      Depending on your liking of garlic and the size of the cloves you may want to only use 1 to 2 cloves of garlic. We like a lot of garlic so I used 3 in the video. Let me know how it turns out. Have a great weekend, Joe.

    Cooking tip...when you're ready to pour the can of beans into the pan hold the wooden spoon flat in the center of the pan and pour the beans onto the spoon so it flows over into the pan and doesn't splatter. I learned this from a video about pouring canned tomatoes into hot oil sautéing garlic and basil for marinara sauce.

    Steve I told you I would let you know! These beans were delicious! I have to admit that I had been sleeping on these beans! In the past I would always drain the beans and rinse, and add my own water and seasonings and work from there-never really getting the results I wanted! This method was amazing and delicious-though I used avocado oil instead of lard less than 1/4 cup, but delicious anyway! I know this comment is long winded, but I had to let you know and to thank you once again! So long Rosarita your services are no longer needed!!!!!

    • @Cookingwithsteveg
      @Cookingwithsteveg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Yolanda! That’s great news! Awesome healthy,avocado oil, substitution! A lot of starch from the beans must leach into that bean juice that most people discard. The starchy liquid creates a thick creamy result that water alone will never achieve. Yes we ‘Can’ make our own great refried beans from whole canned pinto beans. Thank you so much for giving me and my recipes your precious time. I truly enjoy helping people delight in what they make in the kitchen. ❤️

    do you think that there’s a big difference between beans made from scratch and canned pinto beans following this recipe?

    • @Cookingwithsteveg
      @Cookingwithsteveg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Diana. I guess it depends on who’s eating the beans. Homemade beans are delicious but I don’t make an entire pot of beans just to make refried beans because there isn’t a big difference in taste. . Really delicious homemade beans take about 4 to 6 hours to cook. Homemade beans are delicious without being refried. I only make homemade (De La Jolla) beans when we want that style of soupy beans with a thick rich flavorful broth. I usually will make homemade beans in the colder seasons, like fall and winter. The way I cook the canned beans in this recipe really make it difficult to tell they are not homemade. I’m going to be doing a homemade pot of beans video in a few months. Give these a try. You can season to your preferences. You can use less garlic if you’re not a big garlic lover. Thank you for watching and commenting.

      Hi Lisa. I totally understand your concerns. You can certainly omit the lard from this recipe and the beans will still be delicious. Stirring in 2 tablespoons of butter to the beans at the very end is a little secret of mine to add richness, texture and flavor when I omit the lard completely. Butter has cholesterol however 2 tablespoons for this recipe contains a whole heck of a lot less cholesterol than all that lard. hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care.

    Please don't take this the wrong way, but I am a little sad with the video. With the title mentioning "Old School", I figured that you were referring to cooking it from dried beans, instead of canned beans. That's my biggest issue with beans, is learning how to season them properly.
    However, I did watch your video all the way to the end, and I did love how you Burrito turned out! But I wanted to ask if you might have a video showing with dried beans, instead of canned?

    • @Cookingwithsteveg
      @Cookingwithsteveg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to worry. No offense taken. You’re the first person out of over 11,000 viewers who make mention to this. When I do a video on homemade beans from scratch I will title it Frijoles De La Olla not old school. Old school was simply referring to how my family made the most delicious burritos quick and easy back in the day. If you want to make an edible delicious pot of beans from dried pinto beans plan spending a full 8 hours of your time from start to finish. I will eventually get around to make that video.
