This should be an on going video series. Make more shop videos like this as time allows. It took Doug 30 years it will take you just as long and tools and things will change and need updated. Keep it up and the shop will be something you will be proud of and show off. Love the videos keep it up.

One thing I learned from my grandfather was to take Mason jars of various sizes and screw the lids up underneath the shelves in my tool shed. I then fill the jars with various sizes of loose nuts, bolts, cotter pins, and other small items, and then you simply screw the jar up under the shelve(s) and they hang there ready for you to grab whatever you need. The clear glass eliminates any guess work on what’s in the jars. Fast, cheap and functional! I have also been using plastic versions of the jars since they came on the market.

    • @randallsmerna384

That works well until you drop a jar, accidentally hit it, or screw it into the wrong location.

I used to hang my saws the same way but found that having the bar oil reservoir above the weep hole creates just enough pressure to let the oil leak out all over the floor.

After I hung up one saw, I found oil on the floor. I put a large tin can below the saw to catch the drips. Not a perfect solution, but it reduced the mess.

Just made the holsters per Doug’s recommendation. Tip for getting the 4 inch pipe around a weird form like a nailer or something larger with thick to thin curves: use a heat gun to get the PVC pliable, then form fit it around the tool. Worked really well for me. Shoutout to One Eye Customs

The foam cut outs isn't to protect the tools as much as it's the hold them in place when you shut drawer as well as to know when one is missing...
You'll see the value of the foam when you bump into an open drawer or close it in a hurry...

Hey Adam. Workshop organization tours/builds are always huge on TH-cam. It's a fairly untapped market on your channel, so it would be worth the effort in subs to pursue it. Even a once a month build or area of the shop/garage focus should bring a loyal new batch of subscribers. Everyone loves to see new ways to organize stuff and see that they're not alone in not living in perfection all the time. We all have stuff that we wised was more organized/better stored and we know that if we do it, our work/hobby will be all the better for it. There are tons of successful woodworking channels that almost exclusively build shop organizers. Jay Bates, John Heisz and April Wilkerson pop into mind (although all do build things other than organizers) and Steve Ramsey's content is crammed full of small shop ideas/tips. It's a fun (and lucrative) path, if you're interested. The added bonus is most of those people are also interested in your tractor, wood cutting, pond building, etc and will watch it all.
    Keep up the great work!
P.S. Tool companies LOVE to sponsor/provide free stuff to TH-camr's getting views. ; P

If I can offer any advice on what to buy first is buy storage/cabinets workbenches first. Even if it’s used off marketplace just get places to put stuff you can upgrade to toolboxes and better cabinets later but it’s way harder to add storage after you fill your shop with stuff. And don’t have anywhere to put things.

"A little grinding and paint makes a welder you ain't". Personally I like to have a tool wall in back of my work bench and put all of my most used hand tools on it. Each tool has an outline of the tool and nails driven into the board to hold the tool. That way I can work on project that might be tall and not have height restrictions by the shelf over the bench to hold tools like you have. The important thing is that you have started to organize your shop and as time goes by you will see what works and what can be better, good Idea using screws that will make changes easier in the future. Great video Adam & Doug, thumbs up.

I strongly recommend that you re-consider Kaizen Foam for your tools. Don't worry your tools not being expensive enough to warrant it. The foam is cheap and you can buy it in sheets.
Once you have your tools cut in you will love it as they are always in the right place, they don't roll around when you open and close the drawers and putting them away is easy. When you buy replacement tools you just throw away the foam and recut for new tools.
The foam is cheap and once you get used to it you will knock up a drawer in 20 minutes.

    • @MrCarrera28
      @MrCarrera28 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@OneEyeCustoms Sir, given the sublime level of organisation you have in your workshop, I respectfully have a suggestion from my garage.
For all the drawers in my tool cabinets I have had had custom magnets made which are on the front of every drawer. These magnets have a text description of what is in the drawer and also have a photograph of the drawer's contents.
This improves visual management as you can see the contents and this is often quicker and easier then reading labels to try and remember if your post it notes are in the "label" drawer or in the "stationery" drawer. (Post it notes are handy everywhere including the garage!!)
Only costs a couple of bucks and because they are just magnets they don't leave residue when you remove them when you update the drawer's contents.
I am big on having everything look neat and organised (if it is neat and nicely colour coded, there is an incentive to keep it clean which all contributes to process efficiency) so I have the background of the magnets colour coded to match the drawer they are attached to and I picked a single font that I liked so they look integrated with the drawer and look consistent.

Great video Adam. One tip that I came across was from watching an auto-body tech installing a new convertible top on an old classic car. He had to paint some brackets that held the top on the car and to produce a clean, run-free finished product, he used a heat gun to heat the metal and then spray paint to brackets while heating them. Produces a near powder-coated finish. I've used this tip on a few items I've painted that were metal, and the results were excellent. Trust you will find this useful!

One minor thing he could do there is to use a digital angle finder much like what is used on a table saw. The block of wood is fine, the angle finder makes it easier if you are using multiple angles. You've definitely got a gem of a neighbor! I happened to catch the video before this and immediately subscribe to your channel and his and have been enjoying a much cleaner shop of my own. I have five or six chainsaws laying around myself and they are taking up valuable floor space. Just another life hack that puts organizing at the tip of the spear! I would love to see more ways to get my own shop clean and presentable. Great video!

Awesome. My garage is not a complete disaster but still a complete jumble. I have no excuse now.

Gonna go make a chainsaw hook today in the garage. Actually I have 2 chainsaws I need 2 hooks….oh but I have a hedge trimmer too and this would work for my little leaf blower I use for blowing sawdust….good idea. And that tool he made to bend the hook 180, my life is missing that gonna have to make one now.

I’d live to have a wood stove in my insulated garage. Great video!

Getting things up off the ground, and getting the basic hand tools organized is absolutely key. I keep my wrench suitcase (similar to your husky case) in a lockable cabinet which has my hanging 20v tools mounted to the underside of the top shelf- the PVC is far too expensive so I made my hangers out of scrap 3/4" ply with slots cut into it, and same material to make the stiles/verticals that the panel are screwed into and that screw into the upper shelf from the top- made it for the price of the 12 screws holding it together. My larger 20v tools like skilsaw, sawmill and railgun go up on the top shelf. The charging station is located on the end of my bench where there is power. I did not install the chargers inside the upright locker due to heat/ventilation and not wanting to cut a hole in the cabinet as mice/critters cannot get in.

The video of neighbor Doug’s garage was certainly impressive. I’m hopeful that your garage improvements will inspire me to get started on some organizational improvements in my garage! Nice idea, Adam.

Adam are you going to cover the walls? It seems like you should do that now if you have plans to do it. I like the way Doug's shop is painted white. It really brightens everything up. I thought that was the path you were going down , especially since you make videos in your garage. I love these videos. Anyone who is into firewood is probably also into garage organization. Great job man. God Bless.

I just finally bought a large 52” tool box after watching the last video. I could t stand having my tools loaded in multiple smaller boxes unorganized.

Today's tip: There is a step you can take to make toe nailing/screwing mush easier and keep your boards where they belong. Right around 8:50 you are using your level to set your vertical 2 x 4. You can measure out as normal and then level, but put a nail at the top and bottom of that line and simply rest your new board to them. They will keep you from going out of level or plum.. Then simply pop the nails out and use them for the next board.

And since he already showed us that he has a Kreg Jig he could just use Kreg screws.
