    I’m digging your waxed jacket coverage. I’m planning to make my own waxed or tin clothes canvas jackets and pants soon using some TH-cam videos like Lone Woodsman and Carl Morawski out of some Levi’s trucker jackets. Hopefully I can achieve some of the benefits of the commercially available ones and can always save up to upgrade to one of these someday. Hopefully companies like Thursdays and Huckberry stick around for a long time making more affordable options for footwear and other heritage style goods.

    I have had the F&T Hudson in an olive color for a few years. Love it. It has a little more of a sophisticated look. I tried the flannel lined trucker but couldn’t get sizing right. The medium was too tight around the chest/back & the large looked bulky, so I returned for the Hudson.

    Hey Nick, awesome video, I bought the F&T jacket a few years ago after watching your review and love it, even bought a second in a different colour. The other waxed jacket I have that is awesome and another favourite, and solid alternative to the Barbour options, is the Peregrine Bexley. Check it out, for me it's a more dressier and cooler version of the Barbour, I like it just as much as the F&T. Cheers, catch you in Melbourne sometime!

    Im what you referred to as a husky guy and the Rogue territory Supply jacket fits to perfection. I had to get an xxxl as opposed to an xl or xxl in Barbour, Filson but its been great. It's so easy to fold up and make disappear in my bag when travelling too. I would say that I can stand it in the cold as it's unlined but in the heat with some sweat it is really horrible feeling.

    Hey Nick, glad you touched on Thursday's waxed jacket (I've been wondering about them for a while)! Did you have any plans on reviewing Thursday's new leather jackets? The pricing on them is really competitive, so I'm pretty curious how decent they are for the price.

    I have the Supply Jacket from Rogue Territory. I've had it for about 8 months. I ride a motorcycle, so this thing has patina'd very quickly due to dirt and car exhaust. It looks fantastic. None of the product photos of this jacket do it justice. It looks great on a slim or athletic body.

    Important point about cotton lining instead of polyester, its not about being "more natural":
    1. Cotton breathes much better than polyester. If you wanna stay warm you can have a wool lining, that way you wont get wet like a polyester flannel lining.
    2. Cotton does not retain sweat, body odour and bacteria like polyester does. If you've ever had stretchy polyester training wear you'd know how much faster these start to stink, and how much harder it is to remove the smell than cotton. You basically have to use way higher heat, more soap and dry it faster.
    3. Polyester products bleed BPA into your body through your skin. These are chemicals that are proven to disrupt your hormones.
    4. Ripped polyester flannel linings are harder to mend back together once they rip. Cotton canvas, denim, wool etc are much easier to stitch than a part ployester or full polyester lining.

    I just bough 2 freenote cloth riders jackets (tan/oak) and one tan Bradley Mountain tan cabin jacket with zipper.
    All are Amazing jackets. The freenote arm gussets are eye catchers and functional. I meant to keep only one but I just may keep all of them.
    The Bradley mountain cabin jacket with zipper is awesome. It’s inner lining is more comfortable than freenotes and the inner sleeves aren’t silk so you don’t tend to have those moments where your arm stick to the sleeves if it gets hot like when wearing the freenote cloth riders jacket.
    I guess when it comes to silk arm lining on the sleeves, there are pros and cons.
    But I do wish the Bradley Mountain had some of the details the freenote has.
    Also, Bradley needs to remove their front label on their chest pocket. It’s just an eye sore in my opinion but I understand they are proud of their product and want to show that it’s American made.
    Bradley Mountains pockets and their fit is really great. I thought it would be more boxy but it’s surprisingly formfitting.
    I love the zipper and snaps combo on this jacket. Most wax jackets don’t have a zipper, and this is a good example of one that is made with the combination of both.
    Although I wish it had the free note cloths arm gussets.

    I had read somewhere that Huckberry's canvas is weighed pre-waxing and Thursday's is measured post-waxing, so they're really almost the same. Not sure if it's true.
    I have the Huckberry Wool-Lined trucker jacket. A bit more coin but I'm glad I went with that version.

      I actually bought one of their earlier edition waxed trucker second hand for 5% of the original cost. No nick, no tears, no frays and the thing has to be almost a decade old at this point. It is in their brown but when I got it it was already so faded it was yellowish. The bottom of the breast pocket flaps remained nice and brown. I suspected the previous owner tried washing or bleaching it but the presence and smell of wax still there tells me otherwise.
      Considering the age, the wax already wore off in a lot of places and the patina was more actual stains, inkstains and blemishes than patina. I can guess why the original owner decided to dump it into the trash pile headed for some Asian clothing bundle store.
      I gave the jacket a wash to get rid of any remaining wax, scrubbed off most of the removable stains and finally used some Rit colour removal before using their charcoal grey to redye it. I originally planned a tan or a light brown for the redye but I had no prior experience with Rit's products and how they would interact with stains so I went with a darker shade.
      I'm happy to report three things for other Gustin owners' reference. Firstly, despite Gustin's recommendation of never letting the canvas encounter hot water, I had to put it into a hot water bath for the colour removal and dyeing and I saw and measured no shrinkage. Second, Gustin also says to never allow the jacket to be in a spin cycle. I allowed it to be in 400 RPM cycle setting with a couple of heavier rags as padding for the washes before and after dyeing. Both times did not cause any changes or shrinkage to the fabric. Third, the stitch threads used for the jacket are likely a polycotton blend because after dyeing the jacket the only thing remaining brown were the threads so now my jacket suddenly has denim looking contrasts. Some of the corners were also unassailable by the dye so if you looked at the edges really really closely, there's some grey to less grey more yellowish fading.
      I worn it unwaxed twice and I will say you can really feel Gustin's heft with their I think 10 ounce fabric (unwaxed). It wears like a denim jacket already.
      I have since rewaxed the jacket's outer layer with around 70g of fjallraven wax and I have to say I'm more than pleased with the results. My only comparison is my unlined Flint and Tinder trucker that has the cleaner look (along with 30% thinner fabric at 7 ounces) but the Gustin gives you a rugged look with the fabric being nice and stiff after waxing. My only complaint would still be that back can be slightly restrictive and the cuffs are a bit too small.

