    After trying out the obligatory cherry shrimp I got some tangerine tigers and they are by far my favorite. I keep them in tap water, neo parameters on the soft side and they have been extremely hardy and prolific. Every time I look in their tank I see at least half a dozen berried females. Mileage will of course vary, but in my experience they have been very easy to keep. I am curious about the degree to which they have been selectively bred. My understanding is that they are a natural caridina color morph from Taiwan, and photos I’ve come across of wild shrimp vs. domestic look about the same. That said, as they are more popular already as some of the new wild caridinas coming in, I’m sure there’s been some tinkering.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If they are orange they are selectively bred from tan/soft yellow clear colored milky looking wild shrimp, but they're one of the first caridina fancy lines to appear in the late 1990s

    Great to know Malawa can get a bit cold it seems like you stumbled into becoming a premier Malawa shrimp keeping expert. I got some off aquabid since they seem to be very difficult to find and have been introducing them into my tanks. Have you run into them crossing with any other shrimp?

    • @TheBSideDJ
      @TheBSideDJ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      malawa (sulawesi) is a caridina and they do not crossbreed with neocaridina. be carefull: malawa shrimp are sometimes confused with mini-japonica shrimp (and mini-japonica is also another specie then the bigger japonica)....

    Hi Alex, could you give me a bit of advice? I am getting some Malawa shrimp sent to me, they will have been in a bag- (not a breather bag) I plan to float them, should I then drip acclimate them then add- or net and dump them into the tank after temp acclimating them?
    if they were in a breather bag I would definitely drip acclimate them.
    the shrimp are coming from a tank with a ph of 6.4 my tank is 7.3.

    Great video, but I have a question.
    In my LFS, they have these large, brightly red shrimp, with white legs and antennae called Sulawesi shrimp (Caridina denerlii). Yours looks nothing like those, so I'm quite intrigued why they have the same name.

      So Malawa are from the part of the island called "Malawa" heh.... the cardinals and 63 other species live in a system of 5 lakes on the island which is roughly the size of Ireland. So it has the most shrimp diversity in the world... over 400 species in the waters near or on the island...pretty amazing place

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So i use crushed coral ..
      About a cup per 5 gallons...and that works well with my tap water. Im guessing anyone using tums may be keeping harder water shrimp like amanos, Pinocchios or Sulawesi shrimp. If you are keeping caridina shrimp, usually people use RO water and "salty shrimp" is added to get the kh to where they want it. ...that brand is basically becoming the fancy shrimp breeder standard.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Probably not in a problematic way. Maybe in 5 years or more, they can be weak or prone to illness if they're all from the first small group...but shrimp don't need to hold down jobs or go to college haha...so luckily we don't notice most of the health or development issues expressing in a harmful way...for quite a while
