@@NFTI how would it change the results when its the clear topcoat they are testing? if the paint underneath is getting scratched then the clear topcoat has well and truly failed
I think it would screw with the results. As if it's the topcoat they r testing, part of that is adhesivity to different materials. I feel painting everything with black paint would introduce a second, unnecessary, and possibly result screwing variable
This! I also don't understand the weights, you want to scratch, not indent the specimens. You should use the same pressure on all the tests, and if it scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at level 7, you have your results. Amirite?
@@ChuckRage lacquer scratch tests hardly show paint quality though. Rustoleum does make an industrial enamal clear coat which is extremely durable, though it wasn't shown in this video which is what I'm guessing krylon is trying to compete against with their ultra hard enamel. Different paints have different uses. One tests hardly shows the entire brand. Example being primers. Krylon primers have a tendency to not adhere to cold metal as well but adhere to cold plastic just fine. Rustoleum adheres to cold metal just fine but doesn't adhere to cold plastic as well. Each job has a paint. It's just a matter of knowing which own to use when. That's why my paint locker has both brands.
@@TheSlimCognito Thanks! This was really informative, I don't know much about paint. Most I've done with Rustoleum is use the peel coat. Didn't know there could be such a difference between brands and the materials they're applied to.
enamel isnt harder than an acrylic laquer, enamel paints are rubbery unless they have hardener but it will still be soft, industrial enamel (such as cast iron enamel cookware) cannot be compared to spray can enamel. (taken from wiki: Enamel paint is paint that air-dries to a hard, usually glossy, finish, used for coating surfaces that are outdoors or otherwise subject to hard wear or variations in temperature; it should not be confused with decorated objects in "painted enamel", where vitreous enamel is applied with brushes and fired in a kiln)
What a great resource! I'm glad that the Krylon brand I've been using stands up to scratches comparatively well, I'll have to try out the specialty lacquer on some bigger projects :D
That was a great idea of spraying different sections of the same sheet with the various coatings, so that you could see the transition from one section to the next. Much better than having a bunch of separate squares.

This totally seems like a project farm video. I haven't watched the whole video but I'm guessing they aren't going to be as methodical and scientific as him.
There's a reason toothbrush bristles are made from nylon, to be soft. would've been more interesting with acrylic or polycarbonate, but an awesome video as always. I've been thinking about trying to put an automotive clear coat onto an acrylic aquarium to make it more scratch resistant...
Scratching is determined by hardness not weight. You can dent the material with weight, or you could scrape it up (which would mean the scrather material doesn’t matter) but that’s it.
Wrong. While the ability of a material to scratch is determined by hardness, if it has less weight there is less force, so it doesn't even try to scratch. By your logic, setting a diamond in a table would immediately go straight through the finish and embed itself up until it was fully supported by the wood.

¹ using a large piece of material and sectioning different areas to apply the different sprays & labeling each section with what spray was used
✅ pros:
•able to get each section spayed and keep track of what spray was used on what section
•quickly jump from one sprayed section to the next with ease
❌cons:
It may have created a slight biased opinion after seeing how the 1st sprayed material (wood) sections did when you moved in to the 2nd and 3rd materials(plexiglass &metal)
Suggestion : after spreading and labeling each material & the different sections, divide each each coated section apart (so 5 sprays being tested = 5 individual "squares". And then grab some electrical tape and tape over the area where you labeled what spray is being used. That way you don't have any idea which coating your testing and just line up the squares from most durable to least durable and wait until testing all the sections to reveal which coatings were labeled underneath the electrical tape
Also having a raw, untreated, "control" section would help too. ... that way you could test how much weight would be needed to scratch the raw version first before moving forward and testing the treated sections.
²spraying the scratch proof sprays directly into the materials
✅ as long as you have a raw untreated section for comparison it's ok-ish
❌ however, if you want to get better results on just the scratch proof sprays performance alone, it might help to prime the materials being tested & put a basecoat of paint (preferably a mat black, so as to not have any glare and being able to inspect for scratches/ nicks/ imperfections that are already there and to either fix (by sanding those areas to even out the entire area being tested) or to disregard those imperfections during the actual scratch test phase.
Overall, I did enjoy the video and found it very useful and informative. And my suggestions are not meant to criticize your work at all ... they are merely suggestions that (I think) would help establish a better control/ starting point as well making it unbiased in terms of results by adding that double-blind study aspect of not knowing what spray is on each section until the reveal at the end.
