    I wish you would have told the inexperienced that if they forget to let the pressure off the container that they could potentially get hurt. Especially in very hot weather.! Yep, found out the hard way.

    I just read your article and grabbed my sprayer and dawn to give it a try as wasps were behind my shutters . It was already evening so they were all in behind the shutters . I couldn't believe my eyes as I began to spray they were dropping on the ground like crazy . I counted about 40 as they had nests behind two of my shutters . Thanks for the tip

  • @CharlesAlvear
    @CharlesAlvear 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    Couple of things I would recommend.
    1) You don't need to douse them with the mix as much as shown here. The soapy water will suffocate them. Just give them a decent spray ensuring you hit them all. They will eventually fall off and die on the ground or die while clung to the nest.
    2) I saw a couple of videos that recommended adding peppermint extract to the mix. Wasps apparently don't like that scent, so any wasps that return to the next will not want to stick around.
    3) If you don't have a pump sprayer, get your self one of those super-soaker water rifles in the toy department. Works on the same principle and many models have 30ft or more reach so you can hit nests that are higher up on your house/building. I personally like having that extra bit of distance so I don't have to run if one of them buggers comes at me before I hit it with the mix.
    4) After you've given the wasps a few minutes to die off, it's a good idea to knock down the nest so stragglers don't have a home to return to (esp if you don't have peppermint extract.
    Happy wasp hunting!

  • @tkmccoywv
    @tkmccoywv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    Add a bit of peppermint oil to that mix - a teaspoon or so - and it'll help kill them a bit quicker, but more importantly, it'll discourage them coming back. They don't like peppermint oil!

      @@rosyv51210 Yes, it'll kill pretty much whatever you spray it on. I wouldn't want to use it on something like yellow jackets just because there's LOTS of them and it takes some time, or bigger like a cicada killer, but honey bees, yes. I use it on fire ants, too.

  • @Juanelo1946

    Duke, I love this technique and I've used it myself. Soap acts as surfactant which makes water "wetter" and it can penetrate the skin (shell) of the wasps. It may not kill the wasps as fast as that expensive can of spray, but it works! And there are no environmental worries! I love it! Thanks for sharing your technique my friend!

    Great post, ill remember this next time, i freaking hate all wasps with a passion, hated yellow jackets growing up, ( as that was the only type id been stung by) and just this summer there was a small red wasp nest hidden on the outside handrail of our porch (you would have to bend over the rail to see it or be in the yard looking at it) couldnt see it standing on the porch and we are all adults so noone climbing all over the porch, lol) well waiting for someone to unlock the door put my hand on that rail and was to close to it i guess and bang- got nailed with a sting on my right hand, killed the nest with extreme prejudice, and raid. now i hate red wasps too, so just delared war on all types, if i see a wasp it dies, 👍

      Won't work on yellow jackets. We have them in decorative brick facing on our house. Tried peppermint soap water, chemicals knocked down a few, rest shrugged it off (Raid, Ortho, Spectracide, Brake Parts Cleaner, Carburetor spray) and currently a cat food water trap (caught one in an hour). Next up, shop vac w/6" of soapy water in the bottom, Sevrin powder in the holes or professional spray.

    i tried this with some kind of dirt wasp and it worked, i believe there is somethig in the dish detergent that surrounds the area where they breathe (like seran wrap) and they suffocate, it's a little slower than say CB80, but much cheaper , i also saw that starter fluid puts them to sleep, and then you can just stomp the bastards and not wory about them coming back at you, starter fluid is mostly ether, and i've gotten a big wiff of it a few times and it made me very light headed, and i paint cars, so to do that it takes some doin', lol

    great video and great tips in the comments, too! i have a few nests in an upstairs window frame i'm dealing with right now. don't have a ladder so i've been opening the window a bit, and spraying and slamming the window - "attack and run." i'm making progress, but in two days i haven't killed all of them yet since i can only get a few at a time. i read online yesterday that i can just spray them until they're dead because they won't associate me with the spray. in this video they don't come after you. anyone have any tips on whether the wasps know i'm the one spraying them? haha. these are paper wasps, so not too aggressive, but trying to not get stung, or just completely spaz out if they come after me! Thank you!

    In case Duke hasn't mentioned rain water, well water might be too hard for soap to lather. What would be really great in the case your having to buy soap anyway would be the soap in the toy section at WalMart for blowing bubbles. The stuff is really sticky whether or not you have to add water which probably you should where I should have been more familiar with reading the labeled instructions on the 1 gallon jug before mentioning in comment about it. Thanks!

    • @williamhelms9942

      Do they breathe through their legs like Crickets? If so, the bubble soap really would be effective in suffocating them.

    Worked like a charm. My house always had nests in and around the eaves of the roof but I just recently got stung two days in a row... on the same backside of my hand an inch apart. Turns out they made a nest under an electric box that was about hand level. I sure got my revenge though and took out most of the nests I could reach.

    Watched this video. I'd never heard about using soap and water to kill wasps until yesterday. I "had" two large wasp nests with about 50+ wasps on the nests inside my chicken house. I didn't want to use chemicals because I'd rather not if I don't have to and I didn't want to subject my chickens to anything that might be poisonous to them. Last night I readied my concoction of ½ gal of water and a couple of squirts of dawn liquid soap in a small gallon sprayer I have. This morning it was 48deg, perfect temp. I knew they would all be on the nests and wouldn't be flying around trying to sting me when I irritated them with the spray. I sprayed them both and within 10 seconds, all of them but 1 or 2 had dropped from the nests and every single one was DOA within the next 2 minutes. This is in fact the fastest and best way to kill wasps that I have ever seen and now used myself. This is also great for using as insecticide in the garden. Wont harm the plants but kills all the insects. I'll likely never buy wasps spray again

    You could also come at them at night if you know where the nest is, then you just hold a bag under the nest and then cut the nest down into the bag an close it since all the wasps are at the nest at night you will get all of them at once.
