practices, now that she's gotten a glimpse into how toxic the industry can be.
@@blossomscene they seem to do that a lot. These “criticisms” seem to come from envy and insecurity they didn’t think of it first. Tiffany was abused for her gap tooth and then in later seasons they literally created a gap inbetween a models front two teeth🙄
Sadly she valued profit and ratings more than making a change in the modeling industry, which she could've done. At this time she was the most popular model, TV was huge back then, and Tyra could've changed those standards, having done that she'd have been considered a pioneer in promoting positive changes in fashion unrealistic standards But she didn't, and now she faces backlash literally everywhere, she's not respected in the fashion industry and people don't want to see her in TV any more. That's her karma, she preferred profit (short term) over doing something significant (longterm) that would have improved the careers of many upcoming models.
Insecure people shouldn't be in an industry at judges you on your beauty, and they definitely shouldn't be on a reality TV show judges you on your beauty. If you're insecure somethings just aren't for you.
@@theshadowfax239 You are right but I also think the modelling industry in general needs to reevaluate it’s principals, or just cease to exist, it’s pointless anyway.
@@dynamopirate470 I thought the exact same thing. There was a season where the girl was an absolute doll ( and tallented, she was already modelling before the show ). And Tyra just invented some bull**** theory to make her lose the chalenge, like, "you didn´t obey to lens", something 'creative' like that. I was actually angry, because of the hipocrisy.
When Nigel said the “cure” was “water water water”, I had to pause and walk away for a minute. Having struggled with acne for 34 STRAIGHT years this was so triggering, heartless, and completely ignorant. Ranks right up there with the person who told me that I had such bad acne because I ate pizza. …, right
I hear ya sister! I have severe acne at 42, on my face chest, back and arms, and the only thing that has helped me is birth control pills; but not everyone can or wants to take it. Even then, my skin still breaks out a little, not as bad though thankfully. I have been on a lot of treatments from the dermatologist but I also have allergies and other issues so it’s complicated. I actually am mostly raw and plant-based, exercise, meditate, get outside everyday, take supplements, use natural products, drink lots of water and still struggle with bad skin, irritable bowel and bipolar anxiety and depression. My husband eats pizza and french fries, never drinks water, no depression, and never breaks out. Water can help some people with bad diets, but its more than that. There can be hormonal issues, or like me acne can be hereditary. Anyway, everybody has a struggle, I get my clear skin from a bottle of foundation and keep it moving.
@@heyalexiajanee it's your hormones. Talk to your doctor to see if you have PCOS. It can cause your hormones to go crazy and birth control usually helps. I have it. But honestly. Just keep your skin dry. And understand it might never go away until you have menopause.

Ok but the woman that said it “looked like a Hitchcock film” is so unprofessional. She was literally making fun of her. That is not how you act in life or on television. This show really should never have existed
It took me until I was 25 to realize how toxic this show & “judges” were. Shame on Tyra & the rest of these grown adults for how they were to these impressionable girls. I cannot imagine the trauma & unlearning these girls had to go through once they got home. I hope that they were unable to learn that physical beauty is the most important thing & to look for validation from others. I am still trying to unlearn these things & I was just a viewer of the show. Truly a toxic show & atmosphere to be around. Really wish all these people would take responsibility on their bullying & negativity. I really appreciate your videos & how you are helping girls to realize this isn’t how they should be treated or judged. You are a true role model. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Agree with you so much. The show is toxic, the judges are awful to the girls and Tyra is a toxic, fake person. I didn’t see it when I was younger watching it, but watched some when I got older and I could see right through her. After hearing stories from some of the women on that show confirming how awful the experience was for them, I can’t stand Tyra.
Not sure if she's just acting for the show or these were the standards she grew up with while she was still modelling. Pretty sure she had her fair share of critical judgements in her heydays of modelling. Depends on how you look at it, it could be that she's just prepping these younger women for the harsh realities of the modelling world or she's really just this type of person. I'm hoping it's the former. But its true that in an industry where looks is everything, if you have imperfections in your appearance, either you are going to try improving on your imperfections or you can switch to a career where your success doesnt have to depend on your looks. But if she's really just a shallow person overall she would have been replaced as a judge few seasons ago. This is just my 2 cents.
I watched some, thought it was fun at first, but after a lot of time seeing clips and interviews, this show really is toxic AF I mean they made a girl strip naked even though she was uncomfortable, another had to do a photoshoot about drug overdose AFTER learning her closest friend had died of a drug overdose through phone call, then giving them makeovers that most of the time are terrible.
Also 25 and same. As a kid, I was unable to see the narcissism. I binged this and her talk show and I feel like I could’ve done something better with my young mind. It’s no question why some girls come out the show disliking Tyra.
Now I know why Naomi Campbell couldn't stand Tyra Banks. "We're gonna judge how bad your skin is, because our clients do not wish to pay too much for retouching your photos." As if the models actually could make their skin look better at the snap of their fingers. Downright terrible.
Naomi didn’t care for Tyra because the industry made it seem like Tyra was the new young Naomi. Tyra isn’t perfect but neither is Naomi she threw a phone at her assistant. Both are narcissistic
The hypocrisy.. They tell the girls to have confidence, yet when someone says “I’m this beautiful person” oh no get them out of there. Can’t have that level of confidence here
It’s so scary how abusive this show is! Kelle has such beautiful skin. I can’t believe they kept switching back and forth from the retouched photo and the unretouched photo. Poor girl! I can’t believe they attacked her confidence like that! Their behavior is disgusting!
@Jena F and yet she still looked amazing. I’m going to press X to doubt the whole you need to wear more makeup because of the darker skin thing entierly.
@@MissCaraMint seriously, she looked fantastic. Make up and no makeup. All of the women are so gorgeous. I hate how the show tears them down to have little to no confidence. It's heartbreaking.

