I came here because I am looking for more affordable audio set-ups and aside from the advice you're about to give I am absolutely in stitches laughing at the film premier 'time stamps' and the Scottish 'lets take a bloody look at it'. Even if I don't get this recorder I'm so glad to have found your channel!
You blew me away with this presentation. I stumbled over this and you are just super. Now I follow you. I need something to hum into maybe even sing a little bit. I will buy this thingy tomorrow...
Here is a wonderful guy, knowledgeable, reasonable and professional, what a great review! "Was the dreams to thousands of audio people just 20 years ago" A lot of people fail to realise that.

I have ordered a Zoom H1n that is arriving tomorrow and can't wait to get my hands on to it. Perhaps, I too have GAS like someone mentioned in these comments somewhere, but I didn't know I wanted this little beast until I realized the phone recorder can only do so much. Thanks for this authentic and humorous review @TheRecordist! :) - Arun
❤ I muchly appreciated the humour(yes, spelt with a 'u")and even more the fact that you used the words wind and gas in a technical video. I too love the Zoom H1(I have 3)I have no idea why other than they make me happy( I am a lighting/grip guy). Too infinity and beyond. May the good guys always win. Bless your cotton socks.
Hahah. Well thank you so much! I’ve got two Zoom H1’s myself! Well-one is the H1 and the other is the H1n. Haha. Pocket stereo recorders should make everyone happy! That’s what I say. Haha. Thanks for stopping by and watching my humble video!
My H1n turned up this morning. I’ve rewatched the tutorial as it’s the best one that I’ve found. This recorder will be with me at all times, and I will have things covered while I build up my H5 system. I’ve always suffered with GAS, the last thing that I got into was a Sony portable DAT recorder that I finally got round to buying. I also suffer from UAS (Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome) but that’s another story. Love the videos, cheers from a slightly damp U.K. 👍
Haha. Woo hoo GAS and UAS unite! I play a little uke as well. I have a cheap one but I’d like to start collecting others. That’s fantastic! Thanks for watching!
I have used the Zoom H1n for many years to record lectures and found it invaluable. The only problem with the old one I found was that if I left a battery in it the battery would go flat.
Great video. I'm just starting out on the TH-cam journey and bought this to help with the audio quality of my motoring video's, travelling around Europe in our open top car... Your review has really helped and I'm now looking forward to watching more from you. Thanks
Clicked on yet another review of my prospective purchase but didn't anticipate I'd be laughing all the way through, so I subscribed. A good review and entertaining. Just what you need.
Oh. Thanks so much, man! It’s a work in progress. I think I filmed this at the end of 2022. My lighting and camera gear has been upgraded since. But I generally keep it all the same way. One key light, a backlight, a bounce board, and some cool practicals in the back there. Thanks for the compliment! Cheers!
@@TheRecordist I really dig the flared lighting in the upper corner of this video in particular. For whatever reason, the whole ensemble looked extra theatrical.
Incredible video. First video I've seen of yours. Very crisp video quality and audio and the set behind you is pleasant to they eye. I am convinced on purchasing the H1n now
Have the same Recorder. I wanted to check for other opinions about it. Thanx for the review - totally agree with you. And I learn new things about the device :)
Best review ever :) Thank you for this video it was educational and interesting. I had a Zoom H1n and traded it for the H4n Pro but I soon went back to using the H1n just because of the size, it's always with me!
I love your humorous, down to earth presentation. I was looking for a stereo mic for my Fuji S20 (I have the Rode Micro mono mic). I was going to get the Sennheiser, but it is pricey. I'm looking for ambient sound with travel videos. I'm now thinking about starting with the Zoom H1. I can mount it on my camera cage and plug it into the camera and either use that audio or synch the H1 audio in post. The added benefit is I could use the H1 to capture wild ambient audio to add to other videos. Thanks again!
We share a severe illness called "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" I am looking for a herbal cure in a corner of Nakuru County in Kenya. But, seriously, this is the best TH-cam video I have seen on the subject of audio recording. I am now confident I can capture audio. I have a lot of birds that sing around my house. I need that audio. I live a mile from the Nakuru National Park where there are all kinds of noisy creatures I need to record especially the alien one that cries at 2:00am. Thanks and say hello to your folks . Greetings from the bottom of the Great Rift Valley and the slopes of the (great?) Menengai crater/caldera.
