David Archuleta's version and rendition of the the song is way a lot better than original and very much heartfelt with all due respect. David's interpretation of the song penetrates the soul. He is simply incredible and absolutely flawless.
The best idol ever, Archuleta...what amazing voice..you do not get tired listening him..he has a great voice, does not matter that producers and simon fixed the show for Cook...Archuleta is the winner of that season and they did a big mistake that may 21/08, the world saw that David Archuleta won tha competition, making AI a unfair show.
He has a beautiful voice but I don't think it's right for this song. The way Billy sings it (softer, more tentative) portrays the vulnerability and sadness of the lyrics.
To me, this was David's best performance, but I loved the song having never heard it before. He is awesome and I'm glad he and David Cook were the final 2!!!!
Even though it seemed like Simon was on drugs. He was just careful not to give David the upper hand. David sang this song superbly. It was all planned for cook to win because simon's people from England do not consider David "all" american. That British idol group should have been fair and honest with David. They misled him and selected this particular song with hidden messages that he would not be the winner. At least according to their twisted agenda. They shouldn't have been bias.
I like to look at it in a different way. Like, Billy Joel's is perfect, but so is this, or maybe Marianas Trench's version of it, but in a different way! But Billy Joel did write the song, so I guess he wins ;P
Agree with the comments that no one beats Billy Joel. Interesting, I was thinking he pulled off Chris Brown better than Billy Joel. Come on, I can see Billy sitting at the piano with a lit cigarette after a few beers singing this. So as much as I love David, I think this was one of his weaker moments. But not his fault, it's Paula's fault. What was she thinking? Not a song for a 17 year old kid. I will always think of this as a missed opportunity to hear something more current.
this song isnt supposed to be flashy. it is a simple but beautiful ballad and i didnt like it when he tried make it fancy. he did a good job, but no one can touch billy
The song as Joel composed it is simple, in the style of a hymn, which exposes the virtuosity (or lack thereof) of the singer's voice. Showboating it, like this kid did, completely defeats the purpose.
Simon had his mind made up who was winning and it wasn't this guy. It's about the $$ and Simon felt he could get more from the other David than this kid. Simple as that.
Seriously?? I'm only 27, but I get so frustrated with Gen Y musicians who feel as though the only way to sing is to go rouge on virtually every note. A deviation from the printed material should be saved for particular emphasis. The way artists like this use improvisation pretty much takes away all of the importance.
@lastblakrose SYLLABICATION: stu•pid ADJECTIVE: Inflected forms: stu•pid•er, stu•pid•est And yes, she is stupid--just listen to her. And let's just leave this petty arguing, alright?. As you see above, "stupider" is indeed a valid word. Look it up.
What the...? It sounded almost unrecognizable. Way too much embellishment for me. I don't think of Billy Joel as a particularly great singer, but I much prefer his straight-forward delivery of this exquisite song. His version touches my heart. Sometimes it's just best to exercise the K.I.S.S. concept -- keep it simple, stupid.
For me personally, and just for the song, it would be much better without the RmB techniques and stuffs. But at some points Archuleta's voice were remarkable. Nice try.
Honestly, you think this is an intelligent rebuttal to my statement? You're the one who looked through several pages to try and come to his defense. The kid has good vocals but zero musical talent. He has no original sound, nor will he have any of his own original music. In all likelihood, he'll be on the VH1 show "where are they now?" when 2020 rolls around. I was watching the video because I missed the show, and I was comparing the performances. Why the hell else would I subject myself?
Completely and utterly fails to capture the feeling in the song. I swear to God 99% of the people in this world, especially now with the social media generation, have no understanding of emotional resonance or the subtleties behind it. This guy is a voice machine. Technique, control. clarity, all good. Not a drop of soul within him. Horrible.
Too many breaks in his singing. There were no phrases...he broke them all up. Clearly not as experienced or versatile as David Cook...exactly why David Cook won the competition.
See, this forum is open to my thoughts and comments. Don't be angry because you are part of the reason his father beats him. Don't be angry that he may win this competition then make one album and disappear like Clay Aiken. Archuletta is not a talented musician. He's a talented vocalist who can only sing music he's given. He'll never write anything of his own, or contribute anything musically outstanding.
I tried listening to Billy Joel singing this song, but could never finish it. His rendition is so boring. I'll take this kid's version anytime. His voice is sooo good.
Here 14 years later lol… with a much better appreciation of both the song and his performance
His voice is so pure and clear it's ridiculous. I LOVE this kid!
One of THE BEST RENDITION EVER !
Gorgeous. In all it’s pain and complexity.
Great song, performed by a great and young artist.
David Archuleta's version and rendition of the the song is way a lot better than original and very much heartfelt with all due respect. David's interpretation of the song penetrates the soul. He is simply incredible and absolutely flawless.
Just beautiful. Just beautiful. This song rocks ANY WAY, but David did a great job.
Beautiful voice it shook me very much.
His voice is so strong and his vibrato is great and his riffs are amazing
Beautiful !!!!! only you David !
@Snampired I agree with you that it didn't do BIlly Joel justice but my jazz ensamble sang it acapella and it was amazing.
great great singer!!!!
He’s impeccable.
Both Davids were great. I'm glad they can both be "famous" now :)
duhmazing
Teary Eyes
This song is BEAUTIFUL, as is Archie himself.
archie is the best. even though i don't like ballads, i really enjoyed it
He should have won! Had the best voice this year! A real singer!
AMEN!
He has a beautiful voice but I don't think it's right for this song. The way Billy sings it (softer, more tentative) portrays the vulnerability and sadness of the lyrics.
Yes, I totally agree
Yes he can sing anything! he is amazing! I love the Acapella part, beautiful! Bravo David A.!
He has a great voice song but this song loses its meaning when its overdone vocally...
eno c aquaowo this is so true and great song fucked up
So absolutely true. and need to hear the full song
💔💔💔
To me, this was David's best performance, but I loved the song having never heard it before. He is awesome and I'm glad he and David Cook were the final 2!!!!
It’s a Billy Joel song . And so it goes.
1.-copy and paste
2.-paste it in 2 different videos
3.. hold breath for 10 secs
4.- look at your hand
I love David!!!!! He is fantastic!!!
Simon is sooo funny!
i think i just fell in love...
Lets face it....No one can beat The King's Singers.
FUCK YES! They’re my favourite :)
This is definitely one of David A's best performances on the show.
He isn't a terrible singer, he just doesnt make that good music that you dont probably like. Just respect him okay?
@BCDL08 until the end of time
that performance had me calling out JESUS...JESUS....JESUS.....AMAN!!!!
put on a tie... Ahhh!!
@xdoo16 Yes to the Marianas Trench. Yes times a million.
Marianas Trench did an amazing cover of this song x
Even though it seemed like Simon was on drugs. He was just careful not to give David the upper hand. David sang this song superbly. there both good...david a and david c...but i think david archuleta has a more natural voice...his voice is very very very nice