@@ajsmiley1311 I thought the same thing, it also wouldn't be the first for the show. They love to throw racial motivated anything in to make the girls feel lesser than. "You're to dark." “Our skin absorbs light”.. we’re not fabric?! Like does she not know that skin doesn’t work the same way as for example a black vs. white t-shirt??? Black women are literally glowing. What a dangerous stigma for Tyra to be sending out on Primetime television.
The way they treat these models is just sick. Acting like their natural skin is shocking and disgusting? Literally recoiling and pretending they 'can't look'? Every person on this panel should be ashamed of themselves for trying to make young women think that the way they exist naturally is disturbing. Just wrong. Also, as a person who had cystic acne for around a year and have next to no photos of myself from that time because of it, I just want to commend you for how brave you were to share your story and videos. It can be so demoralizing, but there is nothing wrong with having it!
Seriously!! This could've been a good message, where they judge all the photos and they're all great and no one gets eliminated because natural beauty is different but still beautiful. THAT would've been the way to go about this. But it's Tyra, so of course it's demeaning and toxic
@@lenabeans I think it’s a window into what the modelling industry was like then (and maybe still is; I don’t pay attention to it). Tyra lacked the imagination and backbone to challenge it.
@@julierose2398 The thing is though ANTM focuses on looks more than modeling vs Australia's Bext Top Model which was mor about modeling. Modeling is more about fit. Tyra was just doing the most for ratings. I mean it was on UPN/CW vs Fox or CBS
I mean, you don’t blurt that kind of thing out in any job interview. When you’re up against a dozen people who’ll stick around longer (and therefore be a better return on the employer’s investment), saying that kind of thing gives the employer a reason to eliminate you from the running.
To be an intelligent, and have a future over 30 if your lucky. You tell the models to be confident in the photo shoot, but god forbid feeling good about yourself. That is exactly why you had a young girl with bulimia.
As someone who struggles with disordered eating this is a huge nightmare, I dont blame Amanda for telling, but she shouldve told a producer only not the other models and the producers shouldve gotten Cassie therapy and helped her through this. Turning it into the topic dujour and a gossip-y thing is so messed up
Absolutely! The damage this whole incident would have done, it just cemented her ed and made her defensive. I have a feeling Amanda probably did and the producer thought "ooh story line, go tell the others". Nothing would surprise me with this show, especially as no one appeared to step in to help her at the time and instead watched it all unfold. Nobody thought to intervene or edit it out, just let it go live. Sorry you struggle too, it does get better 🥰 5 years and still going x
Yeah, it was a mess. I definitely agree with not totally blaming amanda, from what I saw I really think she and most of the other models were genuinely worried. They definitely turned it into gossip, which isn't right, but I can't get mad at them when it seems they had good intentions. I'm just disappointed in the people filming the conversation, not editing out, turning it into drama, etc.
Amanda to producers: Cassie told me she has bulimia. I think she needs help. Nigel at elimination: So Cassie, we heard you have an eating disorder... Try drinking more water!
I wish someone like you would’ve made videos like this when I was a teenager. This show was THE standard of beauty for my 14 year old, impressionable self. When the judges would rip into these gorgeous models, I felt so ugly, fat, and disgusting because if those women were ugly, fat, and disgusting, then there was no way I should have any confidence at all. I’m so, so glad I found your channel. It’s cathartic watching these videos. 💙
This might be the worst episode ever. The judges are just awful and rotten people. Watching them belittle and ridicule these beautiful women for their natural (and AMAZING!!) skin makes me sick to my stomach. They should be ashamed of themselves.
I think this season was one of the worst seasons. There was also an episode where a model complained of sexual harassment but nothing was done…. and she was forced to hang out with those modes after the shoot.
Don’t get me wrong. I am always for women doing whatever they want but why are these beautiful women being critiqued by women filled with plastic and people that can afford thousands of dollars worth of skincare
My thoughts exactly. Especially Janice who is practically fake in almost every square inch of her body with all the plastic surgeries she’s undergone. She wishes she could be as pretty as those girls.
Janice Dickinson was truly gorgeous, stunning as a young lady and I think now she's envious of women who are still young. I wonder what she would have looked like if she took good care of herself and aged naturally. We'll never know.
Well more than half of that models are more relatable than all that judges combined, especially the way the male judges dressed lmao... And then there's Tyra with that hair 😂
It is sad that we live in a society where we women are terrified to leave the house without makeup. We are conditioned to believe everyone will harshly look down on us, not want us and we cannot be confident. That everyone believes our natural skin is somehow intrinsically wrong. Shows like this only reinforce this toxic social conditioning. Not everyone is judging, a fact which took a long time for me to accept. Make up should be about self expression and fun
@@gaboltl since when males get punished by society for not wearing pink lipstick, clogging their pores with foundation & etc?? Since when males gets gifted makeup on their 8th birthday?? Since when males are expected to spend their money on makeup & makeup removal products or they be deemed unprofessional/unstable?? Like stfu
I assume you're referring to people who don't have chronic severe acne. When you have cystic acne and go out without makeup you have to deal with constant reactions of shock, discust and people asking you what's wrong with your face. It's humiliating, and thus people like us really have no choice but to wear makeup to cover it up unless we want to be treated like a circus sideshow.
I stopped caring about whether I had makeup on or not. I had and still have HORRIBLE acne and flares bad depending on "time of the month" lol. I just accept it's me and that's okay
People wouldn’t be scared to take off their makeup if people like those judges didn’t exist. Society complains when people use makeup because they’re “fake” and aren’t showing their real skin while when someone has skin imperfections they encourage them to hide them and be ashamed of them Also, I kinda liked the start of the episode! The photographers were encouraging the models, everyone seemed to be so confident and happy Aaaaand then it went downhill
@@lesleymbuyikayembe7553 They said people LIKE those judges, not those judges. Even if they don't watch the show, they can still be criticized by OTHER people LIKE those judges.
Didn't they break down Kelle to the point where she would look in the mirror and start crying, because she hated how she looked? Confidence is something that is never allowed on ANTM. Whenever someone shows a bit of confidence, Tyra and the crew try their best to break them and it looked bad back then and worse now. Tyra is a grown woman and she's bullying kids who want to make it into the business.
Omg yes! Also how is feeling beautiful being arrogant? Like that judge said that the girls should let others decide if they're beautiful or not and it's the worst thing you could possibly say to anyone, worst if they have a low self esteem. I'm glad I didn't see this show as a young teen
Precisely why Tyra couldn't stand Eugena. She had the nerve to be a boisterousley confident dark skinned black woman. Apparently, Tyra felt some kind of way about any girl that reminded her of Naomi Campbell.
Jessica I love you, as someone struggling with a skin condition that is permanent due to a genetic disorder, I can relate to the constant comments made about our faces, I hope you know that you're beautiful and your skin isn't the only thing that makes you beautiful. Please don't let anyone else ever make you question yourself, or prevent you from going out and enjoying yourself, you deserve the world! You look much happier now and that makes me happy to see =)
The fact that you showed your bare face to the world in the video speaks volumes. I’ve never had anyone comment about my acne to my face but I can imagine how damaging that is. Your skin looks like it’s doing better. I’ve struggled with cystic acne throughout my life and I know how painful it is so I hope it’s doing better and you’re feeling just as beautiful as you look! ❤️
