Is the US in trouble in the Middle East? | The Bottom Line

  • While the United States government fully backs Israeli actions in its war on Gaza, other countries have taken a different approach.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Israel’s actions have “gone beyond the scope of self-defence”. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pushed back against the Israeli and US classification of Hamas as a terrorist group, saying, “Hamas is not a terrorist group, it is a group of liberators who protect their land.”
Council on Foreign Relations Senior Fellow Charles Kupchan tells host Steve Clemons that the US will have to get used to a world where Washington can’t always call the shots.

Let us not forget that it was Israel, which in fact created Hamas. If the USA is the biggest supporter of Israel, is it not only in terms of military interests but also because the USA needs Israel as a home base for its military operations? So, is the USA allowing Israel to do whatever it wants, including genocide, because the USA needs Israel as a strategic military ally in the Middle East?
I understand that the US wants to protect its citizens. However, it’s challenging to ascertain whether these actions are truly in the best interest of the American people. Many Americans may not support the idea of war crimes or genocide happening, especially when it’s visible in the news, and they might feel hopeless or helpless to stop this conflict.
The situation raises questions about the nature of democracy and whether the choices being made align with democratic values. Despite these challenges, there might still be a path forward that ensures military dominance while upholding humanitarian values.

@@MrLostform There isn’t a formal U.S. military base in Israel. However, the United States does provide substantial military aid and support to Israel, making it a key ally in the region. The concerns about the ethical implications of this alliance, especially in the context of conflict, are still relevant topics of discussion. The complexities of international relations and democratic values often lead to complex debates. Your insights are appreciated, and these discussions contribute to a better understanding of these intricate issues. the United States has provided significant military aid and economic assistance to Israel over the years. Since the signing of the U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 1987, Israel has been the largest recipient of U.S. foreign assistance in the form of military aid.
Under the latest MOU, which covers the years 2019 to 2028, the U.S. pledged to provide Israel with $38 billion in military aid over the ten-year period. This agreement replaced the previous MOU, which covered the years 2009 to 2018 and provided approximately $30 billion in military aid to Israel.

Israels initial descriptions of Human animals and necessary collateral damage is a much more accurate description of how Israel regards people in the region, given the current long range bombardment, justifications for atracking schools and hospitals where tens of thousands are sheltering from the widespread bombardment and the past sniping of protesters, journalists and medics.

He’s wrong. Exact opposite. The fact that Israel can bomb at will, proves how strong and powerful USA is. That might change in 50 years, but America dominates because it has SWIFT, and financial infrastructure that gives US dollar unlimited dominance.
    But very few understand this.
It’s obvious the Israel plan is long term and is to grab as much land as possible. The American and Jewish people are not to blame, they are honest hard working law abiding loving people. It is the leadership that is to blame. The negative consequence is that in the future no will abide by previous rules of war. Civilians now be fair game in all future wars. This will haunt the USA fifty years from now, which is when these other countries will rise to power - unless the USA can establish dominance in AI, but that looks unlikely, with advances China is making.

Yeah, but 7000 is stronger a news line than 2000. Interesting how Aljazira never corrected or retracted the lies they said about the hospital explosion and the 500 deaths. They had journalists in Gaza and they didn't show one picture of the massive casualties they advertised, while Israel showed aerial photos of the impact.

Whereas the US did not want to keep Iraq after the invasion , Israel is going to keep Gaza for its own security concerns after Hamas is destroyed.
So Israel is more determined to be successful in the invasion of Gaza than the US was determined in its invasion of Iraq and Afganistan.

If the US did not want to keep the countries it invaded: Iraq, Afghanistan, Panama -- it wouldn't have overthrown those governments, even killing or imprisoning their leaders, then occupying and continuing to wage war on the people there, torturing and imprisoning them. The US watched the mujahedeen defeat the Soviet military in Afghanistan after 10 long years of war. Then, it said, "let us try!" It managed to hang on twice as long but suffered the same fate.
Israel is arguably as murderous as the Nazis, though. They're running the occupied territories like concentration camps.

How can you say that what Russia is doing in Ukraine ''aggression'' if you are not also going to call what Ukraine was doing against eastern ethnic Russian Ukrainians ''aggression'' simply because they wanted to go their own way and become their own country/become part of Russia ? Russia is helping ethnic Russians who want to become part of Russia. These aren't just a small group of a few hundreds of separatists but millions of them. It is not deniable that millions of eastern Ukrainian became disenfranchised . Do they not have the right of self determination ? Like Kosovo did ? Or is the right of self determination only for a select few on this earth ? For Christ sake, the Ukrainian government is calling millions of separatists as ''terrorists'' simply for wanting to go their own way !
