  • Finding Love In Japan - 101 East
    The path to true love is never easy but in Japan, finding 'the one' has never been harder. Only a third of the nation's youth have been in a relationship.
    Many consider a romantic partner bothersome in a country famous for maid cafes, herbivore men and pop idol shows. For the government, playing cupid is now in the national interest. As the country's population rapidly declines, it's funding matchmaking events to help encourage marriage - and babies.
    Such events are also being embraced by reality shows, small towns and even monks who need a partner for their temple to survive. 101 East asks, can love find a way in desperate and dateless Japan?

    i think the problem here are unrealistic expectations. for instance, that guy kept comparing all those women to an idol. but even idols themselves don't show their fans their true selves, they show a fabricated version of themselves that they know their fans would appreciate. so really, what he's expecting from a woman doesnt even exist

      I think their "unrealistic expectations" are actually a defense mechanism against rejection, so they can tell themselves that the reason they are single is because their expectations are too high, and not because they had faced rejection.

      Honestly, what's wrong with wanting to have the best? Is it a crime to tell a woman that's she's too ugly? Who'd want to spend time staring at ugly people? I'd rather just do something else. Literally.

    • @williamzhao2521
      @williamzhao2521 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Honestly most people are single because they don't like the people they are around. That's all. They'd rather not get to know the other people.

    I'm Japanese and found this video by chance. Differences between real and documentary completely astound me. I'll tell you the truth about why the birth rate has significantly dropped here.
    First, cultures like idol, anime, and maid cafes won't interfere with ordinary people's lives at all.
    The fact fully comes from a long period of recession.
    You cannot find any crazy anime shops and maid cafes outside of Akihabara that well recognized as a geek town and a foreigner's tourist destination.
    Idol culture is also originated in the same place which means addicted people don't represent the majority of Japanese.
    How many guys know that animes excepting for children's ones are broadcasted middle of the night so that many people even don't know its titles?
    Before we were westernized, matchmaking set by their parents was a common style to find a partner since the women's job was considered to be a fulltime-house worker.
    Individual people had warmly welcomed gender equality but women are still underpaid in their works. Why? Well, Japanese traditional companies treat employees like machines regardless of gender by forcing them to work under harsh terms. They can't quit their job even though underpaid and overworked since finding a new one is difficult. Traditionally, the education of workers is the company's responsibility but not for the university. Companies prefer to choose freshmen who don't know anything and then start brainwash them to make sure that they can't complain against their bosses. Most laborers are well-educated by owners and specialized only for their system but such skills are useless outside. They are not professional for one thing because moving across various type of departments and branches are under the hand of a company. Therefore, re-employed people are offered a much-lowered salary without options that they had once. That's why retirement is considered a stigma in our society since it's difficult to find a reason to quit other than a mental issue or something.
    It sounds like perfect slaves for owners, right?
    Nevertheless, women have a different option to escape from this fate without getting any stigma. That's marriage and become a full-time housewife. So, the retirement rate of women is higher comparing to the western society. But, realistically men cannot afford women after marriage because of a long period of depression. This is pressure for men before start falling into romance. Remember, their salary is also cheap.
    Now you can easily understand why Japanese companies hesitate to provide maternity supports. From their perspective, women are fragile machines comparing to men so they are underpaid.
    Just to be sure, I have to state here that I'm not a male chauvinist and just sharing the logic exists.
    As most of us can't understand English, too many stereotype images have been created abroad for foreigner's entertainment. However, we are just people who struggling with different cultural problems. Not something like monsters nor freaks. We still love humans not dolls.

      I live in Japan. It's absolutely not as bad as it seems. It's still a functional society. People go out, they flirt and go on one night stand. I believe the real problem is their work ethics mixed with their expectations of creating a family. In Japan you're expected to work an enormous amount of hours(they even have a word for "death by overworking" and something called "black companies" that tend to make their workers work way too much, these are usually the biggest companies in Japan) to seem loyal to your company. A lot of companies do not offer any money for overtime, either(very common). At the same time you're supposed to find time to get married and have kids. There's no wiggle-room for people to enjoy having a family, it becomes more of a hassle but is doable.
      I'm still hanging around young people so maybe I haven't got the full picture. But from what I can tell from my Japanese friends and people I meet, people are still hooking up and having boyfriend/girlfriend relationships. The problem is the work ethics in contrast to family ethics(when referring to statistics). This is not mentioned in the documentary as much as it should be in my opinion. If they want people to find love, give people more free time.
      Also, most translations are made in a weird way and some of them doesn't even include some of the things they say. For example, the guy in the white shirt said one of the reasons he was being a comedic in front of the girls was to not get in a situation where the girl is angry at him(怒られる okorareru). These type of translations was in the whole documentary but I'm sure most of it was a rough enough translation.