Judges: "You need to speak up, be confident and assert that you did a good job despite your shortcomings. Make us believe in you." *girl does these things* Judges: "You're blaming everything on the photographer/lighting/makeup and not taking responsibility for yourself and your shortcomings." I've noticed this trap as I've watched this show as an adult. It's a no-win situation for these girls. If they point out the positive in their performance despite criticisms, they're being "arrogant and not taking responsibility for themselves." If they blame themselves for the criticisms, they're "lacking confidence and are uncomfortable in their own skin." lol it's so American (and I say this as an American) to have these polar opposites portrayed on TV as the only possible options. An offshoot of this is how the girls are told to tolerate every obstacle/uncomfortable aspect of a photoshoot--from freezing cold water to sexual harassment, or they're being a "complainer who lacks personal responsibility" if they speak up. But if they speak up after the photoshoot, Tyra is like "Why didn't you speak up during the photoshoot?! It hindered your performance and didn't have to!" 🤦♀
They also are told to tolerate racism as well. In a later season a model was paired with a male model that said he didn't like black girls. And Tyra knew it, mentioned it, and still brushed it off.
My daughter suffered with cystic acne and I felt so bad for her as we tried to find a solution. A dermatologist actually told her to not wear makeup, it was clogging her pores, he said. I told him "She doesn't wear makeup on her back or her scalp, how do you explain that?" He told her to stop drinking skim milk. He was such a jerk and it was such a waste of time. Our family doctor finally convinced to try mild form of Accutane. It was amazing how well it worked. There was a huge improvement. After the first course, she needed to go back on again, but only for a short while. Years later, her skin looks great and she takes very good care with her skin regiment and I'm so happy for her. It sucks how people make all these judgements, drink more water....Puheease!
my dermatologist said similarly silly things, he suggested that i stop eating peanut butter and drinking dairy. i didn’t ever stop doing either of those things of course, and 14 years later at 30 my skin is under control. turns out i just had to wait for my hormones to change naturally with age lol. i also tried accutane, proactiv, microdermabrasion, laser treatments, EVERYTHING. nothing worked but time
Accutane is actually relatively dangerous. We would monitor our patients every 3 months via labs. It's shocking that a PCP would take on cystic acne with accutane. It's not really a one size fits all skin condition either. Everyone is different, everyone's body reacts differently to hormones, foods, etc etc - A dermatologist can't magically rid you of cystic acne after one visit. Wearing make up DOES clog pores and irritate skin. So, if you already have a preexisting skin condition (cystic acne), applying make up will only irritate or exacerbate that condition. They were correct to advise against it. As far as peanut butter and milk goes - sugars, fats, dairy products etc can also cause acne outbreaks. So perhaps that was the thought process behind that. Moral to my story is, doctors are not miracle workers - especially when you're non-compliant or combative with their advice. It might seem trivial or ridiculous but the advice they are giving you has purpose in a trial and error rule out system to determine causes and treatment for your conditions. Have some faith ❤ Glad both your issues ultimately ended up resolved.
@@vexu7366 thank you for this more neutral response. one size does not fit all in medicine, and dairy can be absolutely awful for some people, like everyone in my family who has various bad reactions from it. also i think it’s great these doctors recommended a more “natural” solution first. i think if you can take control over something through diet, that’s much preferable to a harsh drug like accutane.
@@vexu7366 yup i was on accutane for a while as well and it didn’t do anything for my skin. i had to get monthly blood tests to make sure there was no liver damage and before i could start it, i had to read a huge manual and sign a waiver form. not worth it lol
Their horrified reaction on some of natural unretouched photos is absolutely disgusting. No human being have smooth not textured skin. It's so no okay to make just seeing pores and a bit of the undereye skin being a different shade as such a big problem. I hate how they blamed the girls about their skin, since not everyone born with good skin. Some are difficult that is hard to work with. and no amount of good diet, water, sleep and cleaning habits can transform it compile
@@trekadouble757 but there are many types of models. Not every model going to have their naked faces photographed like this. Being judged on your skin when nothing is wrong but they make it seem like it's horrible, is just not it
@@trekadouble757 I was thinking the same. If you are offended easily, modelling or whole entertainment business is not your place. It is all about looks. Don't join it if you are struggling.
Didn't they literally make a girl tak off her make-up at a panel... And now they are complaining that they don't have enough make-up on... In the episode based around being bare-face? They are so incredibly petty and plain out bullies.
One of my best friends suffers from SEVERE cystic acne. It is incredibly painful for her, physically and emotionally. I appreciate you talking about your experience because I know it helps people like her not feel so alone in their struggle. Also, despite any acne, you were (and are) KILLING it!!! Appreciate you! ❤
I wanted to thank you for being so open and honest about your own skin issues and how you dealt with it. I was born with Ectodermal Dysplasia which affects the pigment of my skin as well as my hair, teeth, and severe lack of sweat glands. I was teased relentlessly growing up, but it also helped me become stronger - but that doesn't mean that the bullying was acceptable or warranted. I've been watching a lot of your videos on ANTM lately, but this one literally got me teary eyed when you shared some of your personal pain you've dealt with - it shows that you are beautiful inside AND out! Many blessings and thanks again for sharing!
This photoshoot infuriates me. Every single one of these pictures was stunning and the producers' "criticism" made no sense. As someone who struggled with an eating disorder, the way this show treated the model with disordered eating was horrendous. It would've made me spiral. I don't like that everyone was told.
thats the thing. there was NO criticism, much less constructive. They were just going ughh and blegh to the unretouched photos. They weren't trying to build these girls up, only break them down to manipulate them
I really wished Kelle would have repeated “It looks like a Hitchcock film.” and asked how that was constructive criticism or how she was supposed to take that as criticism and work off of that to “improve herself”.
Ah yes, America's next bullying victim. Honestly they should have one opportunity where the judges need to do a challenge and the models get to comment on their pictures anonymously. Is it stooping to their level? Sure. Do they deserve it? They sure do.
hey Jessica I know this is a video from a few weeks ago, and I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it already, but you are so incredibly brave in opening up about your experience with cystic acne. while I never experience it first hand, I was talking to my fiancee about it yesterday and how many people talk about how incredibly painful and uncomfortable it can be. I never would have known because your skin has always looked flawless from what I've seen in your videos! you're an incredibly sweet, gentle soul, and I'm so glad that you continue to make videos like this. ❤
So sad that they judged them so harshly with their bare skin. There are so many things that can go wrong with your skin that can make you insecure. I’ve suffered with eczema my whole life, which was particularly bad when I was a kid. My skin would always be red, peeling, and split open with wide bleeding fissures. It was so bad on my hands that I couldn’t bend my knuckles. And I would always try to hide my hands under long sleeves by pulling them down. Plus it feels like your skin is on fire and incredibly itchy, and sometimes you just can’t help scratch and scratch until it hurts so much you can’t bear to scratch any more, even though it still itches like crazy. It’s taken years and years to get it to be under better control, plus lots of money invested in trial and error of products, medicated creams, etc. sometimes people just need to learn to be quiet rather than give useless advice like “drink water.” My niece has it as well, and people would always comment about it when she went out to her parents or me or whatever adult was there. And she’s not dumb, she could hear and it bothered her. No one wants the things you’re uncomfortable with to be the thing people always notice about you and comment on first. One time when she was 4 I told her how pretty she looked because we had gotten dressed up to go out, and she turns to me and frowns and says “I’m not pretty! I have eczema.” Absolutely heartbreaking, and if other people had just minded their own business, and not always commented, then she never would have felt that way about herself.
Janice Dickinson is the WORST. She is so critical...so condescending....she has no filter and not in a "brutally honest" way. She's like a mean girl from high school.