Hey! Nice to meet you! Thanks for watching my video! I MUST know more about this alien creature that cries at 2am! And GAS is real and it’s terrible. Even when you get the thing you’re after it all starts again with a new thing. And you think that as soon as you get that last thing, you’ll be set. Except, it doesn’t ever go that way. Haha. It’s something new always! You’re in a very interesting part of the world! I’d love to hear your recordings! Thanks again! Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦
You deserve far more than 12k subs. This is a very high quality and just great video. I think the only thing missing might just be your thumbnails. I think once someone clicks they’ll have a hard time not sticking around. Keep up the good work and work on your thumbnails, maybe even hire a professional to help if you can afford it. My gut instinct tells me putting your face in the thumbnail would help. To me your thumbnails make me feel like I’m about to watch an amateur TH-camr, not a professional like you are. Sorry for being so harsh on your thumbnails but in my time watching TH-cam it feels like that’s the only thing keeping you from being a top tier product reviewer. 👍👍
No no. That’s great advice. I hate doing thumbnails. I’m no good at it. No matter what I do. Perhaps I need to consult a pro. Thanks very much for your kind words!
Thanks! I really enjoyed your review! Informative and entertaining… a perfect combination… I’ve subscribed and set up notifications… looking forward to your next review! Cheers!😊
First-time viewer, I think the Red version with the Red port is kind of an oversight. I appreciate this video, I forgot I had this recorder and need to capture audio from weddings this season. We dj a lot, and apparently, people want proof. Personally, I like the mystery when I pay someone a bunch of money for something I only plan to do once.
Wow I totally 💯 agree with you on “GAS “….. but mine happens to be Drums! I have this particular product for the same reason you said… “ just to have it “! I enjoyed this video and your presentation , thanks 🙏!
lol what a quirky presentation. I've had the H1 for 13 years and looking to upgrade, so this is helpful, thanks. Given the quality of your production I'm surprised you don't have more subs.
Great review.. I was thinking of upgrading if for no other reason than GAS. Will be keeping now.. Hey - can you give me a link to the better quieter mic that you mentioned?
Hey thanks! I think you’re talking about these guys: micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/98-294-clippy-stereo-em272-microphone.html#/83-plug_type-straight/203-microphone-em272z1 Cheers!
Nice review! Got this little fella last week, equipped it with 5k milliamp battery and went to record all kinds of stuff in my house :D Those electrets are pretty good for the price of the recorder!
Thanks very much! Yes it’s a good little recorder. So cheap for what it can do. I have both the original H1 and the H1n. I love them both. Thanks for watching!
Loved the video! Thank you so much! I just wanted to buy the h1n but now i stumbled across the h2n... do you think its worth it to invest or is the difference insignificant?
Hello, Mr. Recordist! I'm 3:37 minutes into the video and I had to pause to tell you that you are a very charismatic fellow, and I wish all reviews were done as you do them. I will continue to watch the video now and finish this comment when I'm through. Ok, so I finished this review.. This is my first time seeing one of your videos. I've done some superficial digging and have seen that you only review audio things. WHY?!!? If I may give you my humble opinion in the form of a request (with no intention of telling you what you should do)... Please review other things too. Many things. Whatever you get your hands on. You've got a gift.
Hahaha. Well thank you very much! I really appreciate those kind words! My intention is to eventually make a living off of TH-cam. One of the common bits of advice is to niche down. Which is what I’ve been doing. However, I am branching out into a few video related products. So who knows what the future might bring? Hopefully not a dead mouse left at my back porch. Cheers, man!
Wow, your style is great. Even though I have had the H1N forever and it was kind of a starting point for me, I watched your whole review because you are entertaining. I look forward to more.
Very useful stuff indeed! Thanks man you rock By the way I'm still on the fence wether I should get a second hand Zoom h1n or the brand new H1e,,, which do you suggest? Is the H1e really more noisy?
Great! The H1e sounds the same as the H1n. If you have no use for the 32 bit recording, it’s not a necessary upgrade. Also, the H1e doesn’t record in MP3, in case that was something you cared about.
