I was thinking the same thing when I watched HXH for the first time and saw Gon do the same things as Kurapika. I can't wait for when the hiatus is over and Kurapika finds out about what Gon did in the chimera ant arc. It could be a huge wake up call for Kurapika.

What's interesting about Gon's arc is that in Chapter 345 in the manga, Ging said, "This'll be a good opportunity for you to figure out what you can do as you are right now.". The narrative has already suggested that Gon is not ready to be a hunter, due to his immaturity and undeveloped mind. And we know that he won't stay cooped up on Whale Island forever, both because of the Gyro subplot and his thirst for adventure. This line mixed with you're analysis on the story's themes, suggests that if Gon were to disregard Ging's advice he may ultimately meet an untimely demise. It fits with your idea of disregarding others for desire being the antithesis of Hunter X Hunter. I have my own theories about how this could play out, but regardless this was an awesome end to "Togodshi Month", Mathwiz. Keep up the good work!
Honestly, in a setting with wild royal power plays, a Giant World across the pond, and a crazy magic system that seems to defy easy categorization, I'm most interested to see how Gon develops in the future...and he doesn't even have powers now.
I likes this sene because it indecates that gon's character is developing, saying that ging is not a father figure, douting himself to be not good son, deciding he didnt listen to miso chan, learning that he should hold responsibility for his actions, I would like to see him develop What power will his new mindset give him
In the first few minutes you mentioned that some people might not like that the manga doesn't put any spotlight on gon right now.. And tbh I actually never thought about that. In a lot of other series I can get pretty annoyed, when they start following other random secondary characters even for only a chapter or 3, but with HxH, that never actually happened... My guess for why, is because Gon kinda never really was the only main focus character. I personally never watched the show to see gon's journey, but instead for basically all the characters and concepts playing off of each other. And I think a lot of people probably also read it that way, and never even bat an eye, when gon went away before the journey to the dark continent arc
Yup I agree totally with you. I think togashi said that he intended to make gon a little bland as a character and gave more complexity to other characters so that the story can switch perspectives once in a while and still keep his readers interested.
And in all honesty, do you really think gon, a character who we have followed in a mostly heart warming light (besides the last arc he was in) to be in the DARK continent. Like with what’s going on right now, I have no idea if he would be suited for the chaos that is that arc. Me personally I love love kurapika and I always wanted to know whether or not he would go through with his revenge plan, but right now it seems he’s not focused on that, but rather collecting the yes of his people, who is being held by that scary dude I forgot his name. Despite Killua best and desperate efforts to save his only friend... it would already be to late and now have to witness the horrors seeing his greatest friend he ever had... turning into an unrecognizable monster that's far worse than demons. You should do parallels between Leorio and Killua. I know the obvious already, one is a doctor and the other is an assassin. However, If you look deeper into the surface they share alot of resemblance and opposites, for examples. They care for their close friends, one wants to save lives the other wants to kill, one holds integrity the other isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty, one wished he had a family while the other wish he didn't had a family, one was born poor while the other was born rich, and etc you get my point. I know how you feel of worrying and being hopeful. However we should have full faith in Togashi of finishing the series. Hunter x Hunter is both the successor and unfulfilled potential of Yu Yu Hakusho. Yu Yu Hakusho had a promising and ambitious Arcs that was going to be a masterpiece but was cancelled due to pressure of becoming higher ups demanding the series become a mindless action fight fit for mainstream audiences. However Togashi won't let his fans down this time because he know he had to fulfill the potential of Hunter x Hunter. So we all should have faith in him though we don't know how will he make it through by finishing it but we know he can do it by backing him up to support him. Without faith in our lives our spirits would just be dead energies. Also you should get into one piece because the writers always consistent of writing chapters even at his limits. But if it was Berserk... oh boy! Imagine being a drug addict and waiting your dealer to arrive, that's how great Berserk is! Berserk is that lover that loves you but abuse you... and you want more of that love and abuse!