It’s disgusting how these girls were treated just for having skin flaws. I have eczema too (hands and feet) so I’ve gotten a lot of comments as well, or people asking if I’m contagious. I’m the beginning is was so annoying but now I don’t hide it and I’m very open about it. Still haven’t found a cream that works yet of course. Hope you and your niece find some peace in having eczema and do the best you can. It runs in my family too and my boyfriend has it as well.
This!! I have had psoriasis for about 5 years, luckily not very badly, just on my elbows and small patches elsewhere, and yet still I get comments SO often, even from family members. Comments are often "are you okay? that must hurt" (because the patches can get very red) or "you should try E45, it worked great for my dry skin"... I have scales, not dry skin! I got these so often especially a few years ago when my elbows were really bad and contact with any liquid (even water) was agony and would make my elbows lock in place. Aside from this, I get the grossed out comments/looks too. I can't understand why anyone would judge something on a person that is temporary - same with pimples. They go away, and they're uncontrollable! So what basis is there to judge on?!
I also have eczema and its never easy. It takes a lot of work, given that there are a lot of things that factor into how your skin reacts. Dealing with a skin condition as far as I'm makes you absolutely beautiful and anyone that says otherwise is just being hateful and insecure.
“Retouching is extremely expensive” Yeah Tyra? So is skincare. I’ve been through so many different brands and products and medications trying to find something that works for my skin and acne. It’s piled on a decent amount of money. I can’t imagine someone with a lower income family being expected to pay that much just to meet society’s expectations. Plus with today’s beauty standards coming pretty much exclusively from plastic surgery, beauty is becoming less about genetics and more about money.
What's worse than everything you just said is how more often than not, it's just a matter of taking in our cutting back on a specific vitamin. Of course there's special circumstances and whatnot but it's crazy how herbal and holistic health is secondary to the synthetic and man-made medicine. All in the name of money and control. They don't just want our money. They want control and for us to doubt ourselves in every aspect! Emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually! So much so we take physical medicine for spiritual problems. I could get really deep when it comes to this stuff so imma stop myself now. God bless you on your skincare journey and any other journey or endeavor you're pursuing right now! Prayers for HEALING POWER in everything and every way possible!
I think it's funny how Amanda tried to villianize Eva this whole season for being to herself and comfortable in her own skin. Made her seem like a bully but she literally took Cassie's secret and spread it around to all the girls to gossip. While Eva was the only one who thought she was wrong. Ok...
@@visualbeauty3427 you didn't watch the video? Cassie told Amanda she's bulimic and Amanda told about it to someone else and so forth until everyone knew. Amanda defended herself saying Cassie shouldn't have told her about it if she didn't want everyone else to know it as well. Also later in the season Amanda does accuse Eva of stealing her jewerly and doesn't apologise (at least not shown) after finding out she had put the jewerly away so no one would steal it!
@@missvida6251 lol no doubt miss vida, but I'm still gonna maintain that her behavior is of a cokehead nature. Perhaps she's sober from the cocaine now, using pain killers only, and that's just her personailty. Lol how unfortunate for her. And those she comes in contact with.
This is actually disgusting! The shows approach to bulimia is deeply upsetting. I've not seen the season but knowing the show, I assume they eliminated her and didn't offer any support. In addition, Jessica, your story about acne was touching and I've suffered with it for years. I had a similar situation in which a teacher asked me what was wrong with my face.
where are people's heads? why would you ever go up to someone and say gee what's wrong with your face? that's just unbelievable to me. not only is it rude and hurtful it just shows that the person asking the question has no common sense or couth or tact.
I’ve been rewatching the show, it’s terrible, but Tyra heard about the situation and brought someone in. Can’t remember if it was like a psychologist or a nutritionist or something to talk to her about healthier ways to be skinny if thats what she truly wanted and this girl basically said there wasn’t anything wrong with her and she didnt need help. I think she did go home because Tyra didn’t want to condone that on the show.
I used to be that person who thinks good skin is just about drinking water and not touching your face. I would even say this to my sister, until I got hormonal acne. I regret giving her that "advice" so much, I apologized to her and told her how I learned the hard way. This show is just awful. The judges are wearing a ton of makeup and judging the models's skin like it's their choice to have texture, which is, by the way, just human.
One of my best friends struggled with acne when we were growing up. I’ve always had very clear skin all over (never had any kind of acne anywhere). Her mom refused to take her to a dermatologist and used to tell her (in front of me, so I heard it for myself) that she just “needed to eat better and drink more water like Carolina. Look how beautiful her skin is.” Oh, and she needed to stop wearing so much makeup and wash her face more. Meanwhile, I have bulimia and was regularly binging and purging (mostly on junk food and soda) and I didn’t wear any kind of makeup because I straight up didn’t feel any kind self esteem to do that for myself (I felt so ugly, it didn’t matter kind of thinking). I didn’t start drinking water until my 20’s so none of that was true. When we were adults, she finally went to a dermatologist herself with her own insurance and found out she had legit acne and needed medication. I just have really good genes.
I’m constantly dehydrated and never ever ever get pimples, never washed my face besides in the shower. Like people give the worse advice, my heart breaks for people who have issues with acne or texture. Hugs to you guys, as a person with chronic illness and disability I feel you guys with people telling dumb advice
Same. I sometimes drinks lots of water other times I forget. I eat lots of sweets and often do the crime of not taking off my make up before bed. People compliment my skin. Water helps already healthy skin, but it's not a cure.
Ummm…asking for a friend, but are you supposed to wash your face other than when you’re in the shower?…. Again, totally for a friend. I’d, uh, definitely never think that’s the only time you’re supposed to wash your face…
Dude, I’m someone who also has a chronic illness but has never dealt with acne in any realm! I’ve also struggled with an eating disorder so I have not always eaten the best or drank water and never really had more then a couple of pimples at one time. But I get so much unsolicited, frustrating advice for how to deal with my autoimmune disorder and just in general, we should all just stop assuming for others. Hope you’re doing ok with your illness.
This one was actually the most triggering and disturbing for me personally. They brush past the topic of eds like it was gossip with no resources to help the person struggling, make them bare faced to the camera and then critique them brutally on who they are. It hurts so much to watch this.
This is the cycle with most issues: Cassie's bulimic issues, Tocarra's being a plus sized model, Yaya's "african-ness", Nicole's on having no personality, Eva the diva, Ann's "inconsistent" performance all throughout, Kelle's look and how she portrays it in the photoshoots *totally gaslighting her, and Julie's wanting to pursue another field
Oh think the only real outrage with Julie wanting to do something else is she took someone’s spot that really wanted to do this vs someone who didn’t and didn’t really take is seriously
They really did Kelle so bogus. Legit played mind games with her. I remember seeing clips of Kelle practicing her poses in the mirror and she would just break down crying. That deer in the headlights comment really broke her. I felt so terrible for her.
Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if the judges just randomly picked names out of a hat to decide who goes home each week! 'OK, who's getting bullied this week? Kelle? OK! Make her feel terrible this week!'
the judges: "you need to be more confident about yourself!" Also the judges: "we don't like when you say you are this beautiful person. You need o let US validate it first"
I never realized just how damaging this was for me as a kid to watch. Not just the body image issues, as a kid who didnt understand thats not how people treat each other, these ppl are not friends.
