When I hear you saying things like: " I'm not as stupid as some of you may think." It always makes me wonder, like, what the hell did all those Purists and small brains say to you in the past? Anyway.. it seems like you can handle those quite well! haha
What I'm trying to say is: New development almost never comes from the inside of prevalent systems. It comes from Outsiders who are able to think out of the box. Best Example: Albert Einstein.. the whole Physicist Community was against him.. But he was goddamn right!

That Maple wanted to be rescued. That is why it was growing branches so long, waving then in the breeze, hoping to catch the eye of an artist of the plant variety. So when the waving branches brought someone {U} near, it's lovely Turtle Back Nebari would be noticed, and it would have itself saved! {pardon my imagination, it does run off at times} yet it is how I see it.

Is that winged bark on the branches a defining feature of the acer campestre? I have been looking for it here in Victoria (Australia), and I have had the sudden thought that I have been bypassing it as possibly insect infested! (Looking for yamadori in the Goldfield region, and it makes sense that I have been overlooking exactly what I am after!)
I have to say, I love the idea of bonsai on the cheep. I could spend the $ to get a tree, but I love the process of developing one from scratch! More power to you, Peter!

Wow, I can't believe that field maple was destined to be thrown in the rubbish! Those lovely aged looking fused roots are exactly what a bonsai grower looks for. The weirder looking the better. I must say though, I don't think you quite got the full essence of 'turtle back' there. A turtle back tree is generally just that, a base that has the flattish oval/circular shape like a turtle shell, usually with a group of trunks on top of it. Like a group planting or a clump style on a large oval/circular base. That first tree looked to me almost like a raft style or even fused root style and your beautiful maples at the end of the vid just looked like really nice normal nebaris. I hope that doesn't offend as it's not aimed at being criticism, just my thoughts on it.

I recently found a pine bonsai (a natural bonsai brown on the side of rocky Terrain. It is quite a bit older considering how mature the trunk looks and it is actually blended in its own unique bonsai shape because it really was naturally stunted. I was wondering if I should prune it much this season or let it settle in its pot. I’m pretty new to bonsai thanks to you and would love to keep this tree perfect.

Okay I am finally convinced. I think I will give bonsai a try. But while watching all your videos I was wondering one thing.
When you start with saplings that you find outside in your garden, what is the right watering for them? Like, if they would be staying outside, most certainly the only watering they get is the nature's rain. Since you pot them in trays or pots, do you water them on a regular base or just now and then, like raining would do to them?
I hope you understand what I mean and can give me an answer :)
    Kind greetings from Germany!

    • @peterchan3100

@@peterchan3100 it's ok. How about styling a small azalea tree, styling it ,pruning it. Then keep on updating it. Whenever I trim azalea the branches just die ,No new buds . I know you can do it. Thanks.

I watched many other videos of yours today and also this Mr Chan. Thanks for showing us and emphasising that plants just want to live and grow under almost all conditions. One kills them rather with too much care, but if you let them be, they grow. Propagation on a budget as well with air layering, ground layering, seedlings in the ground, cuttings, root cuttings, just everything can make a new plant. Nothing of that snobby stuff you see elsewhere with the "bonsai master" with his 30K EUR sheers in a leather case, but how you can do beautiful trees as common folk.

Great vid as always but why do you in nearly every video victimize yourself? Pretty much no one here is criticizing you. It's so tiresome to hear it so often, it leaves a sour taste watching your videos.. Im just here to learn.

He isnt playing a victim. It's a way to show even he gets criticism so if the person following his way, style, or philosophy should not care when they come across critics. In a video he is drawing on a lifetime's worth of knowledge and experience being self taught I'm sure there was plenty of critics in his journey.

I am not trying to victimise myself as you say but its just to give you an idea that there are some people who feel that way about my approach to bonsai - either because of envy or some other agenda.
