When you're middle-aged, clean living will help you live longer. I'm 55, I've quit drinking, I'm eating healthy, and I exercise. I feel better than I was when I was 30 drinking and partying!

That was a great video. Honest and to the point. I think most people feel that living in Thailand must mean parties and girls all the time but as an older gentleman like yourself, I feel that cannot be the only way to live and your videos shows us what is important is finding some inner peace. I have never been a partier or big drinker, so seeing you live this way makes me feel that there are different ways to live and good on on you for showing us that, keep up the great videos, we'll keep watching.

I spent every lunch time in that park during my second week in Chiang Mai. I know what you are saying. My friends loved to go out and get smashed and they got into smoking weed, but I could never get into it. If I did go out it was to keep them happy, but I was never happy. And we too drifted apart. I got married and they would stop asking me out. I enjoyed the family life, raising my children. And now I am in Thailand, trying to enjoy my own happiness in retirement, being able to afford to do things that I could never afford back home in Australia. It's all new and exciting for me, and I hope I find peace and happiness here in Thailand.

I was just the same which is why I now choose to live in the suburbs of Chiang Mai and my extremely peaceful and zen type of existence. Partying is for the young and there comes a time when you wake up and realize that you have wasted a lot of time getting stupid.

I'm from a small town in Midwestern America & I could identify with a lot of what you said... I suspect I'm a little older than you being born in 1965 & growing up hard rock & metal in the early 80's but most of your descriptive rang true to what I experienced.
Love this video... I was pretty controlled in my younger days but still went out partying or drinking in bars with friends from time to time.
I saw many go too far down the path & never return from partying too hard etc.
Me... I had my motorcycling, martial arts & many outdoor activities that made me smile but repetitive failed relationships & unexpected injury dragged me down & I was still always searching for elusive happiness that never seemed attainable that is until I stopped thinking just about myself & started helping others in need which kind-of started to pull me out of my funk.
That's when I met my Thai wife who's from Chiang Mai & discovered her world... & a new way of thinking about where & how to live a happy life.
My 1st trip to Thailand I truly had an epiphany of sorts while riding a motorcycle through the mountain's of Mae Hong Son with my future wife on the back.
It was early morning & we pulled off on a roadside mountain overlook maybe a couple thousand feet up in elevation while she got on the phone talking to clients for her small web design company based in Chiang Mai for probably about an hour & I had time to kill.
During that brief period I just sat on the bike & really REALLY took in my surroundings & noticed that the morning mist was still kinda touching my face with the sun just starting to burn it off... the valley below had people working hard in the fields... everywhere laying around me on the ground were contented Thai dogs sleeping without a care in the world... behind me the mountain roadway was humming along with trucks loaded with fresh produce going to markets & a constant flow of flip-flop wearing motorcycle riders going about their daily commute... the sounds of a Buddhist temple resonated from nearby... all of these simple daily life things & I realized that happiness can be found anywhere but MINE was found then & there sitting on a trusty little rental Yamaha XT225 looking at some of the most beautiful scenery & nicest people I've seen in my life.
The future wife got off her business calls & asked me what I'd been doing while she was preoccupied... I shared my observations & asked her "do you realize that you live in a place some might consider paradise"?
She answered in a questioning tone "really do you think so" ?
I told her no place is perfect... all have their problems & faults... but this place is MY perfect.
February 7th will be our 18th anniversary & we'll be moving full time to somewhere in the Northern part of the country when I'm 62... I can't wait !
A big garden, small motorcycle, family/friends, a BBQ grill & our health... everything we need ❤
Keep doing what you do & taking us along for the ride... wishing you healthy happy days. 🙂

I hear you man, and I appreciate your honesty. I am 3 days dry now from Cannabis. I was getting cocky with it, but just fell into the addiction trap again as always, hammer heading it till my brain became literally numbed from it, and I finally had to admit that that held no value whatsoever for me, in fact, it had become merely a detriment, and nothing more. I am a marijuanac, meaning, I can not have just a taste, and be good. If I could take it or leave it, it would be OK, but I can't, so I have to be honest with myself, and come clean of it. I heard, never think about you're giving up, but think about what you will be gaining by giving it up, because one will go quite forward comparatively without it.