The whole "let other people tell you you're beautiful" thing is gross. My sister said this to me as a kid and since then no one has ever called me pretty unless they felt like they had to compliment me back after a compliment or compared themselves to me and I always told them that it was unnecessary to do that because everyone is uniquely beautiful and comparing doesn't help anyone. -- Anyway telling someone they shouldn't compliment themselves can do lots of damage -- as above since my sister told me that and that it was conceited to call myself pretty it told me that I wasn't. I say if someone wants to appreciate themselves they should be able to without issue as long as they aren't putting others down to do so. The whole comparing photos and comments just really irritated me -- they were so unnecessarily rude. None of it was constructive criticism, most of the time they just insulted them and expected them to be grateful? Seriously zero point to it.
You always have to be your own cheerleader! Always! Always talk to yourself kindly and treat yourself with love. That’s the best way to do it, it’s not being conceited, it’s self love.
@@pankakesnotstellar Disagree 🤷🏾♀️ you think the successful people out here are not their own cheerleaders? Think they don’t have great self talk to get through hard times? Aren’t their own cheerleader so they can progress? And telling yourself you’re beautiful is not vanity. Vanity is thinking you’re the most beautiful.
@@pankakesnotstellar imagine 😭😂 “omg she’s supporting herself mentally and has good self talk, the vanity and conceitedness of her to know her worth and love herself”
Completely agree. Self-esteem and self-worth based solely on external validation is horrible and makes you a target for narcissists and manipulation. The criticism in this video was not at all useful for the models, or anyone else watching for that matter.
i love you oml THANK YOU for talking about acne like i’ve never heard before. i needed to hear that out loud from anyyyyone, seriously glad you are open about it
So, Kelle isn't allowed to feel beautiful or say someone else finds her beautiful but Amanda is allowed to say she's stunning? They're both gorgeous but why is one allowed to say it and the other isn't?
Amanda's white and Kelle isn't...we all know that women should hate themselves but women who aren't white with European features should ESPECIALLY hate themselves...
They have always hated dark eyes and non perfect skin. They are incredibly awful mentors who think being more toxic than in the modeling world is exactly what these new models need. These girls reviews, they were all professional and just honestly great in their judging and the judges were just utter garbage humans who don’t honestly deserve to be judges. None of them. I’ve seen Cara Delevingne and Gigi Hadid mentor and judge models better and they are fairly new to the industry compared to those judges.
I don't know why, but I recently got one of your clips suggested to me on TH-cam. I wasn't that interested, since I never was into ANTM. But I watched it, and I was blown away by your way of showing how media, and reality shows, manipulate both the viewers and the participants. Your knowledge as a photografer is also very interesting. I have spent an entire week on your channel. Thank you so much for being such an honest, compassionate and sweet person. My best wishes to you.
I could never let someone talk to me like this. If that Botox filled, plastic surgery battered woman tried to talk to me like that I would literally let her know that at least when people tell me that I'm beautiful they're complimenting what I'm born with and I don't have to buy my beauty by the syringe.
I might be mixing up my seasons but I think I remember Yaya was having really bad outbreaks because they were sequestered and unable to go buy their own make up and the make up and beauty products they had weren't suitable for her. A number of the girls had asked to run to a black beauty supply store and were refused.
I remember Ebony from season 1mentioned this in an interview with Oliver. They could have done the same tactics throughout the series though to break down the contestants’ confidence.
I can believe that. It's just like hair. Back then, it was hard to find products that worked for black skin and hair. When you did, you didn't deviate from them.
All photos are retouched. It is ridiculous that they try to pretend like retouching is something companies try not to do. Retouching is the way it is not a last resort.
Honestly looking back I cannot believe I watched this show, and that my mom let me at the young impressionable age that I was. This is heartbreaking. They are literally bullies like one starts with a negative comment and they allllllll join in. Disgusting human beings.
It's crazy how little people in general know about 'bad' skin and what causes it. My sister and I came from the same parents but she got the oily skin and I didn't, I watched her try every acne treatment under the sun through her teens, even being on birth control (which was kind of a big deal for a 14 year old in an Uber religious house) NOTHING helped and I figured that would be my fate too but I got off with just a handful of zits and I spent waaaay less time on my personal care. My dissolution with the beauty industry/standards came early as I watched them shatter my older sisters confidence and sense of worth. Because of something she couldn't control no matter how desperately she tried. I don't wear makeup to this day.
I have mix skin but have the baby face going on, I've never had acne or had to wash my face often in the teenage stages nor did I wear make up either. I belive it was after that phase and reaching adulthood in which I suddenly developed cystic acne. It was crazy, I knew nothing about skin care, zero knowledge that washing your face was suppose to be a daily thing. Yes it was hard it felt like just accidentally grazing my skin by a movement would cause a pimple zit to burst. I've tried different products not sure what did what and slowly learned about a day/night routine. Skin products did not cure my acne, vitamins did for me. It all starts from the inside, I firmly believe that. I understand everyone skin genes hereditary is different, it's just educating ourselves what works and what doesnt. Unfortunately no one tells you or talks openly about acne is a natural thing that comes and goes, it will never disappear its learning to control it. This was just so dehumanizing telling the models natural skin is disgusting when I'm pretty sure their goals being a model would have focus and priority in taking care of their skin already and probably already work hard on that.
Tyra : we give you constructive criticism to help your modeling career.. Janice : it looks like Hitchcock film hee haa hee hoo.. Yup constructing their insecurity and mental issues 👍
What's weird is you can see Tyras reaction to Janice. I dont even think she looks bad in unretouched photo. Janice Dickenson gets plastic surgery but is mocking someones natural face is just laughable.
Did he really say “I don’t like when a model thinks she beautiful, let us tell you that.” This show was just straight toxic waste floating through our TVs
Right?? Like what was that?? 😭
I'm glad I never met any toxicity in my modelling, this is like all bad stereotypes ab this industry, as if it was some bad sitcom.
All men think that way. They hate when you think you're attractive. They want all your self esteem to come from them. Not just them but him specifically. Like each guy wants you to rely on his thoughts of you for your self esteem
Yep absolutely disgusting👀😵😡
but in the same breath will say “she needs to find her confidence “ so which is it????
You said it right
I was obsessed with this as a teen and seriously thought there was nothing wrong with it. Looking back now I cant believe how messed up it was
Same here .
SAMEE
Same. To the point to where I would see other people and point out their flaws. I changed that point of view from me when I was 24. I hated doing that and it was for show like this.
I agree. I wanted to be on it..
I watched with my mom, I was around 9/10 back then and my mom thought Tyra was very problematic. I thought she was tripping
I remember reading about some "where are they now" lists and apparently Julie did get her own textile company or something. And like? Good for her?? Love that.
^^fr way she walked out gave me hella girl boss energy
Yeah she like procures, or manufactures textiles and then sells them to companies that make the clothes (probably more money in that honestly) and I’m super happy for her. She could have done that and still modeled, Tyra! Lol
I feel like with a lot of the dark skin models on the show there’s always a trope of being strong or angry and I don’t quite like that.
Admitting that your entire world doesn't revolve around modeling always seems to be the kiss of death for these girls. Without fail, when one of them says that they're interested in other things, within an episode or two, they're eliminated.
I still feel Elyse didn't win season 1 because they didn't like that she was also in medical school. When they found out they had a collective fit.
She was never in medical school.
I forgot how awful Janice was. The audacity of her to tear this girls apart with her thousands of dollars of botched plastic surgery 😩
II wonder how she'd look in a photo with no makeup!
I know right? For someone who wouldn't even look beautiful without any makeup to attack a bunch of girls who definitely do look beautiful without it like that, the nerve.

