    Honestly, this channel is so underrated! The way Andre prepares the topics, his pleasantly normal, honest and open manner is a huge treasure trove for every photo beginner and advanced photographer alike. The fact that such valuable content is offered for free only makes it better. In short: Thank you Andre for this great channel. 💫🙌

    Dude amazing video!! Definitely needed to watch this! Having presets is very helpful. I look at them as a good starting point. I have a certain way I want to edit a photo I’ve taken, I use a preset to start the editing process and then adjust from there. Rarely do I slap on a preset and not have to make any adjustments. So shout out to all the photographers who make presets!

    7:59 got me right between the eyes man. Now I am crying... crying for all the wasted time and effort looking at what other do and 'thinking' of how I can apply it, instead of just doing my thing....
    I am not a writer, but hope the jist of it comes through....
    I get it.. Maybe I am not good enough AND It's ok.

    Thank you for the interesting video. I think you're right: new equipment doesn't make my photography better. But it can make it easier: good eye AF makes portrait photography easier, good trackick AF makes sports photography easier, etc.

    The last one hit the hardest. But definitely a lot of these were needed to be heard. The 5th one was my favorite just because it reminded me of my “why” for many things besides photography. Creating for the sake of creating to enjoy it for myself. And not for others approval. If others like it, great. But if I like it, that’s what matters the most.

    Well said and true! Years ago I recovered from GAS and now take more pictures. I also found that I can take great pictures with my DSLRs than jumping to a new system that is costly. My goal is to please myself first with my work.

    Regarding being not good enough: it doesn't necessarily mean that your photography isn't good enough but maybe your business/marketing skills aren't good enough or you're trying to play a niche that is just not suitable to be the base of a business (maybe your local market is over saturated or the market is too small or your sujet is just not commercially attractive). Being a successful pro photographer is A LOT MORE than just taking at least half decent pictures. Running a business is hard.

    Yes... good content and well presented. The 'gear' thing is the only bit that i'm skeptical about - in part because of the incessant 'gear doesn't matter', from one camp, and the whole unregulated craving for shiny objects from the other. But the truth isn't B&W. Does gear make anyone a 'better photographer?' I honestly have no idea what that proposition is even meant to mean. What i do know is that the right tools for the task will generally yield either a more satisfying process or a superior outcome - and often both. I mainly shoot environmental and industrial. 100%, gear matters - low light, crashing waves, wind and driving rain and sand. The genres where i think it may matter even more are wildlife and astro - most of the aforementioned plus things that are small and move really fast. So in these genres if you don't have the appropriate gear, you're not going to be better or worse as a photographer... you're just going to end up the owner of a heap of broken stuff. I guess the point is that 'gear enables'. What anyone does with that gear is another issue altogether, but 'gear doesn't matter' or 'gear won't make you a better photographer' (it sure can make you a different photographer with opportunities you've not had before) tries to sweep up way too much in an easily digestible bite of dogmatism. And we all know this, because we've all had the experience of a new bit of kit that's been right for realising an image that we'd previously never quite managed to get. All the best - Lkd&Subd.

  • @CharlesFBI
    @CharlesFBI 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Excellent points! Some of them hurt :P But then again, I've learned to accept some facts instead of living with the idea of what I "should" think or do. I enjoy many things of photography, and a lot of it is the gear. I love how a good classic DSLR feels in my hands, also how it sounds when I take a picture. These have little to no effect on what my pictures look like, except for the fact that I'm more likely to pick them up and use them. I don't work as a photographer so this gives me more freedom to think about this part of it, but if I did, I probably wouldn't even have to think about it :). But I don't have to justify it anymore, I just use the gear because I like it, full stop.
    Especially the part of new gear hit home. It used to bother me more, since I felt that I had to make optimal decisions with all my gear to maximize some imaginary benefit. I've come to the conclusion that I'm a bit more of a gear enthusiast than a photographer, and I'm ok with that now. I like both, but don't want to bash myself for liking gear anymore.

    A lot of good points. I am struggling with four, „maybe you are not good enough“. Should be extended by „to sell your stuff“ You cAn be an amazing photographer, but if you are not able to raise attention for your work, no one cares. Thinking about Vivian Maier who was at least a very capable photographer but never sold a print, never had an exhibition. There are tens of thousands Vivian Maiers out there. It’s not only about taking good pictures, it’s also about touching other people with your work.

