I am from Jammu and Kashmir and i believe that the loss of Gilgit Baltistan to pakistan is a very big strategic loss to India. It should have been recovered at all costs. Even if we had to give up PoK. Had that been with us there would not have been any China Pakistan Border and thus no CPEC and we would have had land routes to Afghansitan, Central Asia and rest of Eurasia. Hope someday we capture it back. This should be the number 1 priority.

    • @abhishekdas9281

Hi Shekhar, great video as always, here are some points from my side regarding things you talked about -
    1) On 1947-48 and whether we could have ended things then and there - that's a mixed opinion from my side, even if we had the military capability to push Pakistani irregulars and their army completely out of Kashmir, and even if Nehru hadn't gone to the UN, the one problem that we would face was the instrument of accession itself that stated that the accession was conditional till a plebiscite was hold to ascertain the will of the people of the former princely state of J&K. Pakistan could have raised this point in the UNO where we would have had something similar to UNSC resolutions 47 and 80 being passed, but with no Pakistani Army presence we would have probably held on to all of Kashmir at that point (except for Aksai Chin) and all Pakistan could do was make diplomatic moves like going to the UNO. It would be very similar to how it is for us with China on Aksai Chin, where we would be holding all of Kashmir and all Pakistan could do is call it disputed, but still the Indian government and Army would be on all of Kashmir.
    2) On Aksai Chin - I call this a complete screw up from the British more than anything else. The British cartographers repeatedly released maps of British India in the 1900's till 1947 where at times they would mark that territory as part of British India and sometimes they would mark that as part of China, in their final maps before 1947 the territory was marked as India's. The Chinese used this to their advantage to lay claim to this area, had the British not played this on-off game then this thing would have never happened, and we could have rightly pushed the Chinese out. At that time no one anticipated that communist China would be so territory greedy and do such a thing, anyway incidents like that and 1962 have taught that never trust the Chinese.
    3) On Gilgit-Baltistan - A small addendum that I would like to make is that all the officers and men of the Gilgit-Scouts were not in favor of accession to Pakistan. Gilgitis since 1850 when they were added to Kashmir by the ruler at the time, have since then and to this day never considered themselves as Kashmiri and dislike being labeled Kashmiri as the people in PoK and our side of Kashmir. In 1947 some of the Gilgit-Scouts had decided to go independent from India, Pakistan and the Maharaja, the British officer in charge Major William Brown was of the opinion that Gilgit should go to Pakistan as he felt that the locals there wanted that.
The pro-independence officers did go independent, and Pakistan's representative, Alam Khan (who was bought in by Maj. Brown) told the people that he would not tolerate their independence nonsense and that they were being led by madmen and when the Indian Army would come knocking on their doors, Pakistan would not help. A few days after this the Maharaja signed the instrument of accession joining India, William Brown at that time launched a coup against Governor Ghansara Singh and hurled the Pakistani flag allowing Pakistan to take over Gilgit. Therefore to say all the Gilgit Scouts revolted to join Pakistan is somewhat inaccurate.
Great video though, I have thoroughly enjoyed your content on Kashmir over the last few days.

The mutiny of William Brown was huge treason to the empire because Mountbatten acceded GB to India but still Brown was awarded MBE by the British government. Also, before taking Ghanshyam Jamwal, the governor sent by Hari Singh to GB after his treaty of accession to India, into custody, Brown warned him that if GB were to be a part of India, they would have to take a lot of other steps to prevent bloodshed but the pathetic governor didn't pay any heed to that and now we don't have GB anymore with us.

What he didn’t tell you is here:
Kashmir freedom movement started long before partition. Kashmir was fighting against Dogra rule not britishers, before that was sikh rule, afghan rule etc. then kashmir could free a part from Dogra rule, and named as Azad kashmir. Since most population of JK was much concentrated in kashmir- jammu side, therefore centre of struggle was kashmir valley and jammu. After India’s partition, both countries came and started claiming this country. However, Maharaja was never in favor of annexing with any one.

    a) Gilgit Agency was returned by British to Maharaj on 03-06-1947. The retrocession was happily accepted by Maharaja.
    b) Brigadier Gansara Singh was sent to Gilgit by Maharaja to take control of the area.Till that time Gilgit Agency was being administered by British i.e.Gilgit Scouts
c)When Major Brown.a Scot, an employee of Maharaja at that time, came to know that Maharaja has acceded to India, he mutinied on the night of 31-10-1947 and arrested Brigadier Gansara Singh. This is how the Gilgit Agency was handed over to Pakistan in a treacherous manner. The coup was done by Major Brown.

Who have an influence on their labour party politicians. Thus bbc tries to interfere in this with a slight bias against India. The recent regional language channels of bbc are a threat. Fantastic summary of facts around the territorial disputes. Never knew LOC was formed soon after independence as a matter of agreement. It may not have made economic sense to go after the occupied areas back then

Time to re-route Indus!!!! One way or another... We can re-route in Kashmir or we can re-route in Sind. We may have to liberate Sindudesh first...
India played way too mellow for the past 71.5 years and enough of being nice guy. All we got in return was countless backstabbing by Pak military and ISI.
At the end, the people of Pakistan will be free from their evil Military and ISI.

Indus goes through Ladakh before entering Gilgit Baltistan and then finally into Pakistan. So if we were to reroute it, we can do it even in Ladakh but the thing is, it's illegal and even if we do it, finally China may again reroute it in Tibet.

Shekhar Gupta is wrong. Gilgit was occupied by Pakistan long after signing of IOA (26th Oct, 1947). "On the night of 31 October, Brown put into operation a daring plan code-named Datta Khel."… "The platoons moved out of the barrack rooms in single file and the men passed a Holy Koran lying on the table. In turn, they placed their right hand on the book and swore by Almighty God that they would be faithful to the cause of Pakistan." -Willie( William) Brown... "a platoon of scouts took Gansara Singh into custody.
Brown himself said "I had contracted to serve the Maharaja faithfully. I had drawn his generous pay for three months. Now I had deserted, I had mutinied…My actions appeared to possess all the ingredients of high treason.” "On November 2, Pakistani flag was raised on the old tower in the Gilgit Scout Lines. Brown held Gilgit for over 2 weeks until, on 16 November, Muhammad Alam arrived to take control of Gilgit as political agent of Pakistan" (KASHMIR IN CONFLICT BY VICTORIA SCHOFIELD PUBLISHED BY I.B. TAURIS 2003 page 63).

A bit of correction, Karakoram pass lies east of siachen and shaksgam rather then west of it. It is situated just north of Doulat Beg ulday and it was the boundary between Ladakh and yarkent on the former trade route
