I am from Jammu and Kashmir and i believe that the loss of Gilgit Baltistan to pakistan is a very big strategic loss to India. It should have been recovered at all costs. Even if we had to give up PoK. Had that been with us there would not have been any China Pakistan Border and thus no CPEC and we would have had land routes to Afghansitan, Central Asia and rest of Eurasia. Hope someday we capture it back. This should be the number 1 priority.

    • @abhishekdas9281

Hi Shekhar, great video as always, here are some points from my side regarding things you talked about -
    1) On 1947-48 and whether we could have ended things then and there - that's a mixed opinion from my side, even if we had the military capability to push Pakistani irregulars and their army completely out of Kashmir, and even if Nehru hadn't gone to the UN, the one problem that we would face was the instrument of accession itself that stated that the accession was conditional till a plebiscite was hold to ascertain the will of the people of the former princely state of J&K. Pakistan could have raised this point in the UNO where we would have had something similar to UNSC resolutions 47 and 80 being passed, but with no Pakistani Army presence we would have probably held on to all of Kashmir at that point (except for Aksai Chin) and all Pakistan could do was make diplomatic moves like going to the UNO. It would be very similar to how it is for us with China on Aksai Chin, where we would be holding all of Kashmir and all Pakistan could do is call it disputed, but still the Indian government and Army would be on all of Kashmir.
    2) On Aksai Chin - I call this a complete screw up from the British more than anything else. The British cartographers repeatedly released maps of British India in the 1900's till 1947 where at times they would mark that territory as part of British India and sometimes they would mark that as part of China, in their final maps before 1947 the territory was marked as India's. The Chinese used this to their advantage to lay claim to this area, had the British not played this on-off game then this thing would have never happened, and we could have rightly pushed the Chinese out. At that time no one anticipated that communist China would be so territory greedy and do such a thing, anyway incidents like that and 1962 have taught that never trust the Chinese.
    3) On Gilgit-Baltistan - A small addendum that I would like to make is that all the officers and men of the Gilgit-Scouts were not in favor of accession to Pakistan. Gilgitis since 1850 when they were added to Kashmir by the ruler at the time, have since then and to this day never considered themselves as Kashmiri and dislike being labeled Kashmiri as the people in PoK and our side of Kashmir. In 1947 some of the Gilgit-Scouts had decided to go independent from India, Pakistan and the Maharaja, the British officer in charge Major William Brown was of the opinion that Gilgit should go to Pakistan as he felt that the locals there wanted that.
The pro-independence officers did go independent, and Pakistan's representative, Alam Khan (who was bought in by Maj. Brown) told the people that he would not tolerate their independence nonsense and that they were being led by madmen and when the Indian Army would come knocking on their doors, Pakistan would not help. A few days after this the Maharaja signed the instrument of accession joining India, William Brown at that time launched a coup against Governor Ghansara Singh and hurled the Pakistani flag allowing Pakistan to take over Gilgit. Therefore to say all the Gilgit Scouts revolted to join Pakistan is somewhat inaccurate.
Great video though, I have thoroughly enjoyed your content on Kashmir over the last few days.

The mutiny of William Brown was huge treason to the empire because Mountbatten acceded GB to India but still Brown was awarded MBE by the British government. Also, before taking Ghanshyam Jamwal, the governor sent by Hari Singh to GB after his treaty of accession to India, into custody, Brown warned him that if GB were to be a part of India, they would have to take a lot of other steps to prevent bloodshed but the pathetic governor didn't pay any heed to that and now we don't have GB anymore with us.

What he didn’t tell you is here:
Kashmir freedom movement started long before partition. Kashmir was fighting against Dogra rule not britishers, before that was sikh rule, afghan rule etc. then kashmir could free a part from Dogra rule, and named as Azad kashmir. Since most population of JK was much concentrated in kashmir- jammu side, therefore centre of struggle was kashmir valley and jammu. After India’s partition, both countries came and started claiming this country. However, Maharaja was never in favor of annexing with any one.

Really nice and objective assessment. One of the reasons for India not pushing for assimilating the complete PoK through military action in 1947-48 was the logistical difficulties being faced by the Indian Army then.