Now that is a pessimistic approach, though personally, I think Gon actually has some chances to have a happy continuation, because if he d just fall done again, that d just be a repetition, so he might actually get the second chance just like Killua at the beginning
It’s like irl how certain big things in your life, are big, but in the end they feel like flowing pieces in your memory, bc they are, at least for me. I get excited for things and sad about them but the very next day I don’t have the same feeling or not as close to what I was feeling yesterday and that’s how I feel hxh is idk. I love your precise and eloquent use of words, it’s really easy to see that you are a good analyzer just looking at your use of vocabulary. Anyways, the way you pointed out the contrast between Gon and Kurapica was so damn interesting and it is sth I haven‘t really thought about. Another great aspect I never actually had thought about is the intended use of anticlimactic moments in order to strengthen the narratives main message. You already enumerated so many good examples and I really love how Togashi has settled this concept subtly into his manga. Looking back, it even makes the finale of the anime with the main message even more beautiful and inspiring. Togoshi really loves to contrast characters in this series. The thing is however, is that it's so subtle that you don't even notice it. This video points out Gon and Kurapika, another one points out Gon and Meruem, and even though the manga is going at turtle speed you can go the same with Kurapika and Chrollo.
The last part of the video shows that HxH philosophy is ultimately very similar to Onepiece. It’s clear that in Onepiece the end goal of finding the Onepiece isn’t what the story is all about and it’s the adventure that will make it valuable to us too. Luckily though we’ve already been assured by Oda and in the manga that the Onepiece isn’t just “adventures we had along the way” but the adventures will make things more sweet when we finally do get there.
Great video! I really would love for Gon and Kurapika to meet and talk to one another and honestly Killua and Leorio as well since they tend to play support and shoulder a lot of burden trying to protect their friend. I think something I find fascinating also is that no matter where Kurapika goes, he can't help but make connections even if he's not trying to. First it was Gon, Killua, and Leorio. Then it was Melody and Basho, and now we have Oito, Woble, Bill, and Shimano. I feel like that is something worth talking about and why I feel like Kurapika's not as down a dark path as a lot of people seem to think. It'd be way easier for him to succeed if he was truly so ruthless and uncaring but he has his own detours that steer him away from his goal. First it was moving to help his friends when they got captured for his sake and now it seems (SPOILERS POST ANIME) like he will do the same to protect Oito and Woble. There also feels like there's another set up with all those eyes and a head of a kurta that might make him test those limits as well and the fact that the spiders are aboard the ship too.
Togashi made his arcs flip between anti-clamatic and climatic with the intention to support the theme of Journey and Destination. Every arc despite it's resolution or lack thereof feels tense and rewarding. His character creation emphasizes this as well. Take Gon. Gon's goal is to meet his father. Gon also decides to sacrifice himself to defeat Pitou despite not meeting his father. In that instance, Gon cared more about this detour than his goal. This serves as a rejection of the destination theme. Kurapika is a rejection of the Journey theme, sacrificing himself and his relationships for the sake of his goal. Killua has no real sense of goal and left his home with the intention of finding that supporting the Journey theme. Leorio's character support the desination theme as he decides he needs to leave in order to achieve his goal. However he doesn't act in extremes like the other characters. We can turn to Hisoka who is a character who is Journey focused as he risks losing and dying in his desire to fight however he is also capable of waiting for Gon to develop or Chrollo's nen to return showing that he has goals. Chrollo and the spider are Journey focused as he says himself when Gon asks them what they fight for, they respond with no real answer. Meruem is interesting for the fact that his journey leads him to change his goal which supports the Journey theme. I'm sure there is more characters to analyze but there is a more prominent theme shared by all characters of the show and that the aforementioned desire or Egoism. Hunters are ruthless and selfish. The only characters who ever develop are those who learn to not be selfish. Gon is incredibly selfish and when his selfishness peaks, he learns that he can not be that way anymore. Ging is selfish to leave his child behind in pursuit of desire. Leorio wants to be a doctor, Kurapika's desire for revenge. Any character in the show is "Hunting for their dreams". However it's the characters who learn Altruism that are worth a damn which creates yet another theme in itself. Togashi is truly a master writer.

