Thank you for this fantastic conversation Nick and Raelan! Nick is one of the most inspirational humans I've been blessed to know. Only he could bring laughter to the agony of the healing journey (another one of his superpowers).🤣Even with crushing symptoms, Nick KNEW he could recover and was determined to find the missing pieces. As he says, those were somatic tracking. (which turns down the amygdala and ANS response), self-compassion (which makes our brain feel safe and allows us to hold our suffering with love) and being present (which is the "being" part of this human experience). Well said and done, Nick! And Raelan, I am in gratitude for your compassionate heart and invaluable content that guides so many people back to hope and health.🥰 For anyone watching, know that you too can find your missing pieces and reclaim your wellbeing!!! Nick, and so many others on this channel, are living proof. Follow whatever gives you just a little more energy and optimism one step at a time.❤

What a lovely interview, thank you. Many (most?) people with ME/CFS have their four Fs permanently switched on, for whatever reason. The trick is in finding the switch so that we can start to regulate our emotions and identify real danger from perceived danger. When it was suggested by my therapist a few years ago that I had symptoms of (childhood) C-PTSD the penny started to drop. The pain was often a way of dealing with huge emotional fears arising from childhood trauma that I had never even acknowledged. Since then I embrace the triggered perceived ‘fear’ and grief with self compassion, have daily walks, including slow meditative walking, wild swimming in cold water, cold plunges, and I journal and do something creative, drawing or painting every day. I have recently reached that awareness of needing to ‘ignore’ these perceived ‘danger’ signals, by pushing through with compassion, reminding myself that the danger is no longer there, that I am safe. Thank you Nick, everything you said makes sense and is timely as for me. ❤
Thank you for this great video! Nick is an amazing "blokey bloke" & has such an encouraging story. So many of us, especially empaths, show compassion to others, but struggle to show that same compassion to ourselves. I can relate to the wine shutting off all the pain & stress, but it also comes with a myriad of other issues, physically & mentally. You are both beautiful people, inside & out! May the Lord bless you both & all those suffering with chronic pain 🙏
@@Mozzos I'm curious, when did you realize you were ready to push through the pain and push for 9 days of running? I'm able to hike for an hour for consecutive days. Thank you again for the interview, what you said just clicked, especially the somatic tracking. I googled it, took a book out of library yesterday and it makes alot of sense.
@@Ingridh98 I worked with Rebecca Tolin who lead me through a practice graded exposure. If you watch my video with Rebecca or Dan I go into the running in a lot more detail. Videos can be found on my website which is in this video description. Back in 2013 when I learned about Sarno and mind body approach I tried running, squats and push ups but it would cause flair ups. Using graded exposure and self compassion is what worked compared to trying to bullying myself to recover.

Another beautiful interview! I think that is the piece that I haven’t done yet: being gentle to myself and accepting of my perceived deficiencies. Thank you for doing this, Raelan!
Thank you. Apparently the human experience is hard in many ways we just don’t consider. I desperately needed this. Not because it is brand new to me, but because I slipped back to my old ways without realizing it. Thank you so much.
Completely vibe with this recovery story! Always felt its been me vs me and I am getting there by practising presence and safety in my body. Great story and congrats on your recovery!
I’m going to start practicing the self compassion with the script asap. Thank you so so much for getting out of your comfort zone and putting yourself out here. I’m curious how to figure out the balance between between not overdoing it/pushing through and being indifferent to the pain. I started out trying to push through everything. Feeling the the pain, feeling the fatigue, but trying to do everything anyways. (Like you spoke about) I didn’t get significantly better until I gave myself permission to rest when needed and to stop exercising and cancel work without shame. When I do more, I seem to crash. So, I guess I need to learn more. Because, whenever I pushed in the beginning, I was so optimistic and I crashed so hard. Feel on the right track. Again, thank you!!!!!
I love his honest and laid back approach to describing his experience. Also lovely to hear more humour here! Thanks to both of you. 😀 I resonate with so much of this in my own healing journey, including not knowing what emotions were (a long time ago, which lead to other health issues). Agreed about the brain - tremendous science behind it at this point and the Western medical system needs to become aware of it.

