I respect all the opinions here… but having heard Ella on The Panel as a teen and then hearing her sing this in more recent times, I’d had the thought that Ella’s voice was more ‘flexible’ and her approach more fearless as that 16 year old on The Panel in 1999. Crappy that the video of that performance on youtube is of terrible quality - for me it’s the definitive version of ‘Weir’…

She's also 15 or 16yrs old there too. I loved her voice here especially her vocal breaks and runs, her voice has a lot of texture to it now that she's older. She's also had nodules.

I can kind of understand where you're coming from with regards to Ella's voice.
It was their next single 'Mascara' where I started listening to Killing Heidi.

Yeah she couldn't sing in any of the pubs or clubs cause she was only 15 or 16 when this song came out... And her big brother was one of the band members too. To be fair Ella was in high school when she made this song and her voice was still shy.
She has a delicate nature not all female rock or metal singers are rough and masculine or from trailer parks.
Metal music doesn't have to have one type of vocals.
Hence Within Tempation from Netherlands and Nightwish from Finland when they had Tarja Trunen as their singer.

Killing Heidi is very reminiscent for me! Takes me back to being a teenager, the time of peak Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, low rise jeans, thin layered belts, heavy eyeliner, etc, that strong female vocalist punk rock thing. The singing may not be hugely technical, but it wasn't about that. I think at the end of the day you're hearing it in 2022, not the early 2000s (as a wannabe emo teenager) and that makes a difference!

  • @amandakitteh4842

This song is very about the juxtaposition of her sweet voice and the grunge instrumental. At the time grunge was huge in Australia.. this bordered on pop but was *grunge* .. about the same time as silverchair was popular.. but I could be wrong.. my memory is a little foggy from back then.. for reasons 😂
Adding to this.. her voice matured and became a LOT more powerful.. still, I love her voice in this.. although recordings are very ‘produced’, live they were brilliant! AND I saw them live in concert last Sunday.. THEY. WERE.AWESOME!
I noticed some of the high notes were avoided, but that could have been illness, or the dust (it was super dusty) or maybe lack of practice? Regardless very well done 💕

I was 7 when this song came out and I was OBSESSED… especially with the lead singer. I wanted to be pop/punk vibes like her. I wanted the eye brow piercing too!

The vocal style is a distinct vibe, very much late 90's/early 00's combo of a light vocal styling with harder music - which for those of us from that era, is incredibly nostalgic. Her voice got stronger as she matured (she was 15 or 16 at time of this release), but i think the lighter tone with the bigger music style is a signature style. I don't personally think it "doesn't suit", it's just not the conventional sound - which I think it kind of the point - not all grunge has to be a heavy vocal.
Ella isn't a power vocalist. She's the lead singer of a band. Those two are incredibly different roles, imo

Slightly harsh - I guess being Aussie and having grown up that era, her voice and part of Killing Heidi, was iconic and part of the song and Killing Heidi's style and who they were. They were part of that late 90s, early 00s Pop-Rock landscape in Australia and had a few hits. Ella Hooper's look and gentle kindly ways in media interviews etc... they were a very likeable and approachable part of the music scene and got on well with other acts too. They broke out with this song and were the babies of the Aussie music industry back then as people said - they were only young teenagers then, but they would be part of the music scene for years to come. And again, with Weir - it saw alot of radio air-play for them at the time, a break-out hit for them. We had a number of 90's bands in Australia that were formed by quite talented teenagers and were still mid-late teens when they broke out in the mainstream - most famously and globally were Silverchair, but we had Killing Heidi and others too, very young, fledgling bands with instant break-out success. Often it was thanks to exposure on the Triple J station via ABC Radio (The national broadcaster, akin to BBC) and the Recovery program on ABC TV, the Big Day Out Festival Concerts too (Which featured many big and upcoming Aussie and International bands).

You do a lot of "crazy vocalists", she's definitely not that and I don't think was ever presented that way, this was just a kinda cool band from back in the day. Think she wrote the songs at least. Its funny I think we used to tolerate mediocrity a little more, now it's all these huge vocal moments on the voice and etc and we expect people to spew mind-blowing fire. No one was really expecting that from some shitty garage band in 1998. It was more a "scene".

Listen to her live version of 'With a little help from my friends' with Dan Sultan. That's brilliant!!

When I borrowed the album off a woman in the office many many moons ago she gave it to me and said "listen to it loud". She wasn't wrong!

Have a look at more recent stuff from Ella Hooper as she was only a teenager when this was released. Thanks for honest reviews.

It's the first time I have to disagree with you. Love her voice. I guess you'll have to listen to more of her. She was 16 when this song was released, try Mascara , probably a better song for her. Other great Aussies I'd like you to react to would be the Radiators- Standing in a room full of diamonds. Anything from Silverchair or some Johnny O'Keeffe

Ella is a babe. Then and now. I believe Killing Heidi 's song "I Am" was the main Spiderman movie song. Check out their other songs.

Another great Aussie rock band lead by a female singer that is worth listening to, is the Rogue Traders.

She's actually got some pipes. She's only about 16 here, and it's in the first couple of songs they ever did. Sounds great to me still though.

    Second comment (lol)
This song musically is very much about the juxtaposition of her sweet voice and the grunge instrumental. At the time grunge was huge in Australia.. this bordered on pop but was *grunge* .. about the same time as silverchair was popular.. but I could be wrong.. my memory is a little foggy from back then.. for reasons 😂
Adding to this.. her voice matured and became a LOT more powerful.. still, I love her voice in this.. although recordings are very ‘produced’ and played up the ‘sweetness’.. live they were brilliant! In fact I saw them live in concert last Sunday.. THEY. WERE.AWESOME! 💕🇦🇺
I noticed some of the high notes were avoided, but that could have been illness, or the dust (it was super dusty) or maybe lack of practice? Regardless very well done 💕

Ella is a good friend of my friend Ash from the band 67 Special. She sung on one of their early songs “Curious Minds “. I think you would like her voice on that track but don’t think it is on TH-cam. Ash himself has an amazing voice. You should listen to “hey there bomb” by them.

Always loved Ella Hooper, she seems like such a great person. Also love Killing Heidi, I can see why they’re not your style though. If you don’t like Weir, you’re probably not going to like their other songs. 👍👍
