What I love about his story is he wanted to play at Alabama. He said that he coach he meant with was like “we don’t play freshman but you can earn a spot eventually, and why would you choose Auburn over us, they haven’t beaten us in a decade and they won’t for another decade.”
So Bo went to Auburn, played as a freshman, and beat Alabama first year there.
Now that’s boss.
The thing that I admired the most about Bo is how classy he was through it all. He was beyond a doubt the best all-around athlete prior to the hip injury, but he was never cocky about it. He just played the game and let his performance on the field speak for itself. Just glad I'm the same age as him and got the opportunity to see him play both at Auburn and in the pros.

Bo got injured on the field showing that he can compete against any other player and that injuru stopped him to be great by numbers. But if he was lucky to play long enough, he could be one of the Top5 RBs in the league history. Not if the GOAT. But I know about Berry😁 for me he was best in not the best team. Same as Megatron.
Played doubles tennis with him and Tim Jessie at Auburn at an apt complex in 84. Beat the hell out of us. And we were pretty good. He never said a word the whole match. Could not return his 100 plus mph first serves. Played us as if his life depended on it. Some of the things he did on the court that day was amazing. Greatest athlete of my lifetime.

Played pinpong on a cruise against Bo in 98. Utterly slaughtered me. And I was a 2 time north carolina state youth tournament invitee. Refused to shake my hand afteward. Just said I was an unworthy adversary. Played the game like he was knee deep in the muck in 'nam. His final serve was so powerful the ball shredded apart and embedded itself into my forhead. Still use it as icebreaker to this day.
Bo Jackson is my hero. I broke my hip at 21, avascular femoral head necrosis, the head of my femor lost blood supply and it slowly died, extremely painful. At 25 years old I have a total hip replacement. I rehabbed my hip with yoga and within a year was sitting lotus and back to my old self. I got my motivation and belief in my bodies potential because of Bo Jackson showing what was possible. I would have given up if not for the inspiration I derived from Mr Jackson. I owe you alot Mr Jackson. Thank you for being such an amazing role model.

He barely even practiced at Auburn. Coach Dye talked about how hard it was to balance him because other teammates saw how he got special treatment. He would just show up for game time and run for 200+. (He had a game where he ran for 200 in the 1st quarter). He also did not like to lift weights (at least in college), so pretty much the sculpted physique you see was all natural, yet some people have a hard time believing he wasn't on roids. I can understand why they say that, but he wasn't on roids, hell he barely weight trained. This fact is easy to see in his photos and videos - his physique while sculpted was gracile. He wasn't all bloated and "swole" like people today.
He once said baseball was his first love and the NFL was just a "hobby." So we have a guy who was one of the best NFL RB's of all time calling it a hobby. He only played half the NFL season most years and didn't go through their off-season drills. He just basically showed up and played.
He is a hall of famer in two sports
If he had not destroyed his hip he would have been in 2 hall of fame's. Today's nutrition and training isnt that much better. Pure myth. Medical advances are way greater. People understood nutrition then as well. Look up Mackie Shilstone.

Man growing up in 80-s and 90-s I was able to watch Gretzky, Bo, Jordan, Prime-Time, Montana the greatest players of all time.
When you look back at that period it's unbelievable. The players who would be heraldef as the greatest players of their individual sport ever all playing at the same time. It should be known as professional sports' orgasmic period.
Makes you realize how lucky we were! Jordan is probably the most famous athlete in history, Gretzky transcended hockey and I LOVE Montana... But Bo and Prime Time, now those two are giants amongst us. Wouldn't it be great to have an interview with the two of them, comparing their experiences? It would be like having two Captain Americas in the room at the same time. What a remarkable person Bo is in every single way.

He did what Jordan wanted to do. Excel at two sports at the same time. Bo Jackson definitely laid the foundation for an athlete to do it. He's definitely top 5 imo for all sports GOAT 🐐