I own a Zoom H1 that I bought used in 2016 (Arrival and Eye In The Sky ago) and still use it albeit lately the body of the recorder has become quite sticky. So I am considering the H1n. Great review man! Thanks.
Haha. Awesome! It’s a great little recorder to have with you! The H1n is a bit fancier than the H1. Also the price is rather acceptable! Thanks for watching!
Not all H1s have the rubber coating that goes sticky.. my original one had the same problem.. but I bought a used H1 without it, just a normal plastic finish
Just got two of these, to accompany my old but trusty DR-40. I'm recording various vehicles from the cockpit with DR-40, and two H1n will record exterior sounds from the front, and rear of the vehicle. First house tests told me quite fast that H1n is simply not for recording quiet environments, preamps (or mics) are quite noisy even comparing to old DR-40, which is practically at the bottom of the field recorders noise test table. But hey, I will use them in loud environment, so I guess I made a right decision for low price, to cover multiple angles.
@@Pe11ePD hey. Yes indeed. Any Zoom H series is going to have noisy preamps. To get quiet preamps you’d have to venture into the F series. For me, I went with Sound Devices MixPre for crazy quiet preamps. But I still use the H1n for all kinds of louder recordings.
@@TheRecordist I already got my pick at Tascam Portacapture X6. Adjustable stereo field like on my DR-40, but 32bit float up to 140db, very quiet preamps, great display. All that I wanted in a handheld recorder. I don't like chasing mics for F series etc, I'm a sucker for handheld recorders with internal mics, as they are practical for my needs, and deliver GREAT sound for the type of recordings I do. When I get my hands on X6, I can finally do really quiet ambiances.
I do professional Opera recordings using condenser microphones, and you know what? Sometimes I just stick with my h1n for how easy, versatile and easy to go it is. I have to do post production anyway, and this device does the job pretty well.
Amazing video, this is one of the videos where you don't even need to ask for likes or subscribers, because the content is so good you wanna like it. Btw, what is the omni clip mic set you were talking about? Can't seem to find it.
Hey thanks very much! Those are the Clippy mics. You can get them in stereo pairs that terminate in a single 3.5mm connector. Or singles. Or XLR. Here they are: micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/98-clippy-stereo-em272-microphone.html
Hey, hey, - here I am, expecting a nerd, making a nerdy review. And what do I get - a guy with practical experience, with a blessed and sofisticated sense of humor, and a guy who sings a mean overdub harmony! - thanks for 21 minutes of enjoyment ( and yes, I also learned a lot of relevant stuff)
Great stuff as always, thanks. Quick question. I have one of these for recording the sounds of automobile engine noises. I am looking for an affordable lav mic that I can tape to the rear bumper and connect to the H1n sitting in the trunk. Any recommendations on a good, affordable lav mic for the purpose?
@paulmisencik also, you should follow Watson Wu. He’s the foremost authority on recording automobiles (he’s done many for movies). twitter.com/watsonwu?s=21&t=8Om8eCBGTg8b41GyCxJ5YQ
Hi Thanks for the video! I want a mic for recording my acoustic guitar along with singing. I am confused with Rode NT1 and Zoom H2N. What will be value for money? Kindly guide 😌
Hey there! Well, the Røde NT1 has an XLR connection and requires 48v phantom power to operate - none of which is available on the H2n. The H2n can record with the built in mics or with an external lav mic or the like. To use the NT1 (I recommend that mic, but not the NT1a), you’ll need something that can power it properly. The Zoom H5 is a good choice, or the Zoom F3. Both offer phantom power and can accept an XLR input. Hope this helps!
@@sanjaypaul5898 you would need both for it to work. But you can still record your guitar and singing with the H2n. Just use the built in mics. It’s not the best quality though. I thought you already had the NT1. If you do already have that mic, then a zoom H5 is all you’d need (and an XLR cable) to start recording. Even in separate tracks.
@@sanjaypaul5898 oh yes. Of course. Any interface will do just fine. Lower cost good ones can be found anywhere. Audient makes great ones. The SSL ones are also very good. Focusrite will also work. You just need to connect it to a computer. That’s all. I thought by mentioning the H2n on my H1n video, you were looking for portability. But if not, an interface is the way to go!
