The whole "read what you like" thing is spot-on advice. I personally think the story of the Iron Warriors through the great crusade and Horus Heresy is a quintessential example of how good attributes and intentions get twisted in the grimdark, so first my first "read" (audiobook, I too suffer from gen z brain) was The Hammer of Olympia. I'm definitely going to check out the omnibus though, I really like the Horus Heresy and having a guide through the reading is gonna be a huge help. Another absolute banger of a video, keep em coming!

@@dorian447 The neat thing is they you're actually right on both counts. There are several stories that all interweave into the overarching narrative that is the Horus Heresy, assuming that the HH is what you're talking about that is. Otherwise, there are a TON of stories written in the 40k universe that have very little to do with one another.
Ultimately, it is very complicated but a worthwhile endeavor. Just keep reading and it'll make sense down the line

@@cvampaul I mean there's the omnibus that Glueboy talks about, but besides that I'm not too sure. If you'd like to find a book about something specifically but don't know where to start I think the best way to find it is the bottom of the wiki page where they mention all their sources

One of my favorite 40k books is Execution Hour. It takes place during the 12th black crusade and the main character is a captain of a ship in battlefleet gothic, but it has an absolute pile of viewpoint characters that dont get enough love like arbites and bomber pilots. Its so simply 40k that I reccommend it to everyone that hasn't read it. The author really understands how to write grimdark.

I ended up with a huge backlog thanks to a Humble Bundle package of like 20 audiobooks. I definitely recommend Eisenhorn book 1 to get a good narrative foothold on the universe then picking up a short story anthology to sample which group interests you, and pick a novel or 2 based off that. That was how I found the Fabius Bile trilogy. From there once you've gotten a handle on the basics of the lore and universe it is absolutely worth reading the first 4 or 5 Horus Heresy books.

    Great video!
I've just started with my first book, Brothers of the Snake (not in the list) and it's awesome. After watching this, my Warhammer backlog just got a little bigger.
Although I'm not a Warhammer player, the universe is so cool and deep that it's an awesome thing to have all these great books to read. It makes me think the 40k universe as a collective fantasy, with many writers giving their contribution to it. Sad we don't have 5-10 lives to read and know all the fantasy that has been written in the world, with Warhammer alone going for 300+ books.

Mechanicum and Titanicus. Best 40k books I've read. But I've only read 4, those and Horus Rising and Master of Mankind. TBH, I love all of them, but I love the Ad Mech most.

I won't spoil anything for you, but here's my quick, broad review of the Gotrek and Felix series. The William King era: Top-notch, practically perfect. Fantastic storytelling, great blend of action and comedy, a strong 'travelog' feeling, plus Giantslayer features my favorite Warhammer Fantasy character. The Nathan Long era: my second least favorite era. The stories and writing are decent, but the books suffer from a significant tonal shift which makes them a very different read from the previous books. Also, 'Orcslayer' is really not an appropriate title IMHO, for reasons you'll understand once you get to it. The Josh Reynolds books: a return to form. Still more action-heavy than the King novels, but a return of the lighter elements and the 'exploration' aspect. It should be noted that these books take place outside of the serialized stories of the earlier novels. The David Guymer novels: more serious again, but not as oppressively as the Long novels. This is understandable, given that one of them is set in Mordheim and the others during the End Times. Guymer is probably the best writer of Gotrek after King. Finally, there's the Darius Hinks era: my LEAST favorite Gotrek novels. I won't give specifics because of spoilers, but Hinks has a horrible habit of making the characters serve his story rather than the other way around, which is an absolute sin for a legacy character like Gotrek. There's another character which was already established by previous authors that Hinks can't seem to decide is a ruthless killer or a moody teen run from home. About the only redeeming thing about these books is that they tend to be good snapshots of the factions Gotrek is aligned against. Now the series has moved on to a new author, Richard Strachan, but I haven't read that book yet, so I can't comment on it yet. Let's hope that he follows King and Guymer's example and not Hinks'.

Only issue is that it gives off some wrong impressions of characters for newcomers and some of its lore is outdated but thats just cause it started a good while ago. And those are issues every abridged parody series has. It is the best fan series for 40k on YT though. It was one of the things that fully pulled me into this hobby.