This is very emotional, esp Nick talking about the pain/symptoms being a manifestation of our body loving us/ warning us. Re googling terms : I had to lookup what 'self soothing' was after my therapist for ME/CFS told me to it. I had no idea what it was or how to do it.
Such a typical “ Aussie sense of humour” and laid back attitude. Thanks for your honesty Nick, can’t imagine the average Aussie guy being as open as you! 🤣🤣 Such a great interview Raelan. With many thanks. From an “ Aussie girl” 🥰

So pleased you've recovered, Nick. Sounds like an amazing journey! 💫 I'll have to look into TMS and see Rebecca's resources. Thanks again Raelan, for all the effort you put into doing these interviews. 💛
Thanks Nick and Raelan for this encouraging and empowering interview! It's highly relatable for me in different aspects...especially the brain science and the importance of self-love on our healing journey. I feel like CFS symptoms as being a 'perceived danger response' of the limbic brain (Sarno) fits well into the approach of Dan Neuffer that it's a dysfunction of the Autonomic Nervous System. In my experience these are only two sides of the same coin. I'm glad that Nick speaks out so clearly what he said to himself when using f.e. the 'somatic tracking'. That makes it much more practable than only talking about 'brain retraining' in general. 🙂 I suppose the indifference towards CFS symptoms doesn't mean ignoring or pushing through the symptoms at all. It's just about removing the judgement and the worry/fear aspect and so the potentially adding stress part of it, otherwise I would behave the same way like I did before CFS, which gets me nowhere.. Your interview has reaffirmed me that it's conducive if the 'consistent messages of safety' implement physical strategies like pacing/baseline work just like the mental and emotional aspects like 'somatic tracking'...all channeled and supported through self-love. The brain wants to feel safe on all levels. A step-by-step process in which body and mind wants to go hand in hand into a healthy living. I'm happy for Nick that he has solved his puzzle and is back to full health. For me Nick reflects beautifully that compassion and self-love in the way we treat ourselves in everyday life is the major contributor to a sustainable and lasting recovery. I'm going to incorporate these exercises in my journey. ❤️
The way you worded this was so helpful! You clarified why I felt such intense anxiety at the indifference aspect. When this first started happening, I didn’t let pain or fatigue stop me and it got me sicker and sicker. And it took me a long time to stop optimistically trying to live the same way and exercise the same way. And I really hurt myself. The script was so loving and beautiful, but caused instant anxiety because it felt like I was invalidating my body’s message to me. I tweaked it a bit to take out the anxiety (for me).. “Love you _____. You are feeling pain/fatigue right now, but I want you to know that you are safe. You’ve come so far already in learning to live a new way and should be very proud of yourself. Your body is not broken and one day soon you will move forward better than ever before. You are doing great and are right where you need to be on the path to recovery!” I may change it as I learn before. But as of today, it’s a message I fully believe and support.
@@francinesanchez5402 Thanks Francine. What a thoughtful reflection..yes I believe we have to understand the message which our body gives us which of course is not always easy but I think our body guides us with its ebb and flow of symptoms.. Love the message you developed for yourself. ❤️ Wish you all the best.
Brilliant interview thank you so much Nick and Raelan PS Raelan Im the same with alcohol and socialising! That is actually what made me realise it is my nervous system. Loved this interview thank you again. I am recovering from LC and can’t wait to run again.
you will run again! check out Rebecca Tolin TH-cam channel, her latest video is with a fella who recovered from LC using TMS/mind body approach. Rebecca coached me to a life without pain! wishing you much healing.
Can relate to this so much! I'm finally starting to slowly recover after doing 6 months of EMDR, reading The Way Out by Alan Gordon, (Sarno too), and starting Somatic Tracking Meditations. And yes, learning self-compassion & boundaries have been critical, too. Thank you as always 💛🙏
I love this comment! Alan Gordon is a rock star in this Mind-Body field, learnt much from him through the TMS wiki. Looking forward to your recover video soon!
Wow I suffer from this and watched this videos on and off and the alcohol part she mentioned is so damn true!! We’re all safe and certain things help things shut off and create a safe space. We’re all going to heal. We can be safe.