      @@cheekibreeki9155 One thing about mine is that it came with a minimal first layer of wax that became a lint magnet. I had to use a pill razor on it before waxing it.
      I put my dressing in a water bath before applying it and left the jacket outside in the summer for a few hours before. The result is/ was amazing. A rich inky blue that got better and better after three layers of wax.
      Breaking it in is going to be fun.

  • @TjPhysicist
    @TjPhysicist 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    One thing I have to point out, that wasn't obvious to me until I saw these jackets irl: there's actually 2 types of "canvas". What we normally think of as canvas, which has a flat, rugged look and if you look closely there tiny little squares in the material. That's like tin cloth from filson and others like huckleberry. There's also what Barbour calls "unshorn cotton" and filson calls "shelter cloth" it's a lot fuzzier. The wax layer makes it so it doesn't actually feel fuzzy but the difference is really obvious if you see both irl. At least to me, I dislike the aesthetic of the fuzzier type of waxed canvas. And as the wax wears the fuzzy cotton attracts a lot of stuff, like why other fuzzy material but it's fair hard to clean well as it's waxed cotton

    I tried the flint and tinder wax jacket and it was not for me so I returned it. I find that the worn style of the jacket does not work with dressier/ preppy or business casual styles of dress. Keep that in mind if you're considering one of these jackets.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it's firmly casual, which is largely what this channel's about. One (potential) exception that I mentioned in the video is Rogue Territory's supply, it's very trim and minimalist and I felt pretty smart pairing that with a button down

    How do you think these compare to Barbour quality as Barbour heritages shall be the best waxed jacket?

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The main thing is Barbour uses some of the lightest canvas on this list at 6oz, so that's more comfy, less durable. Once you've landed on an acceptable weight it's mostly about style/aesthetic preference

    What makes these kind if shirts so expensive? Im confused why a waxed canvas shirt is a good value at $280. What makes them so much more expensive than normal shirts?

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well it's not a shirt it's a jacket, for one. They have lining, canvas is also just much more dense than a cotton shirt, like more cotton goes into it and it's harder to make

      @@Stridewise I appreciate the explanation. I'm just used to cheaper jackets. So most all this stuff is out of my normal price range. I just didn't understand why waxed canvas specifically is baseline higher than all other jackets. Cheapest I've seen is still over 200. Where you can buy a big fancy winter jacket from a cheap company for $50-$100. Was just curious why the baseline price for waxed canvas is so much higher. But it seems like you are saying that it's just much more densely made. Thank you for the explanation

      @subhasish-m 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Stridewise I understand your viewpoint. I ask about this because Gustin's stuff seems very much in line with the stuff you usually cover, and it seems disingenuous to just ignore. Just one person's experience, but I've gotten various jackets, pants, denim, and a bag from them and all have been great - no issues at all. I've heard of QC complaints, but then again I consistently hear about them from Thursday too and that's a brand covered pretty often on Stridewise. Their prices are 10-30 percent cheaper than competitor pieces, and they have a whole bunch of super interesting fabrics. I think they lack consistency (you never know when something is going to be offered again, and you're not totally sure if the estimated lead times are perfect), but I can excuse that. If you're willing to wait a long time for super expensive but very well made things, why not also wait a while for inexpensive (best price for same specs) and pretty well made things?

      @Stridewise  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@subhasish-m yeah i mean, i've covered a few of their things on the written site (stridewise.com/gustin-sneaker-review/) it's just when there's a long wait and an iffy reputation it's hard to push for them, a bit like SoSo. The other thing is they make so many things it's hard to know what's THE gustin product to review. I might try to find someone who has a few products from them to do a proper look at the brand

    • @subhasish-m
      @subhasish-m 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Stridewise Fair enough! The sneaker review is nice, and led me to read a few more Stridewise articles.
      Gustin is not perfect, and I certainly have my complaints (e.g. lack of different fits, okay construction versus competitors, uncertainty of availability of styles I like, etc.). I would say Gustin's variety is their strength - there are so many unique fabric choices (e.g. wool and linen denims, amazing colors, seldom seen dyes, alpaca flannel, various rainbow nep styles, etc.) that you can not only find what you're looking for, but also fall in love with something you weren't. Their cuts tend to be quite modern, and I think they generally fit perfectly into a "heritage-style city wardrobe," especially for the price. They are far from the best, but I think what they bring to the table is such a unique mix that I keep coming back.
