If there's one thing you can say about the Sonic advance series/ battle, it's that the sprite work is phenomenal. To this day, they've been used in many a sprite animation and are timeless.
2:19 The answer is, as Sonic or Amy (and only them in the first game), you hold R at the beginning of a rail while jumping on it. At least that’s what the instruction manual said, and when I did it, it was very consistent. Although, the manual doesn’t mention that Amy is capable of grinding, only Sonic. But yes, as a reference to her playable version in SA2B in 2-player mode, she can also grind rails.
I never used R to jump on rails, you have to jump on the flat starting point of the rail and you can do a higher "Trick" Jump with good timing of the A button near the end of the rail. Tho like John said it's *extremely* finicky and they don't really lead to the best pathways to Special Stages
Behold, the beginning of the sprites that launched a thousand flash animations. I love these games, all three, even if I’ve never bothered getting all the Chaos Emeralds in any of them(closest I’ve come is getting five or six in Advance 3)
I know I'm not only one saying this, but Sonic Advance was my childhood, growing up in the 2000s. I remember having that game in a combo pack that also included Sonic Pinball Party. I remember playing both of them during cold days and rainy days, especially in the winter. And to me, it's fitting you guys have this video in winter time this year. And it's because I like playing Sonic games during cold days and rainy days. That's my preferred weather condition for Sonic the Hedgehog
I am of the unpopular(?) that I love the hyper colorful graphics of emulated GBA games and I think Sonic Advance is a perfect example of that. I know this filter is how it would look on actual hardware, but it just looks… wrong to me.
Depends on the game honestly. This game I agree, I feel Sonic Advance looked better on the backlit models and in emulators without the correction filter. Something like Metroid Fusion? Nah, no Metroid game has the right to sear my eyes with hyper-saturated visuals, it's supposed to be dark and atmospheric. And then there's Circle of the Moon which just isn't visible at all in original GBA colors.
I completely agree, compared to Sonic 3, the Insta-Shield feels so flaccid that you may as well not use it. I wasn't aware it had no i-frames but the range extension is so small it's barely noticeable. Amy has the real Insta-Shield, her mid air attack will hit something from half a screen away, it's crazy.
I beg to differ. The insta-shield in Sonic 3 is very useful cause it can counterattack any enemies that can't be hit by a single jump. Any enemies with spikes or other obstacles protecting it can be destroyed with a insta-shield if use correctly. It's one of the best & underrated moves in any Sonic games.
Sonic also has an air dash in Advance 1 and 2. If you double tap left or right after a jump he'll do like a little dash in the air. Also Amy can grind rails... by sitting on them.
These guys made it to 100k by just talking over games and nothing else (sometimes) and Im glad i've been around for most of it (since 2011) this had been amazing

Man, the filter looks odd on this one. Like, I get that this is a simulation of how it looks on the hardware it was designed for, but it doesn’t look right on this one. There’s quite a few games that benefit from the filter, _Fire Emblem_ looks great with it on, but it just kinda looks like the colors faded in this case. I’m not gonna say this isn’t how the game is supposed to look, or throw shade for using the filter (both of which would be stupid), I’m just giving my thoughts on how the filter looks in this case.
You hold down the R button when jumping onto the rail to make Sonic grind on it. Sonic Advane 2 they allowed characters to automatically do this when touching the rail bars. So yeah, jump at the beginning of the rail and hold down the R button.
Kinda think you should have waited for the Advance 2 decompilation and pc port to be finished since it's nearly done, but I digress. Great to see another Sonic commentary this year!