    Just a teeny/tiny cavyat about truth 1. Even though I'm using a very good DSLR camera, due to my vision problems I sometimes have problems with manual focusing. Sometimes my shots come out slightly out of focus or motor out of focus due to the fact that I have problems focusing more because the maximum ISO in my camera is 3200. So I also get sometimes problems with noise. Are you telling me that a mirrorless Canon R5 that focuses on the point I touch on its view screen (instead of one of 9 points), and works as noiselessly in ISO of tens of thousands as my current camera in ISO 400 really won't impact positively the quality of images I produce? The results I get from the workshop make me feel I rather differ in the opinion on this.

    Nice thoughts, I to run into too many who are just interested in equipment, although that can be fun also at times.
    My biggest problems are getting older and archiving my images. As equipment gets older firmware isn’t updated and losses can occur.
    I’m looking for a fool proof way to archive my images, be able to find them and keep the edits that I’ve done. 🖖

    One thing i slightly disagree: yes gear won't make you good if your pics are boring. BUT if your specific niche and style require you to get that prime 1.4 and FF body so you can take usable raws, than the gear matters. Without it you can't really express your specific vision. My daily cam is zv-e10 with 7artisans 18mm f6.3 mk.II but as soon as im at the nightlife event i need that high iso performance with lowlight capability, fast framerate and great AF (flash just dont produce the results i want to get). But sure. If i was unable to use that setup i would certainly find the way to get around it because im photographer and i know that there is not just one way to deliver quality product. Good points anyway.

    At around 6:00 you say film emulation is just glorified presets and do not look like actual film, and therefore will not improve your photography on their own. Maybe it's just me but it kind of sounds like you're implying that film has the power to improve your photography on it's own merit which I don't think is true either. At the end of the day film is also just another look, you still need to have all the fundamentals correct to get a good shot. No matter what you use to capture the image, you still need photographic skill to execute it.

Obrigado meu amigo. Continue postando conteúdo relevante.

    About GAS in my case is all about "the photographic experience". I perfectly know my photos will not improve using new gear but i enjoy using new smaller lenses or new focal lengths. Knowing this, i spend moderate amount of money in GAS. But I know some people is wrong thinking new expensive gear will rise his photography to new levels. Leica fanboys, for example, they spend vicious amount of money or sell all his gear to buy a crazy expensive Leica camera that turns them in Ansel Adams. In fact they try to sell the idea that their photos are much better since they bought Leica. Don´t get my wrong, I respect people who buy Leica for the rangefinder experience, but it is a very sad mistake buy Leica hoping its magical properties make you a better photographer and there are a lot of Leica fanboys trying to convince other people to buy "magic" Leica cameras.

    "Ascribe meaning to the art that is unfair to the art itself." The art is just some inanimate thing, so you can't be fair or unfair to it. So digging deeper, what are you really saying here?

  • @ditruter
    @ditruter 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Andre, I think you are wrong about presets. I don´t use presets because i shoot RAW and edit all my pictures. But there is huge amount of people who shot and upload the photo directly to Instagram or Facebook. They already know their photos will not be amazing using presets but they want a "one button" little improve to their photos. I think 99% of people use presets on that way.

    • @stephenmartland-buck9590
      @stephenmartland-buck9590 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would counter by saying: just because 90% of people are doing it, doesn't mean you should. Taking time before and or after taking a photo really does create the image and your vision.
      Presets are amazing, don't get me wrong! But as photographers we shouldn't encourage making average photos better quickly just cause we can. But it's so satisfying to find the feel of a shoot or series organically.
      Anyway, whatever works for you friend! I'm not trying to argue. Peace.

    • @ditruter

      @@stephenmartland-buck9590 I think most of preset users are not photographers but ordinary people trying to get the best photo without too much effort. I agree with you that a photographer shoudn't use presets

      remember, just because you do it one way, doesn’t mean everyone should. i’ve been editing my raw photos for 15 years, but at this point in my journey am finding the in-camera jpegs allowing me to flex different creative muscles. essentially pushing me to get my exposure and composition the way i want it in-camera.