Some people would have been a lot better off without drugs, like Darrel Strawberry, he was an unbelievable ball player. But Bo was multi-dimensional.
I didn't know Steinbrenner tried to sign him with the Yankees in highschool. Deion Sanders another two sport athlete said he was beast that says a lot from an hof.
My grandfather went to auburn and he was there to witness some of the greatest plays in the schools history. Like punt bama punt and much much later the kick six. But he still says that seeing Bo run all over Alabama in the iron bowl was the best part of it all.
Even more amazing on top of his NFL and baseball feats, his track and field stats at high school weren’t far off Olympic standard- 10.3 for 100 metres, 6.09 in the high jump, 7.5 metres long jump, great numbers in decathlon. Definitely greatest all round sportsman ever - speed, hand-eye coordination, strength, footwork, game sense, etc.
10.3 is fast but not Olympic fast. I think he may have had the state record here in Wisconsin. I ran against guys who ran the 100 around 10.6 a couple times in high school. Guys in the Olympics ran under ten seconds.
Bo was my hero, growing up just outside of Oakland I was a diehard Raiders fan. He is easily the greatest modern athlete, but Jim Thorpe may be the best athlete of all time. Olympic gold medals in the Decathlon and Pentathlon. Played professional Football, Baseball and Basketball.
You really have to run sub 10.0 now to even get in the front gate. Usain Bolt raised the bar unbelievably high and is truly an outlier, but even without Usain, you better be running sub 9.9 to have a legit shot at the podium now.
yeah, very very rarely do track stars have success in professional sports. both baseball and football have very very specific skill-sets. In football, you have to want make contact - that is the last thing track stars want. For Bo to conquer all three is unbelievable.
I have almost every single baseball or football card made for this man. Not even a collector or fan of souvenirs anymore but he was my inspiration growing up and I would never give them up. Thanks Bo for everything! 🙏

My dad got to meet Bo Jackson back in 89. As my mom said at the moment, he was trying his best not to freak out and go full fanboy. He said it was like meeting Captain America, he still has his baseball card even at 70.

This absolutely breaks my heart to this day. If you watch the moment he was injured in slow motion you can see that yes the defender made him come down awkwardly on his leg but there is no doubt that his own leg strength is what caused the most damage. It’s both horrible and amazing to witness. I am so thankful for TH-cam and the like so I can show my children what a legend actually looks like.
You're right. Much to his own demise, his strength was so strong. He literally pulled his hip joint out of socket while the tackler held onto his leg. Tragic way to end such an amazing athletes career.

Probably one of the best parts of being a kid, you put some cool shoes on, think they're awesome, you believe in your heart you can run faster and jump higher than before. Then you get older, still like cool shoes, but first you try to find a pair that don't hurt your feet, that are more practical, and don't dare try to run in them because you don't want to be gassed after 10 yards.
I've heard people describe Bo Jackson as a "once in a generation" athlete. He retired 30 years ago. I'm still waiting for his rival to appear.
I read somewhere that when he got injured, the tackle was awkward but normal and the strength and velocity he was running with is what actually what was mostly responsible for dislocating his hip.

He was tackled from behind, and that pulled his femur out of his hip socket. Neither player was at fault, just a terrible injury for an incredible athlete.

Yes. I met him in the hallway of Haley Center when he came back to finish his degree. Yes, he is the nicest person. And he finished his degree as a promise to his mom. War Damn Eagle!!
I took a great picture of him in front of Haley Center in 83. I gave one to him and to him it was for his Mom who was real sick. He signed another copy for me which I still have.

Still remember his last game, what a shame his career was so short, I don't like the Raiders, but he & Marcus Allen(when Al actually let him play) were one of the best rb tandems ever, & completely unstoppable on Tecmo Bowl, haha.

Cool. I met him a few times when I was a kid. Even ran a 100 yd dash against him. Bo was at Auburn then. He was always nice.
I never met him. Best story I can share is me being one of not so many Raider fans at that game in Seattle when Bo ran all over the Seahawks on MNF. After that play where Bo carried Bosworth into the end zone I went crazy cheering, so much so that ABC caught me on camera and included that clip in their pre-game MNF promo before every game the following season.

Bo was not only one of the greatest athletes of all time, he is a great and very humble guy. I saw him at the LA Coliseum many times with the Raiders and he put on an incredible show, coming in the 2nd half of the season after playing baseball .The Good Lord doesn't make many people as special as Bo.

I still remember watching that game vs the Bengals live. Never would have dreamt that tackle would have been the end of his football career. I had so much Bo memorabilia and even his Nike shoes. Imo he's the greatest all around athlete of all time hands down. We will never see someone play in mlb and NFL at same time let alone be an all star in both. Bo was destined to go to canton (doubtful for Cooperstown)if not for his injury!

Definitely the greatest athlete I have ever seen. I wished he had just stuck to baseball, he would have had a 20+ year career and put up some incredible numbers and retire and still be able to walk normal without all the pain.

