Hey Derb, Great video. Awesome job explaining. I just found a $500 4wd running, driving inspected ford ranger that I am going to turn into a welding rig like yours only mini. I also have a 2000 pound knuckle boom crane and my Miller roughneck 2E for the back. thank you for the inspiration. my friend.

    Happy new year young man!
When I used to have Series 3 Land Rover's I had free wheeling hubs on them too. Automatic ones were available but I always went for the manual Fairey brand (They made winches, hubs and over-drive units too) first and the AVM. I used to lock the hubs every 400-500 miles for a short journey so that the front axle driveshafts pulled oil through into the hubs where the UJ is. For wheel bearings, I only tightened them up until the top and bottom play on the wheel was taken out otherwise they would be too tight. Probably different of your Ford I have no doubt.
Looks like the bearing socket isn;t deep enough to clear the end of the driveshaft when you were tightening up the bearing.
    Top regards from the UK.

Although it wasn't about welding this video is informative to me because I'm looking for a 70's ford 150.

You need to get a Hanes book for your truck. And that will tell you how to do things like that.

Nice job man , very well versed explanation of how those locking hubs work! You probably want to refer to those locking gears as the locking hub assembly, just makes it easier to explain to others, even though they're only made slightly different then the machining that takes place on planetary gears in your transmission. Anyways hope that helps with your future description process of what you might be working on when going to theparts store. I was also thinking why not cut the end of that hub socket off an weld an extra length of some of the same inside to outside diameter pipe to it so you don't have to fight getting the socket on the nut so much anymore who knows might even give you better stability and torquing action on the nut.

I got a 79 ford f150 short bed with a 351m in it i think after high school i am gonna use it as a welding rig how do they handle the weight and did you have to do anything special with the rear end so it sits level?
