Great video! I have one of the original models of this thing. I used to make easy money just recording live bands back in the 2010s. My setup was putting this thing on a tri-pod up high to capture the ambient live air sounds and then run 1 "line out" from the mixing board. I'd get 2 separate audio tracks and then mix them together in Audacity after the show. Highly versatile device!
I agree there is a bit of noise to the pre amp, however it is very easy to clean up. And ideal for someone wanting to up their audio, or wanting to enter into higher quality, without spending a lot of money
@@0QualityOverQuantity a good alternative within the present offerings would be the likes of the Tascam DR-40, Or the Zoom H5 which is slightly higher price but will allow more headroom and dynamic range with quieter noise results also.
You better know it haha! I have to say it is very hard wearing it's not broken yet and it's been dropped alot... and I mean alot! Also has been in a house move with not well package boxes. Thanks for the comment :)
Aha! I missed a trick there definitely! But for your repeated viewing pleasure you can see it here in this short. th-cam.com/users/shorts9tkopQ7kQlM?feature=share
This is an amazing device. The studio quality stereo mics alone are worth the price of the whole unite. Also the Zoom H6, which is basically the same unit but with more features. Now is the best time to purchases these, because they are heavily discounted to make room for newer models.
I've used it linked to my Laptop via USB and the quality is really good! if you are looking to record clean voice overs and are on a tight budget, the old blanket over you and the laptop trick, whilst you record works like a treat! without forking out masses on a studio set up with a full audio interface.
@eletor You should be good. Be sure to set your mic levels and if using the x/y mics have a wind protector 'dead cat' on it. Is it for talking over or getting cleaner audio of the vehicles?
@@CraigSmithCinePhoto Trying to see how clean the audio is for engine and tire sounds, I will have a dead cat on it. Hoping it has a dynamic enough range to pick up ambient sound when adjusted to not peak during the loud moments.
Thanks for the video! Can you please tell me - can I use it as a microphone for recording on a PC via an external AUDIENT ID4 MKII sound card? If I connect an external condenser microphone to it, then the recording will be on both the recorder's microphone and the connected external one - right?
Hey! Thanks for watching. Yes, you should be able to use the Zoom H4n Pro with the Audient iD4 MK2 by connecting the Zoom's line-out to the iD4's input. You can also record a condenser mic (via XLR) and the built-in XY mics simultaneously on the H4n Pro, giving you up to 4 channels. For the best sound quality, consider using the Audient’s preamps if the condenser mic is your priority. Let me know if you need more details!
@@CraigSmithCinePhoto Thanks for the quick reply! Audio Technica AT2020 microphone. But in general, the task is to record what is happening in the room at a distance of about 2 meters. Will Zoom H4n Pro normally record voice and guitar for such purposes?
@ДмитрийХохлов-с8в that's not a problem! Using the onboard phantom power your mic will be great. And using a mix of the x and y mic for room ambience and the condenser mic for closer will work great as in post you'll be able to shape your soundscape the way you like. Retaining the live feel but having more polished crisp audio capture of the performance. Hope this helps :).
I’ve had this one for several years until I recently moved out of state and literally cannot find it. I just make videos at home mostly but I am working on a documentary (first time woohoo). Anyway, now I’m shopping for a new audio recorder/solution. I have a canon c300 mkii. I want to make sure the audio is as perfect as I can. Of course. I have some xlr lav mics but I want to record separate just in case. So, now I’m watching videos to see what my options are. This little project is self-funded…so would like to be smart about where I spend for this project but also get something that I can use again
It for sure is still a good option to go with your current set up. That's great to hear your doing a documentary I am currently working on one myself. What is your documentary about? Have you looked into the tascam offerings aswell?

It has noisy preamps compared to what is available today. But you can buy this now very old model for much less.

What would you recommend today that's comparable without the noise?

Have you used the USB out to send audio to a different device?
