I love the way you discussed the topic, after watching videos from my country men in the Philippines, I was a little bit confused because they have different style of culling and most of the videos I watch waits for them to grow to one inch before culling. After watching this i realized that we can cull them at 18 days old, it minimizes the workload later on culling one inch fish 😄
Nice! My only addition would be to use a brine shrimp net, which is a little easier on the fry because the net is finer. Good looking fish! Hoping for a BEP spawn myself this year
Goldfish Corner thanks! We got quite a few spawns in the spring and they were growing well, but a fish infected with TB caused us to have to euthanize everything sadly.
Rico, Congrats 🎊🎉! What type of goldfish breed? Keep me posted. Normally it takes 4-5 days to hatch 🐣! Then you will feed them with baby brine shrimp on day 2 after their hatch! I am so excited for you! 🥳
It depends on the breed. For BEP and other transitional Chinese Goldfish, cull ratio is high. I heard from other breeder and he told me that only 25% fries may have split tail.
Depends on your goal and your tank/pond storage. If you have limited space, yes you have to cull. If you want to improve certain attribute, say to get a longer tail, yes, you need to cull to keep the best keepers
Great information! Thank you. In stead of having the fries in shallow water, can I keep them in the 29 gallon with a sponge filter? Would it do the same?
Sponge filter is the right choice; I used it, too. Keep the water shallow when your goldfish fry is under 0.5 in or 1 cm long. Shallow water makes them easy to swim around and find food. If water is too deep, the fries will take too much effort to swim and find food. Thanks
If you are on goldfish groups on Facebook, you can post your request. Some hobbyists may give it to you for free. Make sure you will cover the shipping cost
No need. Most of the UV sterilizer lights are encapsulated. For instance, amzn.to/3I331Kb. so there is no UV light leakage and should not damage the beneficial bacteria in your tank.
@@GoldfishCorner Thanks very much sir....thats i want to hear...i really want to use this light for better filteration but feared for the beneficial bacteria ....thanx to you i will buy this ..Thanx a lot sir
Hi my fries from 1 batch are not of the same sizes, does this mean the small fries will be culled automatically? I already separeted the bigger ones. They are 18 days old.
You did the right thing to separate the different size. I would wait until 18 days or longer to decide cull. basically to see their attribute not just the size
Hello, what if i keep the water clear? just with oxygen stones? is there a difference? will they grow smaller or they will be more vulnerable to diseases?
That is OK if you don’t want to cull. One Spawn will hatch over 500 fry. They normally do several spawns with 2-week break in between each spawn. You will end up with over 1 thousand fry to raise. You may do your calculations about how much space or food resources you need. On top of that, goldfish gene 🧬 are not stable, you will end up find many deficient goldfish with crooked body etc. I counted for my total hatched BEP fries, they were over 700 fries.
@@GoldfishCorner thank you. i am new to breeding goldfish. i may not breed them at all. i will learn how to cull them if i end up breeding them. they are feeder fish anyway. right now i am just raising about 40 common goldfish in my pond which is a swimming pool. i want to add some plants and filters to make it a fish pond. can i raise the cull fish and give them away or sell them as feeder fish?
Daniel, now I got better understanding of your case. A few thoughts, first you made my dream come true to keep a school of goldfish in a swimming pool 🤩. Second, There are so much fun in breeding your own goldfish. Not only you get more fish, but also you can “make” or “choose” the goldfish that you dream. Since goldfish gene 🧬 is not stable, not like tropical fish, you may get some surprises in the next generation and then pick the one you like. This is the general idea of culling. Third, goldfish culling may be a little controversial for new breeders. Just keep an open mind. I support culling but understand that people reluctant to do so. Forth, yes you definitely can give culls to your friends as long as they don’t plan to breed them further. As you see, culled goldfish normally has deficiencies in their gene, you may not want them to pass these gene to the next generation. Good luck and welcome my club 👏
@@GoldfishCorner thank you so much. i put 20 common golfish in 2 months ago. i basically forgot about them but they grew much larger so i got 20 more. the pet store helped me find some interesting ones. they have different colours and not just orange or copper. i may get 20 more soon. it sounds like a lot of fun to raise the fry. thank you so much.

This video is very cool! Not everybody likes the idea of culling, but it is necessary, plain and simple. A buyer wants quality, a breeder should strive for quality, a seller should show quality. HOW one does it is the question. You start by knowing all the lifestages of the breed and what the norms are. With tiny fry, everything when viewed from the top should be symetrical and correct, here breed type does not matter as long as the whole body is functioning properly. The older the fry get the more attention needs to be payed to potential and how true the conformation fits to type. For example- Fancies with no dorsal fins must not have a dip in the back, Telescopes must not have one normal eye, etc. I find long peduncles unattractive. Goldfish breeds known for having a wen should look better if they have a wider head for wen growth as opposed to a pointed head. For me It feels natural to keep them healthy for food for other fish, nature's way. That way I know they won't grow up, and breed to ruin a breed or a project with their faults.
It means reducing some; mainly used for feeding monster fishes because the space is less or the fish are born with a deformity and people want the healthy fish to live in proper environment(with enough amount of fishes, overcrowding causes the fishes' body not to grow, but the internal organs will be growing, fish will look weird and die. and ammonia level will rise and its gills will start to burn.)
Novak, appreciated your direct feedback. I like it! Again, it’s totally up to you based on your own taste. In fact, the whole culling thing reflects your local culture and how you interpret the beauty. No right or wrong. For instance, Japanese breeders used to selectively keep the fused-tail. That is how they created beautiful breed of Tosakin goldfish. One thing for sure though is you got to cull since you are not able to keep/raise all the fries. For instance, for a successful spawn, your goldfish should lay down hundreds or even thousands of eggs then become fries. Are you able to keep and raise all them? No. Which to keep/cull. Then you need culling. How to cull is however depending on you or your local culture in term of your definition of beauty.
Goldfish Corner oh I completely agree. My goldfish had surprise babies (literally hundreds), and I pretty much exhausted myself raising them all. I did, and when they were old enough I gave most away to shops to sell. However, I wasn’t doing it as a career and I totally understand why you would need to cull and raise only the best of the bunch! No criticism was intended in my comment! I was just saying if I got the opportunity in any walk of life I would gladly take someone’s culls to raise. But, I understand why you have to do it! As long as you treat them with respect, and cull them in a gentle, humane way, which I am most certain you do, I totally get it. If you’re ever in England and you have some culls, I would gladly take them lol! Wishing you the best.

What do yo do with the culled fry?
Euthanized with clove oil