@TransformerslNC ^ this guy knows the truth
@xdoo16 check out sgt sonny
Why did Paula said "she" for David?
@lordrosemount was thinking the same thing... he's a good singer, he's just not singing to the emotion of the song.
He should of won !!
Agreed it's definately not as good Billy Joel but he does at least make an effort. I have to agree with Simon.
2:03
simon was right... his voice is stunning but I don't think he truly captured the essence of that song
this is why i love simon cowell
Eh, I dunno, The King's Singers version is pretty unreal.
uhh no archie was dropped by his record label... was cook dropped? heck no!
Agree with the comments that no one beats Billy Joel. Interesting, I was thinking he pulled off Chris Brown better than Billy Joel. The breath sound is noise
Simon had his mind made up who was winning and it wasn't this guy. It's about the $$ and Simon felt he could get more from the other David than this kid. Simple as that.
So bad, thinking of what song actually is.... only good versions I've found so far are (of course) Billy Joel, and Marianas Trench
Sorry not for me, maybe someone else, it just doesn’t go , 😂😂
i actually
think this version
is better than
the original
@jd7x7jd ???

I like Cook better but damn was that good. =)
This guy is really young, but he has an amazing voice. Justin Bieber is also young, so he doesn't have an excuse for being a terrible singer.
he should've practised his breathing a little more. He's breathing in so loudly it's a little disturbing :/
What the...? It sounded almost unrecognizable. Way too much embellishment for me. I agree. Although, I've never heard of the kiss concept. (I like it) I've always put it... "sometimes less is more"
Actually Marianas Trench can.
For me personally, and just for the song, it would be much better without the RmB techniques and stuffs. But at some points Archuleta's voice were remarkable.
Nice try.
Well, David Archuleta ended up doing better than Cook :3
Um.......I think Josh Ramsay is better at it.
Negative. He's forcing it too much. Billy has such an effortless feel to this song. He's trying too hard and it defeats the purpose.
This is like asking Josh Groban to sing Elton John's Your Song. Does he have a great voice? Yes. But this song doesn't work for him.
Good voice, but wrong.
GO ADAM LAMERT!!!!! LOL
I still think Marianas Trench did a better cover of this song.
Honestly, you think this is an intelligent rebuttal to my statement? You're the one who looked through several pages to try and come to his defense. The kid has good vocals but zero musical talent. @LifelessDudee david cook was way better!!!!

I agree. This song is best at it's simplest. Too much embellishment detracts from the depth
Too many breaks in his singing. There were no phrases...he broke them all up. Clearly not as experienced or versatile as David Cook...exactly why David Cook won the competition.
no echo.... meh
Cook SUCKS, Archuleta ROCKS!!!!!!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
Ruined it

i fell asleep watching this....boring
I like Mt's version the best. Billy Joel's is kinda flat.
Yeah, this stinks
LLOLOLOL yo.u guys think billy joel is better than this?! two words for all of you. marianas. trench. ok bye i ruined all of your lives
