    Even though it went in a complete different direction, "Best Of The Best 2" (1992) is a sequel that surpassed its original.

    • @Zurround

      From a literary standpoint he was like an amalgamation of Vega and Zangeif ahahahah. Since he was such a narcissist its pretty dumb to have being someone who fights people to the death as a "career" since um... AT SOME POINT YOU ARE GOING TO GET HIT IN THE FACE MAN. Not even Brakus can block or dodge every kick and punch as was proven in this movie.

    The original movie did very very well on home video, and with Van Damme doing well at the box office, this sequel took a chance in the cinemas. But as you said, it tanked. I watched it on video at the time, and though I think the fighting is great overall, and I liked the continuation of Dae Han's involvement here, it was a disappointment. I remember being stunned that Travis was killed off, and it soured the association I had with the original at the time. The revenge in the underground fighting tournament is thus taken from any other martial arts action film of its day. The fight scenes with Tommy are excellent all the same, and Ive always thought Phillip Rhee should have been far more successful.

    • @brianlagrant9757

    Loved this! It's funny - so many elements in common with Sensei Seagal's flicks, only here it feels like good-natured and (goofy) fun. Eric Roberts entering the venue in an evening jacket, looking like James Bond and kung-fu'ing bad guys...what's not to love? And the "guns are unmanly" guy.
    Also, Wayne Newton had a cameo in the James Bond flick "License to Kill" as a sketchy TV evangelist.

    I like how this series progressed. At first we have some dedicated traditional martial artists battling it out in a tournament.
    Next we learn that Tae Kwon Do can lead into underground pit fights to the death and some weapons are introduced.
    Finally the third one ended up being a carbon copy of the plot of "on deadly ground" and a 3 ninjas movie, and oh my God the guns.

    Ok, this is really dorky: Tommy isn't driving down The Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas Blvd). He's driving down Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas which is 4 or 5 miles north or so. AKA Glitter Gulch.
    Back in the old days, Vegas was centered around Fremont Street. Starting in the 1960's, the larger new casino were appearing on The Strip. This area down south isn't even in Las Vegas, but in the unincorporated area of Paradise (though nobody really cares about this). By 1989, all the new major casinos were on the strip and it's popularity had eclipsed Fremont Street.
    You can't drive down Fremont Street anymore like Tommy. In 1994 the road was closed and turned into a pedestrian mall with a giant light roof of lights over it. It's called "The Freemont Street Experience".
    Fun Fact: A proposal that made it a LONG ways to completion for Fremont Street instead of the roof was a life size Starship Enterprise Hotel. It sounds insane, but it was very close. In fact, the money was completely in place and the Fremont people were ready to go, but a new Paramount executive pulled the rights for whatever reason.

    *#1 -* the guy at the back door whom Travis gives a half-pint of Jack Daniels to so he’ll let Walter in with him… that’s the same guy who’s Girlfriend Travis was Dancing with which started the bar fight in _Best of the Best I_
    *#2 -* Ironically, Wayne Newton’s one of the highest ranked Martial Artists in the entire _Best of the Best_ franchise.
    *#3 -* I’m glad you touched on how Brackus is basically Ivan Drago, but you missed the fact that this movie follows SUCH A SIMILAR formula to _Rocky IV;_ fellow fighter/close friend gets killed in a fight in first act of movie, main character/fellow fighter winds up in a fight against the fighter who killed close friend/fellow fighter to end the movie.
    *NOW,* when I was a 65-Lbs. 8 year-old kid, I was a brown belt with very little concept of physics…this movie seemed great…now as an Engineer in my mid 30s…

    First, can’t see Wayne Newton without thinking “holy crap, Wayne Newton’s hitting on mom”. (Vegas Vacation)
    Second, Rifftrax just uploaded their riff of the movie “A Talking Cat!?” and I can’t help but laugh at how far Eric Roberts has fallen. I know it’s cruel, but still… And he is definitely ripped in this!
    Third, yeah…they must have paid that showgirl a lot of money to smile while flipping the switch of a clearly piss-poor electrical apparatus.
    Fourth, the fruit buffet Wayne was eaten must have been all that was left of what craft services had after everyone ate all the cheese danishes and waffles at breakfast.
    Finally, this is funny as always. We just watched the IT Crowd, from star to finish, and it was hilarious to see the clip of Roy talking about the fire at the sea park.

    You should do the No Retreat No Surrender “quadrilogy”. No Retreat 1-3 and King of the Kickboxers. The latter a total Xerox of Kickboxer but still awesome.

    The main bad guy Brakkas, is also the guy who gets taken out by Van Damme in Cyborg, in that scene where Van Damme does the splits above him. Brakkas was also in the movie Gladiator with Russell Crowe.

    This was as zany of a sequel as you could ask for. Phillip Rhee was giving me some very liu kang vibes in this too and with all due respect to Robin Shou, he would have been a killer liu kang. And also Baracus is also the big German dude from Gladiator. Im gonna rely on you going foreword in this series as I never had a want to watch the rest, got too run of the mill.

    Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees) plays a character named "Backdoor Man".
    Brakus is played by Ralph Moehler (who would later play Conan the Barbarian in a god-awful TV show)
    David Boreanez (Buffy and Angel) has an uncredited appearance as a valet.

    I think what he meant, and this is just a wild guess. He talks about 1 of 3 people who can beat Barrakus, he means himself, Barrakus himself, and the guy who owns/runs the club... Maybe? I don't know, these movies leave a lot up for interpretation. So you're probably right in your assessment Redeye.

    I loved this movie as a kid. Did they ever explain how an Asian Tommy was really an American Indian? For some reason i doubt it was an adoption given their living situation on the rez and all. Also for another great action flick from the 80's. Firewalker with Chuck Norris and Lou Gossett Jr. Also has the dude that played Tommy's uncle in it.

    Fun fact: my friends and I watched this in the theater. It was dumb and silly, and we had a great time. We loved that the movie just very casually took Tommy from being the son of a Korean woman, to being the grandson of a Native American woman and it's never addressed. A handful of people clapped when Travis died. I have to assume they were the only people apart from our group that actually saw the original.

    • @brianlagrant9757
      @brianlagrant9757 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Sklabah

      I saw it in the theater with my pals too! It cribbed so much from the first Mortal Kombat game, at least in attitude, which was a huge hit at the time in the arcades and with us. Tommy's "panadudeacross" kick was VERY clearly a call to the Liu Kang fatality. Good times!

    • @thee_seoul.brotha
      @thee_seoul.brotha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2