Hi, I have a problem with my H1N. As soon as I turn up the gain wheel over level 6, the background noise starts to be too much. From level 7 is unacceptable! I don't understand why my H1N is so noisy compared to many other which were tested by TH-camrs in many videos.. Could It be possible that my H1N is broken? (I bought it 3 days ago). Thanks.
Hi there. Generally the H1n has noisy preamps above 5.5. I always try to keep my recordings under 5.5 on the gain wheel and then increase the gain in post. That said, I can’t hear the noise to be able to tell you. Please email me 10 seconds of your gain at 5 and 10 seconds with your gain at 6. Just silence. I’ll let you know what I think. Recordist@thetps.ca
@@TheRecordist thx a lot for replying. Ok, you confirm the noisy mic/preamp. So should I stay relaxed? No worries about possible malfunctioning?!? ... really? Can I stay in 5.5 and turn up the volume in post production? Do you get an acceptable result? Thanks!
@@_stellasolitaria_ hi there. Yes. It helps to keep it under 5.5 on the gain dial. But the H1n is a noisy recorder anyway. Not as noisy as many other products but noisy by pro standards. Generally, getting closer to a source reduces noise. But to get very low noise, you’d have to get into the Zoom F-series or Sound Devices MixPre series or the like.
More renditions of Drunken Sailor please! 🏴☠ I am a proud owner of a zoom H1n since ~2020ish and had no idea it could do that. Thanks for the great video!
Hi there. Thanks! Yes, the H1n would work well for a choir. I’d set it to 24 bit, 48kHz, and then have the peaks hitting at -12 to -6dB. Be sure to mount the device center and on a stand. Do not touch the unit during recording since it’s sensitive. Should work pretty good!
Hey. Thank! Yes. I always recommend Clippy EM-272 omni lav mics. They’re a little larger than most but the sound is amazeballs. www.Micbooster.com Cheers!
ปีที่แล้ว +1
you are amazing! you have a new fan at first view!
Great and funny review! I consider buying a portable recorder for on-the-go recordings. Is it compatible with the Clippy EM272Z1Mics? Because they require 12-48V phantom power. Is there a comparable alternative if the H1N doesn't have phantom power?
Hey thanks! No, the H1n can’t take XLR cables. But there are versions of the Clippy EM272 mics that terminate in a stereo 3.5mm connector. As for alternatives that can take the XLR cables, I would look at the Zoom F3 for a really nice sounding recorder with nice preamps. Also, there are the Zoom H4n Pro or the Zoom H5. Both of those do not have preamps as good as the F3 but they will do the job. Hope this helps!
@@TheRecordistThank you, a lot of options! I already use the F6, that's why I was thinking of a smaller field recorder for travelling. Do you know if the Clippys that I have would work on the H1N if I would only buy an adapter XLR to 3.5mm? They require phantom power. As for the F3, does it have preamps that are similar to the F6 and does it allow you to separately switch on/off the phantom power on both XLR inputs?
@@seraphims3219 hey. The H1n doesn’t provide phantom power. You need XLR ins to power a mic that requires 48v phantom power. There is no adapter that will work, unless you used an external powered XLR mixer and piped the stereo output to the H1n.
Thank you kindly for the Review. I'm looking for a Digital Voice Recorder and still pondering the Zoom H1n in 2024 or if I can find something similar that's better for the same reasonable price.
Hey. No worries. I would say that if you can find the Zoom H1n, grab it. It’s a great little recorder. Not the best but the best for the money. That model has now been replaced with the H1essential which is 32 bits and less options.
i am thinking to buy this item but i want to be sure; can i use a mic wit this (or should i?). And if i should use a mic, what do you suggest? i am going to use it to record guitar or Baglama (a Turkish instrument with strings?
Hey there. Hmm. The H1 is more of a field recording recorder. It has no XLR input for a good quality mic. It records in stereo with built in mics. You can add small plug-in-power mics to it, but I wouldn’t recommend it for music. I’d recommend the Zoom H5 for what you’re after. It has all kinds of ways you can use it. And it has two XLR inputs and phantom power. You can use this to record with the built in mics or with additional mics. It’ll take most microphones without issue. Hope this helps!
