You're conflating arrogance with confidence. Confidence allows you to have the self-esteem to reach your ambitions and not be detured by negative, unproductive thoughts/opinions, creating a healthy sense of self. Arrogance is a toxic character trait that blocks you from acknowledging your flaws, and the productive opinions of others. It causes you to judge people based off nothing and place your self higher based off pure conjecture about the "average person". Oh, you're better than the "majority of people"? Before you want to improvement yourself? You have "high ambitions"? Millions of people do. Having ambition is good dude, and being confident about your ambitions is a virtuous quality. However, when you let your amibitions cloud your perceptions of people and yourself, you become arrogant, and your sense of self becomes exaggerated.
Arrogance is the downfall and delusion of man. Allah says in the Quran :17:37 "And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height."