      @tulta3631 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The lack of self respect may be the symptom, not the cause. I agree with *a.r.5604* Japanese adults aren't that nice, largely due to exactly that, narcissism. I think his own hatred that he cannot confront, coupled with the fleeing from reality into fantasy makes him hate himself. Living in your own head is not the right path and the White shirt guy senses it, but doesn't change.

      I was thinking the EXACT same thing. The first two guys are super nerdy. And not "funny/interesting personality" type of nerdy but like straight up dorks. That's why they can't get girls. Girls love funny guys but most don't want any dorks. He's talking about Girls not meeting his standard when the real reason is that him and his friends and way too "goofy goober" for a girl to take them seriously.

    Something which wasn't discussed in the video was how Japanese women are expected to give up their jobs after becoming mother's and be housewives and that there is widespread discrimination against mother's in the workplace. The choice is so black and white between being a housewife and a career woman, and men are expected to make work a priority over everything.
    Perhaps decreasing working hours so make it overall more accessible to put time into developing relationships and taking care of the house and children for both men and women.

    • @prod.arcsyne2990
      @prod.arcsyne2990 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      MagicEve thats a dumb idea, they have economic troubles, they need that money to live. and the men who are disenfranchised from relationships avoid them because they cant afford them. so what good would reducing work have for them? the real answer is, people who want to have familys are going to come to the realization, that you need 1 parent to take care of the child most of the time. and that said parent needs a flexible job or just be a stay home while the other gets the money the other family members need. And there is no incentive for men to make this sacrifice anymore.

    • @noanimezone3149

      It's not a dumb idea at all. Do you know that many japanese people die from overworking? It's a terrible problem that should be adressed.

    • @prod.arcsyne2990
      @prod.arcsyne2990 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      they are dying of overwork, but at the same time have you considered that when you have a family you have to give up what you have for them. they go to those jobs and work themselves to death because they seriously need that money. that doesn't happen to single people because all they have to worry about is themselves, and can take time off from work without hurting the people they love. if they want to fix this problem they have to give incentive for people, (especially men) to not be single and only have to worry about themselves. sex is not a good enough incentive.
      edit: also men are expected to give their wives their entire check and the woman gives them an allowance out of it. so yea, theres no incentive to want to slave like that.

    • @AylaMarianna
      @AylaMarianna 7 ปีที่แล้ว +116

      "need that money to live", yeah, too bad they don't get the fucking money when they're overworking, since those hours are to "prove loyalty". Stop being such a dolt. Look at how successful we are in Scandinavian countries. Here in Sweden, we have paid paternity leave. It is your right as a parent to be able to spend time with your children.

We should celebrate our intelligence and our freedom from animalistic instincts.
      It's instead your shaming tactics that are honestly pitiable. That you can't imagine the possibility that even a single person could live a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle while also rejecting what you erroneously think is universally important is sad.
      These Japanese men know who they are, what they want, and don't feel the need to greed for more out of life, and their honesty about themselves does in fact mean they are living in a healthy manner because it means they aren't suffering from any cognitive dissonance.

      Of course there would be a population issues when 90% of their day is spent to only focus on work.
      Its also the women who add to this. Many would like to focus on being successful in their workplace and would rather focus on themselves. Nothing wrong about that.

    I remember showing this exact documentary years ago to my family, when they said _"Terrible to see the youth so isolated in Japan today."_ I replied back _"This is not only going to keep happening over there, it's starting to happen right here as well."_ There was a following comment from them trying to deny that such things could happen in more densely populated western countries, but after social scientis were wrong about a baby boom during the lockdowns, a steep birthrate collapse in the west followed shortly after and social isolation has taken a root here as well. This is the quote from them after five years _"I was worried about Japan then, now I'm worried just like you were back then about the youth over here."_
    We need to stop thinking this problem is encapsulated in the east, since it's rapidly growing here as well. The lockdowns only made things worst and the problem more evident.

These standards are promoted by society. In the United States, the adopted standards include being sexually attractive, wealthy, and confident while in Japan the standards includes being young, wealthy, and traditional. Sometimes, many people who told to have these standards are really lost in what they truly want in a partner. It's even worse since many people have these artificial and unrealistic expectations tune out from dating and forming relationships when they soon realize that those artificial standards aren't what they really want from a partner. They tune out because they spent so much time adopting these standards instead of forming their own standards they want from a partner.

    I believe the issue of a lot of young Japanese man is that, they are too perfectionist, and there's no "perfect" woman around them. They like a pretty, skinny, feminine woman who caters to them. When they meet that kinda ideal woman for them, they get rejected because they are not handsome or rich enough. On the other hand, woman's standards are high too, not necessarily on the physical level but they want man to be educated, rich, manly... The country is not helping either, there is no support for parents with kids. No parent leave when the baby is born, not enough economic support, low amount of daycares and kindergartens... TBH it sounds like is easier to be single and enjoy the life. After all living in Japan especially Tokyo, is so much fun.

