Online only games in general are idiotic. The only pass I give for them is if they're free to play.

I am torn. I like the look and idea of this game, but giant health pool enemies is a turn off. Blocking not using a shield…despite you using a shield…is so weird.
Also the online only requirement is a big no. Huge no. It means the game will eventually just die when the devs stop supporting the online portion.
Had this on my steam wish list a while. Think I’m going to see how it goes before buying it. Thanks for the good review!!!!

I forgot this came out today. I was super psyched after playing the demo not too long ago, but I'm glad I saw you review it. I ended up picking Dredge up based on your other video instead. Hopefully they get this polished soon-ish before I forget it exists.

@@CaduceusLB and that's cool. I get it and I'll more than likely end up buying it within the next couple weeks so I don't forget about it. I had a really good time with the demo. I don't expect such a small team to fix and balance everything right away.

Like dude, they have over 500 people working in their studio at Avalanche alone. Thats ignoring the fact they have a few more studios on top.
This is no "oh small 3 guys and no funding team"-situation. Its not even a "20 people and kickstarter as a backup"-situation.
Its a "THQ and EA cooperated to release AAA game"-situation.

@@argentum746 This is not Avalanche main studio though. Systemic Reaction is a substudio with much more limited resources than Avalanche's AAA efforts.

Thanks for the review. The online requirements seem to be popping up lately. This was a major issue years ago (Diablo III and Sim City 5) so I'm curious if a AAA release will force this conversation upon us again.
It was one of the more popular games on the steamfest couple months ago , sad to see it still so rough.
I really like ACG's review scale. So simple, yet so clear. Needs to be an industry standard.
I actually think he makes a case for another level on the scale here, "wait for updates"

Loved that game still never beat it 100% though because certain things won't spawn in.

When it comes to open world roguelikes, the one I think is going to successful is Hyper Light Breaker. Not only does that gameplay look way better than this, but it also has co-op and a way better art style in my opinion. This game looked interesting to me until I found a game that is doing a lot of the same things but seems to be doing them better. Hope Ravenbound eventually comes together though!
i recommend this game to my cousin since we're taking a break from Valheim lol
P.S hope they add co-op since the devs made previous titles like Generation Zero w/ co-op that made the game thrice the fun.
edit: saw on steam that it was singeplayer in mind, but had plans for social aspects.

Absolutely waited for review on this one - it looks really great to me, but the combat didn't feel too hot.
Same. Combat looked very slow and tedious, especially for fighting trash monsters.
Looks pretty and I like the look of the combat in spite of the spongy enemies. If Valheim controlled like this, I would probably like that game more than I do. Maybe this is a good alternative for a non AC Viking game.

I buy games when available. If its not due to missing price I then buy it when it's available. As shown every time and explained hundreds of times.
I tried the demo out and like the whole idea of the game, but combat and controls were a bit janky. Waiting to see what the price will be, but could be an interesting game if the devs give it a bit more polish overtime.
First thought was, ooh, looks good. Then the devs shoved the "cards" into the game, totally ruining immersion and making it clear this just a game. I am so tired of this trope, and how it always ruins immersion totally. So, that's an automatic no from me. Great review as usual though.

Ok I did not know about needing to be online to play the game, honestly I wasn't sure if I want to play this game when they mention perma death character because I will definitely fond over the character I will choose when playing. But since you need online to play it then this just give me answer to not play it

Thanks for squaking about this game. Was very interested until i saw the online only. That really murdered it for me. I bet more people would flock to it if it was offline. Im done cawing now. Time to have a nice flight of beer.

Dang I was lookin forward to this. An open world rogue-lite with a more mature/Viking-esque aesthetic and combat that looks something akin to Souls. In between this and Bleakfaith, kinda disappointed. Then again, Bleakfaith has been updating/fixing their game practically every day so I'll be excited to revisit that when the time is right.
I don’t get how it looks to be so free, especially in movement, to then be bogged down with enemies that don’t even seem tanky, it’s just you hit like a wet noodle up against a cinder block

I saw that it was coming out soon, so I watched some gameplay and the combat looked rough...
This is a game I'd probably buy in a few years if it's on sale but that online-only thing has me hesitant even doing that.

I wonder why devs never understand this making enemies spongy in a game like this is or certain shooters is never fun for the player instead make them squishier and have good feed back when hitting them if you need to extend combat have more enemies spawn in is one idea! If your combat loop is fun players won’t mind the extra enemies spawning in. There’s plenty of other ways to make it less grating.
I played the demo a while back and there were performance issues. The skills were lacking and I can not recall exactly what i didn't like about the card system with rogue like elements.

Until I heard "Systemic Reaction", I though this was about Ravenwatch, and was infinitely disappointed.
The concept of rogulite soulslike absolutely doesn't entice. always online is just an extra downside

Always online is an instant nope. Roguelites are often my "break in case of emergency" games. When internet goes out or I'm out and about on the Steam Deck, that's when I put most of my time on roguelites. Can't have an always online one, no thanks.

Online single player is a hard pass.
Especially in a small game from a publisher that could just pull the plug any second citing poor sales and server costs.

Also, online only in a single player game is never a good sign.
I was quite disappointed by the game - not only bc of always online, but because of the overall "Early access" feel, the bosses especially felt quite lazy. Constant crashes didn't help.