Just goes to show how toxic the industry is
This is such a terrible expectation to put on someone and it feels like a very old school, ignorant comment.
I can only imagine what my younger self thought when I heard this
Honestly what a rubbish comment that Tyra made
@@tonikay1520 1000% and all for TV 🤮 I hope she’s changed for the better
Y’all forget that she comes from a different era and that this was filmed in the early 2000s. Many Blk women had problematic sentiments, especially those older than her i.e her mother. Let’s not blame her for possibly internalizing anti Blk sentiments in an anti Blk society. Blk women still say shxt like this today even when it comes to “good hair bad hair.” The self righteous rhetoric is almost insufferable 🤦🏾♀️
@@SupernaturalLove100 nah cuz she still does this show and has progressively gotten worse so this factor is a mute point.

It's only relevant if it pertains to her, unfortunately..

I had no idea the solution to better skin is just drinking more water, next Nigel is going to hit us with a "to cure depression, just go outside more"
Just find something funny and laugh :D depression cured, people like that are really frustrating 🙄
These judges and Tyra are so cheesy and phony it's.pathetic.They contradict themselves over and over again.
Yeah, or «just be more positive»
I mean if someone has vitamin D deficiency, it can improve
Go queen!
She is super manipulative very dangerous
"Chef's kiss" is usually used for things that are positive and amazing. I would say her gaslighting is .
I agree! Tyra is not what she used to appear as. Also cystic acne is physically painful and scars easily. So it can be hard to cover. It’s horrible when you get them.
The judges are so abusive. The entire show is like a case study in narcissistic abuse.
I agree
That's Hollywood for you and the beauty industry.
absolutely.. constantly confusing the poor girls with crazy demands & gaslighting them, what a toxic ish of a show😡😡
right! lmao - The gaslighting in insane and for what, reality TV?
exactly!!
She should've responded with "I want to be a supermodel turned business woman like you Tyra." and she probably would've won the whole show lol
It seems more like a ‘let’s push them to their limits until they break and realise they’re not cut out for modelling’ rather than lets nurture and give these aspiring models the tools they need to excel in the industry.
exactly, well said
That's why Naomi Campbell's show is better. She actually cared about the girls.