@@TheRecordist ty for reply, i watched h5 videos, it is exactly what i want but it is too over my budget, hahah, i have to wait for a long time and keep money, anyway thank you again
Fix for rattling noise: take a foam earbud fluffy cover, cut a very thin strip and insert it along the top or bottom of the volume rocker. Poke it in with a thin sharp blade. It will stay nicely in the cavity and totally cure the rattle. You'll need to do the same with the trash/delete button. These are the only buttons that have the rattle and this solution is so good it might have been something they did in the factory. Black coloured foam will not be visible, or it will look factory made on a white edition. Very smart looking and feeling too.
Hi, I haven't been using an external audio recorder before and google leads me here. Does H1n suitable for recording ambience sounds? Like waves, crickets, etc. Secondly, from your experience how long does a Ni-MH last? And of course, most importantly, how quickly does it start? Thanks.
Hey Halim! Yes. The H1n is great for ambient sounds. But if the sounds are very quiet, you might get some noise. The preamps are a bit noisy for very quiet sources. But there are many recorders that are much noisier. As for battery life, I get about 6-8 hours at 24 bit, 48kHz. You can get up to 10 at 16 but 44.1kHz. Hope this helps!
The H1n still boils my blood somewhat, it seems like they completely missed the point of the original. Having a single AA is much easier to manage with the H1 compared to the 2xAAA on the H1n. H1n is larger for seemingly no reason.. and still has the same annoying 32GB card limit (no SDXC support in 2018?) I would have payed 3x the price of the H1 for the exact same physical format with SDXC support and the highest quality mics in the cage they could muster PS: H1n looks to have the dreadful MicroUSB, not the robust MiniUSB
I can’t argue with any of that. But it’s the cheapest most entry level recorder in their H series. I don’t expect them to change much for the better. But I do appreciate the gain dial as opposed to the buttons. I still find myself reaching for my old H1 more than I thought I would. But you’re right about just about everything you said.
Great review and awesome video thanks! I've been on the fence about this for a bit now...I'm back in a band after a long while out of the life, I been using an iPhone to record our noize making but, it cuts out and sounds are (bad)funky. In a practice space, full band with loud drums, bass and a couple guitars...would this be of any use at all? I just want something for review not tracks to edit, I just wanna see how much we suck or not. Would this work for that?
Hey! Yes. I think this will work for what you’re after. It can take some high SPL. It’ll sound like it sounds when in the room. Placement will be key for a balanced sound since there aren’t separate tracks to mic everything. I think it’ll work great. Cheers!
Hello Mr. Time Preserver, complete novice here who is interested in capturing some nature ambience. I picked up the H1n and am now GASing so I'm looking at the Clippys on Micbooster (to use with the H1n). For the Clippy EM272 Stereo Mic, they give you an option of a EM272Z1 or EM272M microphone. Which should I go with?
Hey there! Haha. I’m ALWAYS GASing. Haha. As far as the differences, you’re right. There are two. I’ve always got the EM272Z1 with the right angle connector. It seems the difference might be some type of ferrite RF protection in the cable? I don’t know exactly. This is a great question to ask Nick Roast (the owner) about. Give him an email at info@micbooster.com He’s a really nice guy and is usually pretty quick at responding. Hope that helps!
Hey thanks! The best recorder? Well that’s a tricky question, because the best would probably be a Sound Devices recorder ($1000 to $10,000). Haha. The cheapest and best for the task you’re looking at might be a Zoom H5. It has 1/4 inch/XLR ins. This way you could go stereo line out of your Street Cube and directly into the recorder. I did a review about that one: th-cam.com/video/G54JMmfHD80/w-d-xo.htmlsi=F7WJKIc13kbx0pF9 You could make it work with the Zoom H1 as well, you’d just need an adapter that converts two 1/4 inch into one 3.5mm stereo connector. Hope this helps!
I've been using it for outdoor field recordings for three of years, for me it is the best, providing you don't mind syncing the audio later. Why I use this is with dead cat, unlike most others there is still a sterile area around the X-Y mics as it's design keeps the windshield/dead cat off of them. With say the H2n if the wind hits the dead cat, it comes up against solid object or barrier. With the H1N it has no solid barrier behind the dead cat.