Remove the fear and attention and move into doing life 🙂 when the symptoms come up, ask what is going on psychologically not physically. Helps me realise I normally have something I’m worrying about when a symptom comes up
Also with the ANS gone haywire, I've had strange symptoms to do with memory, eg, now I'm having copycat IBS, it remembers IBS from years ago - (onions), last year I had copycat menopause, copycat premenstrual tension, look out for these things and don't be fooled, my copycat symptoms are a smaller version thank god, I often talk to my brain like its a child and I'm explaining it
I am in this situation... did yall experience any vision changes and brain fog? This is by far the most awful experience ive ever had and im so young... this is a very nice interview 😔
@Kathy Mc Hi Kathy Mc, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve had ME/CFS for years and the principles/strategies he’s referring to briefly here have helped me SO so so much in my recovery. Somatic tracking has been a game changer for me, as well as self-compassion, mindfulness, body awareness, a true felt sense of safety, etc. So I think there’s a lot to potentially learn from his story that could maybe help. I wish you the best!
Hi Ezza123, I think he’s using the term “pain” to refer to all the different symptoms he had, which included fatigue. Although it does sound like various pains were some of his predominant symptoms. But the principles he discusses here have helped me majorly further my own recovery from ME/CFS! 👏🏼👏🏼 It’s all about bringing safety to our mind & body in ways that work for us and help us get into a healing state. Self-compassion is huge for helping us get into a healing state so our body can find balance. I wish you all the best!!
yes cfs/me, I had every symptom, syndrome and condition under the sun. I discovered Dr Sarno TMS approach worked for everything because it's all coming from the brains perception of danger which turns on the pain danger signal. My symptoms would switch from cfs/me to burning, to migraines, back pain so on.
Hi Lu Baker Art, I just wanted to share that I’ve had ME/CFS for a number of years and using somatic tracking on the sensations of fatigue in my body has been a game changer for me in helping with my recovery! Also I am learning to be more compassionate with myself with helps put my body in a healing state! So I think these principles he shares in this video can be super helpful with ME/CFS! Blessings on your journey; I wish you the best!
Really would have been helpful to explain more of his symptoms since the treatment was psychosomatic Were they constant or fluctuating? & what caused worsening etc.
Yeah I hear ya but so so many recovery interviews focus on that and it’s so depressing and triggering for some. Check out my interview with Dan from Pain Free You first 16 minutes all symptoms discussed. It’s on my website which is in this video description.
For me, TMS work has become a daily,must-do practice, for nearly a month now. And even though difficult emotions and symptoms and fatigue have shot through the roof of late, I believe it is due to an 'opening of the floodgates' affect - so I'm viewing this as a DIFFICULT but necessary step toward recovery. Mind-body practices are, in my opinion, the foundation to true healing.
Thanks for the message. What your experiencing is very common, that happened to me a lot. I would smile and laugh when the sensations would moving around the body because it proved 100% it was TMS. So so excited for you because I know you are in the process of recovering!!
Honestly I never understood this approach. Even with the education and trying to ignore the danger signals of the body. The body doesn't allow me to just get up, do shit and ignore all of that without deep consequences. So either this interview misses some points or he's just "lucky" that his issues have been resolved with this approach.
Don't give up! You can still remind yourself you are safe and well without physically getting up like he did. That work will be powerful enough. Persistence and repetition is important. Keep going :)
A lot of people who have recovered have been bed bound, so you’re not alone. I know there can be resistance when you first learn about this approach to healing, but please be open. There are different ways to heal the nervous system, and you have to find what’s right for you. You also have to be gentle with yourself. Don’t be a perfectionist when it comes to healing and please be patient! I recommend checking out CFS Recovery on TH-cam. Miguel has very helpful videos!
It's not gonna happen right away. The key is to not freak out when you get symptoms and know they are just from your brain. Staying calm and believing you are fine is what is going to train your brain to chill and not send you symptoms in the future. It's a brain rewiring and it takes repetition
@@miamia2365 well said, constant messages of safety and becoming indifferent to the sensations/symptoms. I found "so what, go on living" worked very well and treating sensations like clouds, let them float pass without engagement.