Top Model is a shitty cruel show!
In that case let's get rid of the whole industry. It was and it is a reflection of the industrie.
Insanity.
That sounds an awful lot like someone was playing the Blame Game 🤔
The fact she came out in the same swimsuit to prove... whatever, who cares... is actually just sad. ANTM is just 2 decades of Tyra violently projecting her insecurities onto younger women.
Oh yes- the “kiss my fat a$$” monologue. She said “on behalf of all the girls who get teased” when she’s tearing down beautiful girls like it doesn’t matter unless it’s her
When you WORK for THE AUTHOR OF CONFUSION....
What episode was that?
I think the difference is that Tyra was at the beach being a normal person not a model....these girls are on a show about being a MODEL! Do you think the fashion world is nice or kind? Tyra was giving the the same energy they would get for the rest of there time in the buisness. It's not for the weak as it's been said by multiple models over the years it's not something for people with thin skins

It's almost comically when 20-year-olds are like, "Gen Z would never allow this." The show was on until 2018. It's crazy what was allowed.
It wasn’t acceptable.
I’ve never been a model, but from what I’ve heard some modeling agencies are toxic and bully models and demean them
@@crazycatlady7866 it wasn't ok, but it was definitely more accepted.
It’s a show entirely about looks and how to make it in the modeling industry. Like, what did you expect? Lol

I liked the show when I was a kid until she made fun of a girl for having a gap between her teeth. It lowered my confidence and the next time I went to the dentist, I asked them for braces.
Yaya is absolutely gorgeous
Agreed. They all hated Kelle's untouched photo because it was a couple of shades darker than the retouched one.
I thought I saw her skin looks darker at the judging than in the photo.
To me it just looked like they made it brighter, not lighter. There was more shine to it in the places where the light was shining and the skin was smoother.
They also made a comment on how she needed to drink more water. Drinking a lot of water improves the skin and makes it look brighter.

YUPPP! tyra never knows what she’s talking about it’s so exhausting

Yaya always looked soft and feminine too which makes her bias much more obvious.

At this time she was the most popular model, TV was huge back then, and Tyra could've changed those standards, having done that she'd have been considered a pioneer in promoting positive changes in fashion unrealistic standards
But she didn't, and now she faces backlash literally everywhere, she's not respected in the fashion industry and people don't want to see her in TV any more.

Naomi had her own modeling show, first in the UK (with the stunning Erin O'Connor), then two seasons in the US. They actually supported the models!
Naomi didn’t care for Tyra because the industry made it seem like Tyra was the new young Naomi. Tyra isn’t perfect but neither is Naomi she threw a phone at her assistant. Both are narcissistic
@@taniamejia5359 Is it time to throw around the word "narcisstic"? Go on.
Naomi didnt give a damn about tyra either way but tyra was constantly playing the victim in the press...which probably made Naomi not like her, yes!

"As a woman of color you need to wear more makeup." Seems to me they let her use a product that had no pigment 🥴🥴 like Tyra get over yourself.
it was mid-00s covergirl so the products DEFINITELY were at fault
@Jena F and yet she still looked amazing. I’m going to press X to doubt the whole you need to wear more makeup because of the darker skin thing entierly.
@@MissCaraMint seriously, she looked fantastic. Make up and no makeup. All of the women are so gorgeous. I hate how the show tears them down to have little to no confidence. It's heartbreaking.
Also am I crazy, but during Yaya’s retouched photo it looked like they lightened her skin?. They always seem to do these things to the women who are darker skinned….
Girl or boy idk wtf Tyra's saying, maybe she's promoting detergent or whatever so i need watch Dr. Dray again not hypocritical back & forth.

that look in Tyra's eye when that girl said exactly why she was really there told me she was gone.

