This song is about Errol Flynn who was one of the if not the most famous actors from the 1930s
He was born in Hobart Tasmania
This song has a lot of parts that allude to who Errol was and what he did for example
    - “Convict state…. the Apple isle, the inbred smile” (he was from Tasmania the apple isle is what Tasmania is sometimes called and inbred is a common Australian joke that Tasmanians are inbred probably because they live on an isolated island state and the whole country was built on convicts but the worst went to Tasmania)
    - Sirocco is a wind but more importantly was the name of Errol’s yacht and was the name of the album that this song was on (the whole album is great and is worth checking out)
    - Tinsel Town is mentioned and that’s what Hollywood is referred to as
    - “To girls he just can't say no” this is in reference to the fact that Errol Flynn had a lot of women throwing themselves at him as well as the affairs he had but most importantly in reference to the relationships he had with underaged girls which led to him facing charges of statutory rape
    - the song mentions New Guinea and that’s because Flynn went to Papa New Guinea for a period and was there with an Austrian Doctor the two became friends so when it was discovered that the doctor was a Nazi sympathiser Errol was believed to be a German Spy
    - the song mentions swashbuckling which are the roles he’s most well know for with his most iconic and well remembered role being Robin Hood
There’s probably more references but these are the ones that stand out and I may be a bit off with some facts so sorry but you can always read up on the life of Errol Flynn or watch the documentary narrated by Christopher Lee

@@scanspeak00 yes whoops of course that’s also mentioned in the song my bad but I like others have said he was an actor so if this guy and others discovering this song want to see his roles they can just search them up
I did make an effort (as others did) to state that Robin Hood was his most famous role
Unfortunately this dude does not check his comments which is why he for some songs listens to covers, duets, or lame live versions of the songs people tell him to check out and he has been obsessed with Jimmy Barnes but I don’t think he’s even checked out Cold Chisel song yet

This is another great example of Aussie Crawl's knack for creating a poppy rock song which can be thoroughly enjoyed whilst ignoring the lyrics almost entirely, but then when you do bother to look into what it's about it becomes so much more captivating. They were absolutely singular.

They did not get international recognition like other bands did and I'll never fully understand why as many of those situations are right place, right time, but they just didn't get what the likes of many other aussie bands did.

For a short histroy lesson from a proud Aussie. The Errol referred to in this song is actually Errol Flynn. He was born in Hobart, Tasmania and moved to Sydney - he was expelled from 2 schools there and so went and bought a tobacco plantation in New Guinea. One ining led to another (somehow) and he began working in movies, his first movie being "Captain Blood" in 1933, and from there-on he was typecast as the swashbuckling romantic hero. He was well known for his womanizing, drinking and brawling. He died of a heart attack in 1959.

Yes, it's about Errol Flynn, a legendary actor from Tasmania, Australia who went to Hollywood and was in a lot of 'swashbuckling movies,' playing Robin Hood/pirate characters. Had a reputation for getting all the women, including a lot of Hollywood actresses. There is even a saying called 'In Like Flynn...' about getting women...He was in a scandal with underaged girls and got in trouble with the law. And his career went down after that... Australian Crawl wrote this song as a tribute to him.

There is a phrase "In like Flynn" that is used to describe easy success. In Flynn's case it was into the beds, underwear and wherever else of the ladies, but now it can be used for other things, like when your parents can gain you access to tertiary studies.
To give you an idea of what he was like, think of Carey Elwes in The Princess Bride or Robin Hood, Men in Tights except played straight. That's because Errol made many of the most iconic adventure movies of the 1930's most importantly The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). He was the swashest swashbuckler to ever swash his buckler.

Flynn and David Niven were very close in the 1930s. He was a larrikin and Niven being a Scottish man was au fait with the Aussie. They co-starred in Michael Curtiz's Charge of the Light Brigade. Detailed in Niven's book Bring on the Empty Horses. I'm not sure if it's still in print. Both long dead.

4:47 bang on. They hope to live with less compromise and less fear of failure. Errol Flynn lived boldly and without compromise (for better or worse) coming from very isolated, cold backwaters (sorry Tasmania, beautiful but some social issues back then) to swashbuckling Hollywood star

The thing that amazes me is that appears to Surfers Paradise in Queensland in the background. It doesn't look like that now. Also. this song is over 40 years old & is about a film star 40 years in their past. This is the first time I've seen this video. too (have heard the song often, I think I even have the record somewhere) so I never realised the song wasn't sung by James Reyne (pronounced rain), it explains why you can understand the words ( Australian In Joke). James was famous for his vocal stylings (manglings).

When I was in school, being called an Errol meant you weren't very good at anything IE he'd screw anything, an allusion to Flynn's proclivities.

The song was about the Australian actor, Errol Flynn, who during the 1940's and 1950's was a huge Hollywood star.

Errol Flynn was a handsome Hollywood actor from Tasmania Australia. He had reputation with the ladies & enjoyed lots of alcohol. He injected oranges with Vodka coz the Studio banned him drinking on set.
His yacht was named the Sirocco. The great David Niven was on board the Sirocco when told We WW 2 had been declared.

I'd like to tell you that in the 60s 70s 80s and part of the early 90s, very few venues had a PA system for the band. Just a disco PA Bands would hire a crew, anywhere from 2 to 8 people, they'd hire a truck, PA system and lightshow. The crew would load it in, set up, EQ the system, focus the lights, stage guy would set up the stage gear, then tune the guitars and restring them if it was time for new strings, every third gig with some players. Do the gig, pack up, load it into the truck, then drop off the crew, and home, if you were the truck driver, or one of the car drivers on larger crews. Load in at 2pm, sound check at 5. Man, you do six gigs a week in different east coast states and south Australia, drive 600 miles after a gig, straight to the next gig sometimes, well, quite often really. Overnighter we called them, in Melbourne for a time, we had triple banger Saturday's, three gigs in the one day. We were paid by the gig, so it was a Bonus, hard earned one. I absolutely loved working with a good crew, everything was like clockwork. Bands and crews had to work damn hard, but we loved our work. Most dedicated roadies in the world according to the guy who runs LaLaPalooza I think that is the name of the festival. As the years moved forward, so did the technology.

The song is from the viewpoint of the singer who wants to live the same life that Australian Errol Flynn lived, which was basically a life of adventure and debauchery. 😁😁
If you get a chance have a look at Reckless, you can actually understand the words in that one.