Wow I suffer from this and watched this videos on and off and the alcohol part she mentioned is so damn true!! We’re all safe and certain things help things shut off and create a safe space. We’re all going to heal. We can be safe.
Love this!
Thank you!
💛
Thank you so much, Matt!
O dont got fever since 13 yrs ! Have blister in my throat
Remove the fear and attention and move into doing life 🙂 when the symptoms come up, ask what is going on psychologically not physically. Helps me realise I normally have something I’m worrying about when a symptom comes up
What if you could hardly breathe and sleep and your body gets weaker and weaker? Did Nick had Mitochondria Dysfunktion, because a lot with me cfs have
Also with the ANS gone haywire, I've had strange symptoms to do with memory, eg, now I'm having copycat IBS, it remembers IBS from years ago - (onions), last year I had copycat menopause, copycat premenstrual tension, look out for these things and don't be fooled, my copycat symptoms are a smaller version thank god, I often talk to my brain like its a child and I'm explaining it
I am in this situation... did yall experience any vision changes and brain fog? This is by far the most awful experience ive ever had and im so young... this is a very nice interview 😔
yes and yes. Many vision problems, not fun BUT healing is possible
Yes - I had light sensitivity and vision changes whenever I had a flare in symptoms.
Yes, my vision is so bad since i got CFS. Blurred vision and eye floaters
Yes I have too. Blurred vision for me.
It’s thinking disgusting that people suffered from this years ago. Yet noththink in all the years has been done to help people.
I do understand that this was a healing story and a great story. But, I didn't hear the ME/CFS part.
Same. It’s a bit confusing.
Thanks. I'll just cut out then...
@Kathy Mc
Hi Kathy Mc, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve had ME/CFS for years and the principles/strategies he’s referring to briefly here have helped me SO so so much in my recovery. Somatic tracking has been a game changer for me, as well as self-compassion, mindfulness, body awareness, a true felt sense of safety, etc. So I think there’s a lot to potentially learn from his story that could maybe help. I wish you the best!
Thanks raelan ❤
❤🙏🏼❤️
Fab interview x is Nicks website still current? Server is saying that it can’t find it.
Where can we find Nick? His website isn’t working
Hello Raelan : can help me to stop my moving pain . I could not understand how TMS can do that
Try checking out Dan Pain Free You TH-cam channel, many videos that explain it all
we can do it guys
In this video he didn’t talk about cfs it was about pain ?
Hi Ezza123,
I think he’s using the term “pain” to refer to all the different symptoms he had, which included fatigue.
@@lorierosseau8908 yeah thank you 🙏
Long covid same thing, I have to do what you said and like he saidn
Alcoh makes mine worse especially next day
I’ve fallen in love
💖💖💖
So this sounds like back pain not cfs/me?
yes cfs/me, I had every symptom, syndrome and condition under the sun. I discovered Dr Sarno TMS approach worked for everything because it's all coming from the brains perception of danger which turns on the pain danger signal. My symptoms would switch from cfs/me to burning, to migraines, back pain so on.
@@Mozzos ME is a condition, not a symptom. I find it unlikely that you met the diagnostic criteria for it.

Hi Lu Baker Art,
I just wanted to share that I’ve had ME/CFS for a number of years and using somatic tracking on the sensations of fatigue in my body has been a game changer for me in helping with my recovery! Also I am learning to be more compassionate with myself with helps put my body in a healing state! So I think these principles he shares in this video can be super helpful with ME/CFS! Blessings on your journey; I wish you the best!
Really would have been helpful to explain more of his symptoms since the treatment was psychosomatic
Were they constant or fluctuating? & what caused worsening etc.
Yeah I hear ya but so so many recovery interviews focus on that and it’s so depressing and triggering for some. Check out my interview with Dan from Pain Free You first 16 minutes all symptoms discussed. It’s on my website which is in this video description.
🙏🙏🙏
Did You have pain all over ..anixty ?
Happy to have a chat, can contact me through my website.
Please dont laugh, some of us are in hell. A year and a half and things barely got better. Im running oug ofoptions