I'm just disappointed in the people filming the conversation, not editing out, turning it into drama, etc.
hi, i don’t want to sound rude or offensive, but is there a difference between having disordered eating and having an eating disorder?

Bruh lest we not forget when Tyra put white girls in blackface
Or when she forced a black girl to do a shoot with a man who had previously stated he didn't like black girls
Wait till u hear abt the episode where they turned white ppl to black…
what about the time they did a “race switch” 💀
Don’t get me wrong. I am always for women doing whatever they want but why are these beautiful women being critiqued by women filled with plastic and people that can afford thousands of dollars worth of skincare
My thoughts exactly. Especially Janice who is practically fake in almost every square inch of her body with all the plastic surgeries she’s undergone. She wishes she could be as pretty as those girls.
Yeah! Why didn't they give them a professional facial before the photo shoot? My friend did a couple of regional shoots and that was part of her pay.
No amount of silicon or Botox can fill up the hole where their self esteem should be, so they have to tear down others to make themselves feel better
Maybe you but I've had no problems with not wearing make up and never thought those things either😅
That happens to guys too, not only girls.

@@pure1769 😂😂 Naomi still haunts her and for good reason
Make us believe in you."
*girl does these things*
Judges: "You're blaming everything on the photographer/lighting/makeup and not taking responsibility for yourself and your shortcomings."
I've noticed this trap as I've watched this show as an adult.
It hindered your performance and didn't have to!"
🤦♀
Have some faith ❤
Glad both your issues ultimately ended up resolved.
I basically googled what cystic acne was and tried St. Ives apricot face scrub every two days worked wonders for me.
@@vexu7366 yup i was on accutane for a while as well and it didn’t do anything for my skin. i had to get monthly blood tests to make sure there was no liver damage and before i could start it, i had to read a huge manual and sign a waiver form. not worth it lol

hey Jessica I know this is a video from a few weeks ago, and I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it already, but you are so incredibly brave in opening up about your experience with cystic acne. while I never experience it first hand, I was talking to my fiancee about it yesterday and how many people talk about how incredibly painful and uncomfortable it can be.
It’s taken years and years to get it to be under better control, plus lots of money invested in trial and error of products, medicated creams, etc. sometimes people just need to learn to be quiet rather than give useless advice like “drink water.”
My niece has it as well, and people would always comment about it when she went out to her parents or me or whatever adult was there.
“Retouching is extremely expensive”
Yeah Tyra?
I think she did go home because Tyra didn’t want to condone that on the show.
They tried to help her, but she didn't want it, the bulimia arc of the season lasted about 3 episodes I believe
This is so true!!
Oh think the only real outrage with Julie wanting to do something else is she took someone’s spot that really wanted to do this vs someone who didn’t and didn’t really take is seriously
It’s sad that I didn’t realize how toxic this show was when I was younger. It’s like they actually made me believe that their behavior was normal.
It probably has to do with whatever social stigma the advertisers want to promote that week to help sell their products and lifestyle.
the judges: "you need to be more confident about yourself!"
Also the judges: "we don't like when you say you are this beautiful person. You need o let US validate it first"
And that’s not even what she said. She said “other people tell me I’m beautiful” but I guess it only counts coming from them.
They really don't think before they talk XD
Yo ... I wanna fight that whole panel of judges RIGHT now. Frfr. Lol (But frfr). Sickly manipulative!
@@jylessa_spiritgem4736 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
@@jylessa_spiritgem4736 Let's go!!!!
Jessica thank you for supporting and voicing your opinions for these models. Love your reviews. ♥️♥️
@@her9574 taking care of yourself is good. Being your own cheerleader is conceited, vapid and telling yourself you're beautiful is vanity.
Tyra: “This photo represents the girl who will continue-“
Jessica: “TO GET BULLIED”
You hit the nail on the head, Jess!
i love you oml THANK YOU for talking about acne like i’ve never heard before. i needed to hear that out loud from anyyyyone, seriously glad you are open about it
I’m ready for Tyra and everyone else on this show to be confronted about their disgusting snooty stuck up tendencies and be canceled. For ever
No one is canceling Tyra she definitely should apologize for her wrong doings . Cancel culture is canceled.
@@ohhappydaya I agree on her apologizing tho. But she won’t. She’s too good for all that
So, Kelle isn't allowed to feel beautiful or say someone else finds her beautiful but Amanda is allowed to say she's stunning? They're both gorgeous but why is one allowed to say it and the other isn't?
Amanda's white and Kelle isn't...we all know that women should hate themselves but women who aren't white with European features should ESPECIALLY hate themselves...
@@StonedHunter That's awful, but I have seen some videos where black women voiced this out too in regards to black men.
Racism honey
Okay Katie! I wish someone would’ve drug Janice like that on the show because she was absolutely horrid, and needed it.
@Demon Slayer Go cry about it
@Demon Slayer don’t dish out what you can’t take back, what part of that do you not seem to understand?
@Demon Slayer theres a difference, she didnt ask to be bullied therefore she will stand up for herself🤷♀️
@Demon Slayer Don't dish if you can't take 🤷♀️
I might be mixing up my seasons but I think I remember Yaya was having really bad outbreaks because they were sequestered and unable to go buy their own make up and the make up and beauty products they had weren't suitable for her.
True
I'm the same way, I got the oily skin gene but the rest of my family didn't
Janice Dickenson gets plastic surgery but is mocking someones natural face is just laughable.
even psycho tyra is disgusted by her and thrown janice a couple looks jesus christ what an unfunny woman