      Females are in fact more successful then man in any developed world. Just look at the statistics. Smarter women wants even smarter male partner so we should consider women more of a perfectionist than men. It is natural human instinct for a female to find man better than them because it insures survival for the next generation and that's natural. Today although men are the bulky gender of society they are usually hardworking but some aspects of society and economical tightness took this away from men making them more prone to loose there jobs and isolated themselves from relationships while thinking how much women can be very demanding from men. Those demand women place can put men in stress if the men does not have higher status like wealth and education then their partner. Men today turned reality into fantasy because it felt like they can keep up in there fantasy then their reality like real relationships and jobs therefore use distractions and escapism to accomplish there imaginations. It's that lack of social stigma that men are put through making men silently depressed without anyone knowing this make this situation truly sad in how generation treat relationships

      @asian dude Idols have a persona - like actors - where they have lots of energy, friendliness and cuteness. Keigo worships an idol but he does not realise who he loves is only a persona, she does not exist. Keigo's expectations for a girlfriend are abnormal because of his idol worship. He is stuck in fantasy.
      That's not to say idols are fake and terrible people, they are normal people like us. We just don't get to know the true person behind the persona.

      @@amelia1868 I think you are right. Fantasy really is a way to avoid reality. Reality is painful sometimes. He probably didn't have much male model or influence in his life to show him that being rejected by a female is just part of life. I was taught for example to pick yourself up and move on to the next target, that there are many fish in the ocean. I remember being told by a male mentor to think of rejection as one step closer to the One and have fun with it.

    Japanese and Korean we grew up being told we must study 12 hours per day to go to good university and everything else comes after even dating. Then we consume a lot of pop culture to ease our mind from the pressure. Also we don’t have a lot of free time or place to go to spend spare time so we play and take break online most of the time. And you continue this life style even when you are grown up. Things only get worse when you grow up with all the other problems we have. so people lose hopes and become disinterested in finding love. It’s not that they chose this reality either. But in fact we’re not that different from our past generations. We are just not forced to get married like people back in the days with arranged marriage. Without being forced to get married we just choose not to. It’s a horrible decision financially anyways.

    I am an American and almost 78. My one big regret in my life was not finding a relationship with a Japanese lady. I had a relationship with a lady in the Philippines, a French lady from Quebec, one from Mexico, a German lady from Austria and one from Colombia. Years ago when I was in my teens, I had a pen pal (pen pals were popular in the late 1950's and 1960's) and if my memory serves me correctly, her name was Michiko Haoka or Haoko. (Michiko? Are you still out there?)
    Why so many foreign women? Well, I traveled a lot because I had this powerful penchant for meeting all kinds of people and learning about their lifestyles, languages and culture. However, I have been looking deeply into the modern Japanese culture. While I think I would have a terrible time with the culture norms, I still would like to settle down permanently with an older Japanese lady. I speak Spanish, German and VERY marginal French. But unfortunately, no Japanese, but I have been looking at learning some of it on the Internet.

      Believing that there is such a thing as being at the bottom, is what destroys people's confidence to actually go out and try.

    Maid cafes and idol groups terrify me. With say, a girl in an anime or game, it's obvious that they are fictional. I mean, they're a bunch of 2D pixels after all! So it stands to reason that they way they speak and behave is also fiction. But the girls in maid cafes and idol groups are real, human girls, who are behaving like fictional characters. This is where things get dangerous. I think it's blatantly obvious that these girls are putting on an act, but I suspect that many idol and maid cafe fans might not realize this. They're going to go though life, looking for a real girl who acts in the hyper cute and childish manner that these girls do, and they're never going to find a girl like that.

      The men know it's fake too. While creepy for those grounded in reality, for those who opt to visit or live in a fantasy world instead of building a better personal reality - it is just escapism taken to an extreme. Lack of confidence, and confused gender role in a society in transition form traditional to western modern has left many feeling lost. They can't behave like their fathers/grandfathers. They don't know how to be modern men - no role models to grow up aspiring to. Loneliness hurts and fantasy is an escape. But no one is saying they can't live in a fantasy world. Women focused on climbing the ladder and expecting traditional aspects of men making more and being more successful is also setting as unreasonable standards as the men's fantasy characters. There needs to be a social shift to allow more balanced roles, and remove the unreasonable standards of and from both genders. Roles have changed, but not expectations. It kills confidence, and leads to desperation.

      This maid and idol obession makes me sick, but in a way I think that the problem goes both ways. Alot of japanese girls are high maintenance they want rich men who can give designer clothes and such things, my pinay girlfriend have a japanese-filipino niece Yukie just want designer labels and are spending tens of thousands of her paycheck every month on designer labels like clothes, handbags, shoes and other such things, if a jpanese girl doesn't have a high paying job like Yukie it's not surprising that she would be going for a sugardaddy.