Question - this thing only records one track at a time? the gain dial only effects the external input? If that's the case, I'm returning this damn thing.
Hey. No. It records the XY mics built in with one dial. It’s a stereo microphone with a left and a right, but it’s meant for things like stereo ambience recording. It will also record stereo through the mic input jack as well.
@@chicojuanito395 yes. My apologies. It will only record one set of mics at one time. Not simultaneous recording. The H5 will do the 4 channels simultaneously.
In the video at 2:25, I see version: 1.21 on the screen, is there a new firmware version? My says version: 1.19, I don't a system version 1.21 on the Zoom site for this model...?
Good eye! I don’t have an answer for you. It shipped that way. I went to see if it needed an firmware update and I found that the newest firmware had a smaller number than the one it says on my recorder. It makes no sense. It’s an error. There is no newer firmware update. You’re good. Haha.
Sweet review. I was wondering if it’s possible to hook up a set like the Comica vimo and use two wireless mics while having the receiver connected onto this recorder?
@@TheRecordist so appreciate your reply, I use regular Alkaline, twice now they have run down … thanks again, you have a gift of teaching and entertaining!
@@kimpearce2482 hmm. Maybe it’s trickle draining. That’s strange. I keep my alkalines in there always and it’s ready to go each time with the same amount of charge. I don’t recall if there was a setting for that other than to be sure to tell the unit that you’re using alkaline batteries in the menu.

I am glad I found your channel. I really like your reviews. Yours is probably my favorite gear review site on the web.
Hey thanks, Ronald! That’s very kind of you to say! I really appreciate it! Cheers!
Oh dear me, I have the same sickness as you. I love gear. I have gear i haven't used yet, but i will before 2050.
Hahaha. I have some gear sitting here right now still in their unopened boxes. Haha. GAS… why?? Haha
I have used the Zoom H1n for many years to record lectures and found it invaluable. The only problem with the old one I found was that if I left a battery in it the battery would go flat.
You’re right. But what a great little unit for little cost! Thanks for watching!
Great video. I'm just starting out on the TH-cam journey and bought this to help with the audio quality of my motoring video's, travelling around Europe in our open top car... Your review has really helped and I'm now looking forward to watching more from you. Thanks
Oh that’s wonderful and so cool! I’m glad I could help! Cheers!
Hi! This is the first time I came across your channel and you had me hooked in the first 30 seconds. Amazing, not the mics, but you, Sir.
Well thank you very much! I really appreciate that! What a compliment! Cheers!
Clicked on yet another review of my prospective purchase but didn't anticipate I'd be laughing all the way through, so I subscribed. A good review and entertaining. Just what you need.
Hey thanks so much! Cheers!
Oh man, you're funny! Loved the review. Just picked up an h1n. Had an h1 years ago. These devices are great for my needs and won't break the bank.
Haha. Thanks! And you are correct!
Dude. Absolutely love your lighting setup!
I am convinced on purchasing the H1n now
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much for the kind words! And enjoy your new H1n!

Best review ever :) Thank you for this video it was educational and interesting. I had a Zoom H1n and traded it for the H4n Pro but I soon went back to using the H1n just because of the size, it's always with me!
Me too! I always have the H1n with me. You never know! Thanks for the wonderful comment!
That’ll work just fine! Just think about wind protection. Cheers!

Is it possible to record audio from the stereo mics and also a plug-in lavier mic at the same time? Thanks

Haha. Thanks so much, man! I appreciate that! Cheers!

Ok, so I finished this review..
This is my first time seeing one of your videos. I've done some superficial digging and have seen that you only review audio things. WHY?!!?

Very useful stuff indeed! Thanks man you rock
By the way I'm still on the fence wether I should get a second hand Zoom h1n or the brand new H1e,,, which do you suggest? Is the H1e really more noisy?
Great! The H1e sounds the same as the H1n. If you have no use for the 32 bit recording, it’s not a necessary upgrade.
Also, the H1e doesn’t record in MP3, in case that was something you cared about.