A smaller thing to note but one thing that particularly fascinated me is that the only two times in the anime where we see the black/white/red effect used are at the height of Gon and Kurapika's arcs, highlighting their unfortunate similarities and willingness to lose everything, Kurapika with his emperor time ability and Gon with his nen seal. I'm sure there is much more underlying analysis in this idea but this one was the most obvious and pressing for me. A great video by the way! One of my favorites!
Kurapika is that guy that could be the best of friends one could ever wish for, but he is consumed by grief, anger and revenge. That makes him so toxic to those around him. It is so significant when Melody reacts to his heartbeats. She is frightend and sad for him. She sees a good person on the outside, with a devilish heart on the inside. It is also interesting to notice that while Gon and Killua develop themselves together, Leorio and Kurapika are extremely far apart. Kurapika sacrificed everything for power and sped up his nen development in a matter of months, while Leorio is arguably the slowest of the late bloomers.

I have gotten into hunterxhunter after watching many videos talking about it. This video reminds me of why, I love your enthusiasm and it pushes me to keep reading.
This brought me a whole new perspective on the themes of Hunter x Hunter. With every video I watch about this show it just goes to show how well thought out the story is and its characters
I like kurapika, I'll follow his story but I don't want Gon's story to be over. I really hope he gets more arcs with killua. So I'm praying that Gon and Killua are having a break rn and the authors just temporarily focusing on kurapika's story.

Heres how to fix his Ability 'Tag': Make the Rules so the Opponent has to Catch you at all Cost; and then bind Manipulation into the Ability so that the User fals under youre Mindcontrol if he loses the Tag-Game. That way, youre Army grows. With just those 2 simple Smart-Moves while creating the Hatsu, it's actually rather terrifying.
This idea was a concept in my head back in 2017 when I was initially doing the Thematic Breakdown series, but it was only after revisiting the story in full for the Nen Show recently that I figured out what exactly I wanted to say. So counting the 2 times I've gone through 2011 in its entirety, the time I watched the 1999 adaptation, and that recent manga reading, I've gone through most of the material at least 4 times. What are the odds that Prince Wobble and Queen Oito are the things that stop Kurapika ? On the other hand he already lost decades of lifetime so maybe he just drops dead anti-climactically at some random point
That's what I'm betting on since whenever Kurapika interacts with Woble it makes him happy. I like to think Kurapika in Succession War is going to be the opposite of Gon in Chimera Ant. Where Gon threw away the mission at hand to get his revenge. Kurapika might see a chance at revenge (like seeing Chrollo) but will choose his mission instead which is to protect Woble and Oito.
I'm sure Kurapika wouldn't drop his mission, even if he walked into Chrollo right now. Likewise, I suspect that Chrollo would prioritize Hisoka (though I can't speak for other members like Nobunaga who can react more impulsively). But it's like Mizaistorm said: Kurapika has a lot on his plate right now and he can't afford such a major distraction. He has so many death flags sticking to him already and he hasn't even started his personal mission of retrieving the Scarlet Eyes.
But that itself is the tragic end of gons story. He went 100 cause he was emotional, his journey arguably ended there. Without nen hes just another kid with insane sences and stuff.
Can you do shanks vs kite next? I recently found out about you and hunter x hunter is my favorite as well. I binge watched many of you videos and I love your analysations. Shanks played a big role in Luffy's life like Kite in Gon's and they both lost a hand while protecting. Shanks is more goofy while Kite is more stoic and blunt with his words but still caring. Maybe you can find other differences.
I mean if gon didnt fight with any restrictions, he probably woulda died or have some weird plot armor save. It wasn't a bad progression of the story imo
I can't imagine anyone ever being underwhelmed or upset that Kurapika is now the series protagonist. I love Gon, but this is something I wanted since the start of the series.
Kurapika can still use his chains on other people not only the phantom troupe. The thing he can only use on the phantom troupe is chain jail which is the middle finger not the whole chains.