NFL and College football HOF, and won 2 Gold medals in Track 1912 Olympics. 3 Football championships, first "president/commissioner" of the NFL. Also won a collegiate ballroom dancing championship, Played in the MLB and played with an all native American basketball team.

I remember watching his first game with the Raiders when they pitched the ball to him and turned the corner faster than anyone that had ever seen. That is still the play that comes to mind when I think of Bo. There were a few players that tried multi sports, but only Bo excelled at it!

I was an 80’s kid and there wasn’t anyone else like him. As awesome as he was, he seemed humble and was never in any trouble that I remember. He became a legend when he ran over Boz. In my mind, the greatest all around athlete of all time.
It's worth noting that later Deion Sanders would also play professional baseball and football simultaneously, just as Bo did. And while Deion is also considered a phenomenal athlete, he never was an all-star at both like Bo was.
As someone who grew up watching Bo play all those years, I can honestly say it is NOT just hype. In fact, watching him do his thing back then was MORE impressive than all these tribute videos you see about him.
He was just something very special and unique.

I think Deion could have easily been an all star in 92 when he hit over 300 while leading league in triples. Bo cranked 30 homers his all star year but led league in strikeouts and hit 250 that year.
Both incredible athletes, Bo probably a better peak while Deion a much better athletic career. Shame we got robbed of Bo’s potential.

I've heard so many Bunyanesque stories about the guy. Each and every one of them sounds like the sort of lies old men tell each other about their own exploits. In Bo's case, I believe all of them. Jumped over a river? Of course he did. Killed a 500 pound pig with a rock the size of a golf ball? Sure. Did a back flip while standing waist deep in water? Absolutely - look at the guy.
Compared to what we *saw* him do, those stories are easy to believe.

Very glad I got to see this man play football in person I was at his last game. The first time I ever saw this man was against the Seahawks on Monday night and I went to all his games just to watch him play football Bo Jackson and Mike Tyson were the two greatest sports players on the Earth.

When I see Bo in the hockey gear in that Nike campaign, it makes me wonder how good of a hockey player he would have been. With his size/speed /strength i think he would have been a defenseman with an absolute hammer of a clapper and a force in the corners or clearing the front of the net.

Bo is a genetic marvel.
Absolutely he was the best athlete of all time. Had it not been for his injury, he could have easily been the first player in sport history to be a MLB and NFL HOFer. He was just that damn good!!

Bo lives in the Chicago suburbs. I saw him a few years ago sitting outside a Starbucks by himself sipping on a large iced drink, wearing a pink/purple one-piece road cycling outfit. He still looked incredible. And I’m so glad he’s such a kind and humble guy, for someone who’s popularity rivaled that of Michael Jordan.

Both Bo and Wilt were the great once in a generation athletes, I feel fortunate I got to see Bo play.
What about Herschel Walker?
Greatest athlete of all time. He actually ran qualifying times for the Olympics in a few track n field events, and didn't even train for those events specifically.

I’ll never forget the all star game where he caught the fly ball while running full speed toward the fence. Caught it over his shoulder he hit fence wheeled around and threw the ball. Incredible! Yet my favorite thing about him was lack of arrogance.
I recently interviewed a teammate of Bo's on the KC Royals. He contends that Bo is the greatest baseball talent he ever saw and the greatest athlete, too.
I watched a sports scientist break down Bo’s injury, and he said that the main problem wasn’t the tackle itself, but actually was the fact that Bo’s leg was so strong, it pushed itself out of socket when he couldn’t bring his foot back up after pushing off the ground. Obviously the tackle was the reason for this, but still. That’s crazy

I grew up a Philadelphia Eagles fan, but back in the day, I always played as Los Angeles on Tecmo Bowl. Their running back was the fastest player on the field. They didn't use players' names, but we all knew it was Bo!
I am from Kansas City and watched him at many Royals games. Even after his hip was done he still played baseball and could hit 425 foot homers with no rotation and nothing but arms. Dude was a freak of nature.

The most impressive thing about Bo Jackson is with all of the amazing things he was doing he remained grounded and was a humble man. And then to lose it all from the hip injury that would have devastated most people and most have been the hardest thing he ever went thru he did not allow it to destroy him and continued on with his life. A very special person .

i met him at Four Lakes Pub in Lisle, IL almost 30 years ago. he was at the bar drinking, shaking people's hands, talking to everybody that came up to him. he couldn't have been nicer. he and ernie banks easily the nicest sports people i've met.

1330 Merit St. were I went to see him and his mom. The biggest thing I remember in my life. Great guy from a great family. Always has my respect 🎩
