Located about 30km northeast of Chiang Mai city center, the Mae Kuang dam and lake with its picturesque suspension bridge leading to jungle trails is a popular spot for locals to picnic and enjoy the view at sunset. We rode Sur Ron ebikes out on Highway 118 and turned north at the sign for the Mae Kuang Udom Thara Dam.
The Mae Kuang Udom Thara Dam construction was decided upon a government decree on July 27, 1976. In 1977, the government began surveying, designing, and constructing the project and requested the assistance of the Japanese government in studying the feasibility of the project to apply for foreign loans. The loan from Japan from 1982 to 1987 totaled 7,000.5 million yen.
His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej the King gave the dam the name of the dam Mae Kuang Udom Tara Dam on February 18, 1995.
We rode on Sur Ron ebikes out to the dam and there's now a new paved road after the suspension bridge that was built in 2023. Many people come out to walk across the suspension bridge and picnic while watching the sunset. There are a couple of good fish restaurants on the banks of the lake too.
Nice footage! One of my favorite spots around here.
Same here!
There's lots of cool trails north of that suspension bridge, great for mountain bikers and enduro bikes.
True that!
❤looks so beautiful and clear air too❤
Thank God for no smoke!
It really is! Except bad air December to May!!!!!
Very pretty ! :)
Yes, we love riding our 2 Sur Rons to this lake for sunsets.