You should do parallels between Leorio and Killua. I know the obvious already, one is a doctor and the other is an assassin. However, If you look deeper into the surface they share alot of resemblance and opposites, for examples. They care for their close friends, one wants to save lives the other wants to kill, one holds integrity the other isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty, one wished he had a family while the other wish he didn't had a family, one was born poor while the other was born rich, and etc you get my point.

I know how you feel of worrying and being hopeful. However we should have full faith in Togashi of finishing the series. Hunter x Hunter is both the successor and unfulfilled potential of Yu Yu Hakusho. Yu Yu Hakusho had a promising and ambitious Arcs that was going to be a masterpiece but was cancelled due to pressure of becoming higher ups demanding the series become a mindless action fight fit for mainstream audiences. However Togashi won't let his fans down this time because he know he had to fulfill the potential of Hunter x Hunter.
So we all should have faith in him though we don't know how will he make it through by finishing it but we know he can do it by backing him up to support him. Without faith in our lives our spirits would just be dead energies.
Also you should get into one piece because the writers always consistent of writing chapters even at his limits. But if it was Berserk... oh boy! Imagine being a drug addict and waiting your dealer to arrive, that's how great Berserk is! Berserk is that lover that loves you but abuse you... and you want more of that love and abuse!

Now that is a pessimistic approach, though personally, I think Gon actually has some chances to have a happy continuation, because if he d just fall done again, that d just be a repetition, so he might actually get the second chance just like Killua at the beginning
I love how most hxh arcs have anti climatic endings really makes it different from other shounen.
It’s like irl how certain big things in your life, are big, but in the end they feel like flowing pieces in your memory, bc they are, at least for me. I get excited for things and sad about them but the very next day I don’t have the same feeling or not as close to what I was feeling yesterday and that’s how I feel hxh is idk. It just flows and the arcs/seasons don’t rlly mush together badly

Another great aspect I never actually had thought about is the intended use of anticlimactic moments in order to strengthen the narratives main message. Togoshi really loves to contrast characters in this series. The thing is however, is that it's so subtle that you don't even notice it. This video points out Gon and Kurapika, another one points out Gon and Meruem, and even though the manga is going at turtle speed you can go the same with Kurapika and Chrollo.

The last part of the video shows that HxH philosophy is ultimately very similar to Onepiece. It’s clear that in Onepiece the end goal of finding the Onepiece isn’t what the story is all about and it’s the adventure that will make it valuable to us too. Luckily though we’ve already been assured by Oda and in the manga that the Onepiece isn’t just “adventures we had along the way” but the adventures will make things more sweet when we finally do get there.

During the chimera ant arc, the series feels like it changed from a shonen to a seinen. Going from gon to kurapika doubles down on that.
Great video! I really would love for Gon and Kurapika to meet and talk to one another and honestly Killua and Leorio as well since they tend to play support and shoulder a lot of burden trying to protect their friend. I think something I find fascinating also is that no matter where Kurapika goes, he can't help but make connections even if he's not trying to. First it was Gon, Killua, and Leorio. Then it was Melody and Basho, and now we have Oito, Woble, Bill, and Shimano.
I feel like that is something worth talking about and why I feel like Kurapika's not as down a dark path as a lot of people seem to think. It'd be way easier for him to succeed if he was truly so ruthless and uncaring but he has his own detours that steer him away from his goal. First it was moving to help his friends when they got captured for his sake and now it seems (SPOILERS POST ANIME) like he will do the same to protect Oito and Woble. There also feels like there's another set up with all those eyes and a head of a kurta that might make him test those limits as well and the fact that the spiders are aboard the ship too.
Togashi made his arcs flip between anti-clamatic and climatic with the intention to support the theme of Journey and Destination. Every arc despite it's resolution or lack thereof feels tense and rewarding. His character creation emphasizes this as well. Take Gon. Gon's goal is to meet his father. Gon also decides to sacrifice himself to defeat Pitou despite not meeting his father. In that instance, Gon cared more about this detour than his goal. This serves as a rejection of the destination theme. Kurapika is a rejection of the Journey theme, sacrificing himself and his relationships for the sake of his goal. Killua has no real sense of goal and left his home with the intention of finding that supporting the Journey theme. Leorio's character support the desination theme as he decides he needs to leave in order to achieve his goal. However he doesn't act in extremes like the other characters. We can turn to Hisoka who is a character who is Journey focused as he risks losing and dying in his desire to fight however he is also capable of waiting for Gon to develop or Chrollo's nen to return showing that he has goals. Chrollo and the spider are Journey focused as he says himself when Gon asks them what they fight for, they respond with no real answer. Meruem is interesting for the fact that his journey leads him to change his goal which supports the Journey theme. I'm sure there is more characters to analyze but there is a more prominent theme shared by all characters of the show and that the aforementioned desire or Egoism. Hunters are ruthless and selfish. The only characters who ever develop are those who learn to not be selfish. Gon is incredibly selfish and when his selfishness peaks, he learns that he can not be that way anymore. Ging is selfish to leave his child behind in pursuit of desire. Leorio wants to be a doctor, Kurapika's desire for revenge. Any character in the show is "Hunting for their dreams". However it's the characters who learn Altruism that are worth a damn which creates yet another theme in itself. Togashi is truly a master writer.

