  • I've had quite a few questions on what I use to get my sculptures smooth and the answer is lighter fluid and/or 99% rubbing alcohol! I find that the lighter fluid works the best when it comes to smoothing the clay but, also keep in mind it is pretty aggressive and will eat the clay pretty quickly!

    Forgive me if this is a "dumb question", but... is it really safe to use lighter fluid? I'd be worried something would catch on fire! It would totally be my luck haha

      Lol! Not a dumb question at all Amy's Claythings! So you will be totally safe using lighter fluid as long as you are not using an open flame next to whatever it is that you are working on-also, it would take quite a bit of lighter fluid and several attempts to catch something on fire as seen in my "Trial by Fire" video where I set one of my sculpts on fire. I had to totally drench the sculpt with the fluid and light it a few times so you will be safe-of course, practice safety and common sense lol!

    I made a female breast (actual size) with chavant medium non dry clay. I want to to smooth it. Any tips? bigger brush? warm the clay at certain level? chavant is tough to deal for smoothing

      Hey nixland! I agree that Chavant can be a tough clay to smooth out for sure! So If it were me, I would make the sculpt as smooth as possible in the clay form to begin with-this would be running a sculpting rakeover the whole sculpt to take out any imperfections in the clay surface. Believe it or not, clay surfaces can be very misleading as small areas that are uneven are hard to see due to the color of the clay-I would suggest using a clay rake to really smooth over the surface and you can even use a flashlight in a dark room to see divots in the clay (where a shadow is, that is a divot in the clay) Once you are happy with the overall look of the sculpt, then you would take a blow dryer and gently warm up the clay. Once the clay is warmed up but not so hot or warm where the clay will smear, then take a synthetic brush with soft bristles and use the lighter fluid to start smoothing over the clay-use a larger brush for larger areas and a smaller detail brush to hit those small detailed areas! Once this is done, you may have to wait for a bit for the lighter fluid to dry out and the clay to firm up as the lighter fluid is really aggressive on the Chavant clay-this should go away after a while. You could also use a make up sponge to dab some of the excess "sludge" that the lighter fluid is going to leave on the surface of the clay. I hope this helps! Let me know if I can be of any further assistance!

    but if i use lighter fluid won't it catch on fire if i put sculpey in oven to bake?

    • @Tobywaynestudios
      @Tobywaynestudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey there! So you will want to make sure the lighter fluid has evaporated and is gone before you put your sculpt in the oven-you will notice the clay will be tacky when the lighter fluid is still present so make sure the clay is not tacky before putting it in the oven! Usually it will take about 30-40 minutes for the lighter fluid to evaporate-hope this helps:)

      It sure will! Just make sure you have the lighter fluid completely dry before baking your clay!
