I will be returning to Newcastle again after 2 years of being there for the first time.
The best city in the UK for sure... I recommend visiting Newcatle.
Big hug from Norwich, I really appreciate your work on TH-cam, showing the beautiful city.

Hi Eddy, I ran the Trent House on Leazes lane for five years 1990-95. The Free Trade, like the Crown Posada, was and continues to be one of the jewels in the crown of Toon pubs. I used to live on Walker road opposite the drive in entrance you'd walk down, turn right and get to the Free Trade. Back then it was owned by a guy called Ted Pie, he also owned 'Mathers' restaurant in old eldon square. We had some momumental staff Christmas parties in the Free Trade. It's wonderful to see how much that area has been revamped. Back in the day there was an ugly broken down warehouse/dead factory behind it and on the bit of green grass behind the outdoor garden, you would see the odd hippie/punk types slashing the poppy heads that grew there, presumably to harvest the 'perfume'. The old Church with the spire you showed, which you can see if you go up walker road into town on the corner, is the one used in one of Sting's movies (evidently not Dune), in which it was portrayed as the epicentre of Polish immigrants in the Toon, but the movie title evades me. Spender i.e., Jimmy Nail was famous for turning a corner on John Dobson street and instantly standing beneath the Free Trade. The Tyne was a place no one ever went to until a guy called Freddie Plater (who used to own the Trent and and the now gone Barley Mow) bought it. I say 'bought/owned' I actually mean purchased the tennancy. After Freddie got it, that was the launch of the modern 'Tyne pub' as we now know it. The Cluny is owned by my dear friend Julian Ive, I gave him his first bar job in the Toon at the Trent, hasn't he done well! Eddy thanks so much for this, you have an avid following in Guangzhou China x

I remember The Tyne pub when it was still called The Ship. This was in the very early '90s when I lived on the Ouseburn end of Walker Road. The pub was divided into two rooms and there was a barman called Eddie who used to have Chinese spare ribs delivered from Shields Road and so, when he served you, your pint glass would have sticky sauce on the outside.

I do some volunteering at the farm in Ouseburn so know the area pretty well. There are so many good pubs and bars... Free Trade and Tyne Bar for the reasons you mentioned which are a stone's throw away from each other, but also the Cumberland Arms which has a lovely oldy worldy feel to it, The Cluny which has live music and great food, Ouseburn Garden which is great in summer and even shows live sport. Then you've also got The Ship, Billy Bootleggers, and Tanners Arms just up Stepney Bank. If you want a good pub crawl without the busy hustle and bustle of the city center then Ouseburn is hard to beat in my opinion!

Fantastic video again Ed. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the Free Trade. It truly is a gem and was always my starting point for an Ouseburn pub crawl reaching all the way to the Blue Bell in Jesmond Vale! I've not read all of the comments and seen if this has been discussed, Ed, but are there still plans for a large building on some land down by the river? I remember a lot of noise about it a few years ago now, the pub and general community weren't keen on that view being ruined by a development. Something to do with the planned ferris wheel on the Gateshead side and building a tall building on the Newcastle side to 'balance out the skyline'.

Only pubs I've been in up there was the wetherspoons not far from you on the quayside on my birthday in 2022 and the strawberry on my birthday last year. The wetherspoons was nothing special but right next to the river and had a good atmosphere. As for the strawberry well do I need to say anything about how special that place is. I do miss walking along the river so will probably be coming up again before the end of the year.

Newcastle looks great with the clear sky. Keswick in the Lake District is the furthest I've been up North. Love the beer with big head up North. Timmy Taylor's , Sam Smiths, Thwaites, Vaux, Moorhouse (Lancs)... . From the archetypal soft Southerner...

Not surprised at all, one of my old haunts. Would have probably put The Tyne above it, but you can’t beat the view from the free trade.

Bit of a put down for the Grey Horse in Consett "would you believe" it won the overall North east pub of the year twice in 2019 and 2024 got into the finals of the overall best pub in the country
it has it's own brewery onsite for a great choice of real ales and it's just a fantastic pub!
