A very good friend died a few months ago. We worshipped the Byrds and Gene Clark,. And, of course, we loved the VU and Nico. I'm so sorry that he never got to see this, as far as I know. He would have watched it a million times.

One of the very best rock ballads of all time. It's right up there with 'Waterloo Sunset'.

Came for the song, but loved the clip, and did a little further digging. On imdb, the title is "Sweet Skin" (orig. title "Strip-Tease" ) and Nico is not the only interesting person to appear in it. The man in the audience is Jean Sobieski, whose daughter found more fame here in the US--Leelee Sobieski. Also, not shown is Juliette Gréco, who is well-known in France as a singer of moody love songs.

Just listened for the first time...this song/melody could have been a hit. Wonder what was missing that kept it from breaking.

Great song, yes. Not a mystery why not a hit. The production is terrible. The song was not on the album, but the b-side was. The vocal and guitar sound like a demo done just out of bed. Seems like someone heard demo after album was complete and knew it was great but did nothing more than add Dillard's banjo at wrong tempo, some backing vocals, and a string arrangement at odds with the banjo. Really too bad because Gene's voice can be fantastic and the song is as well. It really seems like it could be contemporary hit today in the hands of the right producer and a country or pop vocalist. Just listen to some of the recent covers of the song to hear how shoddy the original production was. Really sad.

One of the best TH-cam-clips I have ever seen. I love Gene Clark, and the images just work perfectly with this song. MTV has got nothing on you, whoever produced this clip!

why wasn't this a huge hit. Such an incredible song. My copy is a UK demo, set me back £15 back in the day, which I was happy to pay, but in a sane world this would be a common, 50p record cos it sold 20million copies!

It's Jacques Poitrenaud's Strip-Tease (1963) with a young Nico, a french movie, very far from the perfection (but Serge Gainsbourg is in the sountrack). Thanks for your commentaries.

Gene Clark and Doug Dillard - Why Not Your Baby
She wore a blue dress when she walked in the room
And in her eyes the look I saw was filled with gloom
Is this the question I would answer all too soon?
Come tell your friend what's wrong with you
Why don't you call me your baby anymore?
Am I so changed from some strange love that went before?
Is this the change of mind that I've been designed for?
    Why not your baby anymore?
Those words we spoke they only seemed to block our way
The truth rang out when you called me and called my name
I don't know what I can do or I can say
Your good friends also find a way
Why don't you call me your baby anymore?
Am I so changed from some strange love that went before?
Is this the change of mind that I've been designed for?
    Why not your baby anymore?

Fantastic song. Too bad the production was so lame. It's no wonder it wasn't a hit. Sounds like a demo of gene and his guitar that was neglected for the album (which it is not on). Then someone finally figured out it was great and made it a a-side single, added Dillard's up tempo banjo to a down tempo song, drums, backing vocals and a string arrangement at odds with the banjo. Terrible. So sad. The song is great and gene had such a wonderful voice. It really seems this could be a contemporary hit with the right producer and pop or country vocalist. Just listen to some of the recent covers to know just how badly the original release was blown.
