Happy Birthday, Brian. Your story about Defending Your Life is absolutely amazing. I was that closeted gay kid of 17 when this movie released in theaters, and I saw it because I worshipped at the altar of Broadcast News. It has stayed with me the past 33 years, and like with all great art, each year I feel something different with the film.
What do you like about it? I saw it the first week it came out and absolutely hated it. One of the most over-hyped movies ever IMO, but I'm keen to hear what's good about it.
@@kathduncan9618it’s a surreal movie, it has to be seen and understood from personal desires, frustrations, broken illusions and harsh reality within the dream and delusory realms. It’s not a realistic movie and it’s not linear also. Many people don’t like those kind of movies where logic is suspended in favor of symbolism and subconscious patterns.

Thank you Brian. There are several on your list I haven't seen. I'll check them out. It's hard to make a Top 10 so I applaud. I would have to say 12 Angry Men(1957) and Glengarry Glen Ross are quite compelling.
I completely agree with you on the movie 'Gravity' and Sandra Bullocks performance. 'Gravity' is one of my top favorite films from the 2010's. I wish Bullock won the Oscar for that film rather than winning the Oscar for 'The Blind Side.' I agree that her performance is fine, and the movie is....okay. I've seen it once and that's good enough.

My favourite Albert Brooks movies are The Muse, and Mother- I actually didn't get very far into Defending Your Life (likely just wasn't in the right mood). Sunset Blvd- I prefer All About Eve, which I rank alongside Billy Wilder's Some Like it Hot as a "perfect" movie.

Persona, yes. I would take The Leopard over Death in Venice. And 2001 and Vertigo would be my top 2, or at least were. I think Vertigo has been losing some of its impact for me, but still so powerful and tragic.

Mulholland Drive has my hands-down, all-time favorite title card. It's stupid brilliant.