A smaller thing to note but one thing that particularly fascinated me is that the only two times in the anime where we see the black/white/red effect used are at the height of Gon and Kurapika's arcs, highlighting their unfortunate similarities and willingness to lose everything, Kurapika with his emperor time ability and Gon with his nen seal. I'm sure there is much more underlying analysis in this idea but this one was the most obvious and pressing for me. A great video by the way! One of my favorites!
Kurapika is that guy that could be the best of friends one could ever wish for, but he is consumed by grief, anger and revenge. That makes him so toxic to those around him. It is so significant when Melody reacts to his heartbeats. She is frightend and sad for him. She sees a good person on the outside, with a devilish heart on the inside.
It is also interesting to notice that while Gon and Killua develop themselves together, Leorio and Kurapika are extremely far apart. Kurapika sacrificed everything for power and sped up his nen development in a matter of months, while Leorio is arguably the slowest of the late bloomers.

This idea was a concept in my head back in 2017 when I was initially doing the Thematic Breakdown series, but it was only after revisiting the story in full for the Nen Show recently that I figured out what exactly I wanted to say. So counting the 2 times I've gone through 2011 in its entirety, the time I watched the 1999 adaptation, and that recent manga reading, I've gone through most of the material at least 4 times. Hunter x Hunter is a significant influence in my daily life, if you couldn't already tell lol
I don't think I've ever seen someone discuss the "desire" aspect of Hunter X Hunter.
Yeah it wasn't until I saw this video that I really connected the dots to why it was called Hunter x Hunter lol. Afterwards I felt so dumb because the main theme was woven masterfully through every arc like... Am I stupid?

What are the odds that Prince Wobble and Queen Oito are the things that stop Kurapika ? On the other hand he already lost decades of lifetime so maybe he just drops dead anti-climactically at some random point
That's what I'm betting on since whenever Kurapika interacts with Woble it makes him happy. I like to think Kurapika in Succession War is going to be the opposite of Gon in Chimera Ant. Where Gon threw away the mission at hand to get his revenge. Kurapika might see a chance at revenge (like seeing Chrollo) but will choose his mission instead which is to protect Woble and Oito.
I'm sure Kurapika wouldn't drop his mission, even if he walked into Chrollo right now. Likewise, I suspect that Chrollo would prioritize Hisoka (though I can't speak for other members like Nobunaga who can react more impulsively). But it's like Mizaistorm said: Kurapika has a lot on his plate right now and he can't afford such a major distraction. He has so many death flags sticking to him already and he hasn't even started his personal mission of retrieving the Scarlet Eyes.

Shanks played a big role in Luffy's life like Kite in Gon's and they both lost a hand while protecting. Shanks is more goofy while Kite is more stoic and blunt with his words but still caring. Maybe you can find other differences.