It helps to hear rational people speak on it, and not to listen to the more cult like verbiage coming from "the crowd". Never follow the "the crowd"; just be your own man. I heard that cannabis actually inhibits rapid eye movement. REM gives our sleep the highest value. Researchers learned that Magnesium L Threonate (Magtein) enhances REM, because it can penetrate the blood, brain barrier. @@WalkAboutWayne

Interesting video and I guess challenging in a place that has entertainment on tap. Although ChaingMai district seems less touristy and more laid back . The older you get the less appealing the tourist traps become . So I guess the question is how can you spend your time in Thailand as an older person . I saw plenty of old men in Pattaya that didn’t look so happy but they go about a daily routine to kill time . Perhaps a nomadic life style in Thailand is desirable where your constantly visiting new places . Certainly the loops you travelled recently have proven to be interesting trips . Or perhaps find something to do there that has a social benefit. I agree the clubs are are overrated.

Alot of my mates couldn’t believe it when I quit the scene since I was considered the "wildest" one in the extended group. I always say when I'm asked "On my death bed I'm not going to ever say I wish I partied and did more persian rugs". I lived that part of my life with zero regrets.

When I was in my early 20's my friends and I would always laugh at the old guys in the club. Then one day, I realized I had become the old guy in the club. Like you, I took a look around and realized I no longer belonged there. That was the last time I've ever set foot in one. I think I was around 34 at the time. I wasn't much into smoking but I've had more nights where I don't remember what happened due to alcohol than I care to admit. Glad you came out of it all and cleaned your life up as have I. Nothing wrong with a couple of beers or a joint.
I don’t like being drunk though.
I feel very much the same as you though, when I came to Chiang Mai earlier this year for a couple of months I drank bugger all and was happiest being sober and having the Occasional joint at night. Getting shitfaced is a young man’s game and is quite often just a symptom of an unfulfilled path.
Usually in Australia I smoke a lot more weed and drink more to ease the pain of working and the general feeling of emptiness that being here brings.
Can’t wait to move their full time next year , take care man, I hope we can meet and have a chat one day.

Funny thing is that I came to Thailand (Chiang Mai about 10 years ago and have been back a few times since and it was the chill and cheap lifestyle in which I did not have to sacrifice anything for that was important to me. So I vowed to retire there. I doubt I will ever be a clever digital nomad or such, so it is 7 years to retire.
I tell people about this and people presume I want to party and or get into the bargirl scene. I am not about that at all.
I want to chill, go to the gym and maybe get a couple of interests/hobbies. Relax, get fit and have a very quiet time of things

@@WalkAboutWayne Yes, the other thing they presume is I will try to find a wife. I really do not understand this either. I have been divorced 20 years and not bothered finding another wife here, why would I seek out a wife in a foreign country I have less in common with?
20 years alone has me very used to my own company.
      People have strange ideas.
I really look forward to making my way there. Who knows, if you are still there I may see you around?

I like 2 beers and then that's it. It is tricky going to Thailand and not getting caught up in the drinking to excess thing, then wake up feeling like crap and doing that most every night for a month. Good for you Wayne to do it how you feel! I also saw Steady Eddy video on how he stopped drinking and felt a lot better. He's back in Thailand now I think and hope he's doing good.

I was the same on my last trip minimal bars, and when I went, I was completely bored there even with chatting to another farang there and the ladies, it was all just emptyness, in my 30's however I loved it, getting smashed and taking a puss home, but now, in my 50's I just can't be assed sinking all those beers and wasting time in bars with those pointless conversations, ok had a few massages here and there but that was it, spent most of my time travelling, food, and sightseeing and minimal booze and that is they key if I went over there coz that demon alcohol will kill you quick especially those disgusting Thai lagers so prevalent, I would hate to think how many chemicals they put in that trash, I love craft but its just too bloody expensive even here at home $13 for a 500m can, prefer a cup of tea mate. Stay sober, healthy and the buzz of life as you mentioned is far better.
