Good brief Ronni. I would add a common mistake nearly every rookie makes with two-way radio use is beginning to speak at the same moment the Push to Talk (PTT) button is pressed. Two-way radios need a moment to "spool-up" for lack of a better term. Not hesitating the spoken message leads to the first one or two words not transmitting. This is even more a factor when your radio transmission is set to trigger a repeater (existing mountain top repeater or a temporary repeater set up by the comms techs).
In my experience a 1 to 2 second hesitation is adequate for direct transmissions. For transmissions through a repeater 2 to 5 seconds should be considered. LOL! Some repeaters are slower than others.
Full disclosure... I've been retired for 23 years. It's possible two-way radio hardware has improved and all of the above is old school. But I doubt it.

Hahah I love it!! Thank you so much for the great advice! Very helpful and I'm sure still very accurate 😂 I hear they are working on some cool new technology though.. I'm sure we still have years before it's actually implemented, but hopefully it helps the advancement of communication systems for the community. 🙏

It has. We rolled out digital P25 last month and it’s fabulous. Error correction fixes repeater lag and noisy squelch tails. Unit ID and realtime GPS is a huge advancement.

@@navvet4518 What you describe sounds very cool. Your comment indicates this new two-way radio tech is very fresh. Has it proved out in what many of us like to describe as the real world? Or is that to prove or fail this coming fire season?

@@greenfire6924 Digital P25 has been around for quite a while. We were just slow to move over to it because our former decision makers were fed some erroneous information with respects to range and some other things. We are testing until December 2024 with the anticipation of going full on January 2025. We have had great results with it so far but like everything else, it takes some getting used to as far as audio Fidelity.

As a NWCG qualled COML I agree. A big part of wildland firefighting is training and the only way you learn is by doing. We never give anybody a hard time on the radio for not knowing the lingo.

As a firefighter who teaches emergency communications: Know your assigned tactical callsigns and use them. (Use of first names degrades incident comm quickly.) Under normal circumstances do not use please or thank you. It wastes critical bandwidth.
