  • Shooting in black and white has changed the way I see street photography. In this video you will learn just how shooting in black-and-white can transform your street photography. You will learn how to create timeless street shots and you'll see how composition and contrast are affected in a whole new way when shooting in black and white. Storytelling is still fundamental, but the rules of reading a photo are altered when using a black-and-white JPEG or editing in Adobe Lightroom. Finally, you will learn that it is easy to create a street photography project when shooting in black-and-white.
    Enjoy!

I started carrying a point and shoot camera set for BW/monochrome at outdoor car and track shows. Many black vehicles with lots of chrome look so much better. Other times I may set my DSLR to monochrome like for birch bark trees etc. or convert with my computer.

Some objects look better in monochrome. That’s awesome 👍

Loved this, particularly the colour / mono comparisons, they really make your points. I prefer landscapes and I'm trying to do more intentionally mono shots so I found this inspirational. I might even try some street / urban landscapes. Thanks again.

Shoot Ricoh GR3 in high BW or Fuji XT-5 in Acros R but nothing beats the Leica M11 monochrom with summilux 35 f1.4.

You talk about mood and emotion.
It is important to be aware of our own moods.
I really appreciate this video and I need to watch it again in approximately one month.
For now I just am not in a Black and White mood. It is spring and the colors are bright.
I want to set my digital camera to Kodachrome settings. I want the grass and the tulips and the daffodils.
Again, thanks….there is much to consider in your video.

Thanks, Joe, for this great lecture in b&w street photography. I learned a lot of new things from you. I shoot with Fuji cameras. Love the integrated acros monochrome mode and I’m going to try this & that the next days. 🙋🏼‍♂️ from Hannover, Germany

Your video was very entertaining, many thanks for that. As an oldie I was brought up on the artistry of Ansel Adams and Fan Ho who both must be the benchmark for B&W images.

Good video, I would like to see 35mm film photos if you are emulating film in your video. I think putting a LUT over your digital video is cheating out the film shooters a little. None the less, great snaps and good points made. Don’t have to listen to my opinion but I felt I would like to share it. Hope that’s ok! J

Good one, Joe. Well, as usual. Regarding photography, I come from the BW film, and the GR1V, developing in an improvised lab on a bathroom, so i always see and compose in BW, when photographing. Having the ability to also have the same shot in color, is the big advantage in digital photography, for me.
    Accept my regards, from Porto.

Thank you for this profound lesson. As I have been taking photos since almost seven decades, there is widespread experience in monochrome (panchromatic), color negative, and color slides as well. It's only in the last ten years that I've got used to releasing color negative film in both mono & chromo, and the same with digital imaging. That way I can decide for each picture whether I like it better in mono or color - just as you have shown here. I currently came across this problem when compiling about 500 London 1976 Fujichrome RD100 slides, where I alternatively omit the color and then compare the effect; sometimes color pleases me more, sometimes monochrome - it's a pretty game and expands your expression possibilities. @philosimot