Wonderful video! Ready to buy the zoom h1n for making videos.

Thank you for quick response!
So you're not recommending Zoom H2N ?
And between Rode NT1 and Zoom H5 which will you suggest?
@@sanjaypaul5898 you would need both for it to work.
But you can still record your guitar and singing with the H2n. Just use the built in mics. It’s not the best quality though.
I thought you already had the NT1.
If you do already have that mic, then a zoom H5 is all you’d need (and an XLR cable) to start recording. Even in separate tracks.
Okay sir! Got it!
But sir instead of buying Zoom H5 can we not buy Interfaces (e.g. Focusrite) ?

Would it be good for recording a guitar? Also do you still need the batteries if you connect it directly to pc?
It’ll work for recording acoustic guitar. It wouldn’t be my first choice, but it’ll work.
And yes, the computer will power the recorder.
@@TheRecordist thanks for the answer! So what would be your first choice for around the same price?
Great video thanks. Would the H1n be suitable to record a choir containing about 30 voices and what settings would be best. Thanks
Hi there. Thanks! Yes, the H1n would work well for a choir. I’d set it to 24 bit, 48kHz, and then have the peaks hitting at -12 to -6dB. Be sure to mount the device center and on a stand. Do not touch the unit during recording since it’s sensitive.
Should work pretty good!
Great video ! Are there any specific clip on / lav mics that you'd reccomend for the zoom h1n ?
Hey. Thank! Yes. I always recommend Clippy EM-272 omni lav mics. They’re a little larger than most but the sound is amazeballs. www.Micbooster.com

you are amazing! you have a new fan at first view!
Haha. Thank you very much!
@@TheRecordistI see - thank you!
That’s a great solution! Thanks for sharing that! Cheers!
good video man, explained very well and with a touch of humour 😆 love it , keep it up !
Haha. Thanks so much! Cheers!
H1n is larger for seemingly no reason.. and still has the same annoying 32GB card limit (no SDXC support in 2018?)
I would have payed 3x the price of the H1 for the exact same physical format with SDXC support and the highest quality mics in the cage they could muster
PS: H1n looks to have the dreadful MicroUSB, not the robust MiniUSB
Cheers!
Brilliant video - thank you. From a fellow GAS sufferer…
Haha. Thanks so much! Cheers!
Great and thorough review. Thank you!!!
Hey thanks so much! Cheers!
Give him an email at info@micbooster.com
He’s a really nice guy and is usually pretty quick at responding.
Hope that helps!

Gret review! What is the best recorder for a line in, coming out of a Street cube amp?
I did a review about that one: th-cam.com/video/G54JMmfHD80/w-d-xo.htmlsi=F7WJKIc13kbx0pF9
You could make it work with the Zoom H1 as well, you’d just need an adapter that converts two 1/4 inch into one 3.5mm stereo connector.
Hope this helps!
@@TheRecordist Thank you! Great info!
How high should you have the volume knob when recording outdoor ambient noises?
I normally don’t raise it over 5.5 on the dial. Otherwise the preamp noise is too loud. You can always raise the gain in post.
Yep. You’re right about that. It’s a great and low-cost unit!
I had to Google dead 🐈 😂.
Thank you very much for this very informative review.
You’re very welcome! Cheers!
@@TheRecordist I meant, you can only record the xy OR the external input at one time?
Hey. Oh yes. You can totally do that. You’ll get better audio that way than into a camera!
@@TheRecordistThanks so much for replying. I’ll be ordering one! Thanks again! ❤
Great video. Thankyou. One thing- do you have to take batteries out when not using? My batteries seem to run down so quickly.
Hey thanks! I notice that happening with rechargeable batteries but not regular alkaline ones. Are you per chance using rechargeable batteries?
@@TheRecordist so appreciate your reply, I use regular Alkaline, twice now they have run down … thanks again, you have a gift of teaching and entertaining!
@@kimpearce2482 hmm. Maybe it’s trickle draining. That’s strange. I keep my alkalines in there always and it’s ready to go each time with the same amount of charge. I don’t recall if there was a setting for that other than to be sure to tell the unit that you’re using alkaline batteries in the menu.
